Hmmmm, I was really over the fence about giving it a thumbs up or down, but then the last stretch of the game cemented the thumbs down for me. Overall, Nairi is a game that is not terrible, but it'so so lackluster. A cross between a visual novel and a point-and-click adventure games, it has all the elements that makes a point-and-click game bad (tedious and unclear navigation, pixel hunting, slow dialogue) and none of what makes it good (charming animations, creative puzzles, witty lines). It's artstyle is not bad, but it's so static that it never rises beyond mediocre. It tries to pack a lot of lore, but the pacing is so off that you just don't care about the characters, and you can barely follow the plot. The puzzles are laughably easy for 90% of the game, and then in the last stretch, go completely off the difficulty rails and become arcane and obscure to solve. I guess Nairi is a game that was made by clearly passionate people, but that lacked enough playtesting and polish on its systems. You can feel the passion and the drive from the creators, but they just missed the mark and made a game that is, at the best times, boring, and at the worst times, grating. The difficulty spike and the sudden ending (which killed the pacing) are the factors that ultimately made it from a weak recommendation to a soft "avoid-it" instead. Also, what is the deal with the furries? I didn't detract points because of that, but man, that stuff is so weird and unnecessary on the grand scheme of things. You have limited time in your life and there are many games that do everything that Nairi does, but much better. Go play one of them instead.
legalzinho...
NAIRI: TOWER OF SHIRIN
Rating: 5/10 Genre: Visual Novel / Puzzle Length: 3 - 5 Hours Achievement Difficulty: 1/10 What is it? A visual novel with light puzzle solving and area navigation. You play as Nairi, a child who has had to escape her (unwillingly) high class lifestyle after the kidnap of her parents. You play as her on her quest to discover why her parents were kidnapped while uncovering the mystery of both the eponymous Tower Of Shirin and the Great Storm that sunk the previous civilisation of Noora. PROS

Cute art style
Interesting story with likeable characters
Very easy achievements
CONS

Insane difficulty ramp at the end of the game
Dialogue a bit too slow moving
Most of the game puzzles are typical fetch quests
Personal Thoughts The story itself is pretty interesting but it's a game obviously designed for a younger audience. The dialogue is very light and there is abundant humour; only a couple of sections does it show a dark undertone. The puzzle solving went from ridiculously easy (fetch this, give to this guy and repeat) for 90% of the game to deciphering ciphers, rotating rooms and identifying and translating symbols, to the point that I don't think a younger audience would be able to complete. There are two more games that appear to be much longer. While I had a reasonable time with this one I don't think the story was interesting enough to warrant buying the other games. If you're interested, i'd buy this game on sale to see if it's your kind of thing. It's very short while also being almost entirely a visual novel.
It is an ok-ish puzzle / point and click / visual novel kind of game. The artstyle is lovely but the animations generally feel a bit too slow and the ending is very abrupt (I assume the story continues in the 2nd game, however I haven't played that one to confirm). It works without any issues on Linux with Proton (9.0-4).
Very cute point and click adventure game set in a whimsical desert city. Definitely more tailored to younger audiences but enjoyable nevertheless, and an easy 100% for achievements. The game's biggest strengths are its "chibi" hand-drawn artstyle and adorable characters, as well as a pleasant and thematic soundtrack and a decently written story. It is, however, quite short and forms only the first chapter of an episodic set of games. It is also quite dialogue-heavy, and the puzzle/exploration sections suffer from slightly clunky navigation with a lot of doubling back and unclear entry/exit zones. Apart from these drawbacks, a very sweet little adventure.
It pains me to give it this review because I really liked the presentation and art direction of the game, and it was made with love. Each screen looks great and the character designs are charming, but there were several issues that made me not enjoy the game as much. In terms of gameplay, it was a fine point and click adventure, even with some nice puzzling dungeons, but it suffered from a lot of backtracking due to having so many small screens to go through. It was a bit confusing to figure out where to go sometimes, screen transitions weren't fully clear and I would semi-often leave from where I entered(though some indications existed). Something I dislike with burning passion is having to click everywhere in a screen, thankfully we had a cursor to show what could be interacted. However the coins had only guesswork and that sucked, back then in Professor Layton I already hated that. I did read that they changed it for the second game so that's good. The dialogues and plot beats felt a bit... mundane? But also weirdly contrived? I honestly don't know how to explain it, I was feeling annoyed during some dialogues and sequences(somehow it made me apathetic to the cliffhanger ending). Maybe a reason could be the lack of character evolution, the main character would benefit from that. I felt more invested in Rex's past gang troubles but it was too quickly sidelined. I found it a nice touch and clever that you could glean info from listening to rumors of actual people chatting on the streets. The backtracking and strange feeling of the story was too distracting from the great art and fun dungeons. I wish it wasn't so, maybe I'll end up playing the sequel at some point.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this cute indie game but my expectations were blown! definitely saw the Ghibli inspiration in every aspect Loved the art style and the simple point & click puzzle gameplay <3 Made me wanna play the sequel now!
🎮 Reseña de NAIRI: Tower of Shirin
