The Walking Evil is a deliberately old-school survival horror experience that wears its influences proudly, aiming to resurrect the tension, pacing, and atmosphere of late-1990s genre classics. Developed and published by VikTor, the game places players in the role of Detective Daniel Robinson, whose investigation into a string of gruesome murders gradually spirals into a confrontation with forces far beyond rational explanation. From its opening moments, the game establishes a somber, uneasy tone, emphasizing isolation, limited information, and the creeping realization that the case at hand is not simply criminal, but profoundly unnatural. Exploration forms the backbone of the experience, with environments designed to feel claustrophobic and hostile. The use of fixed camera angles is a defining feature, often framing rooms in ways that restrict visibility and heighten suspense. Corners obscure threats, doorways feel ominous, and even familiar spaces become uncomfortable when viewed from rigid, cinematic perspectives. For players less accustomed to this style, the option to switch to a more traditional third-person view offers some flexibility, but the fixed angles remain central to how the game builds tension and unease. Movement through these environments is slow and deliberate, reinforcing the sense that every step forward could carry consequences. The game’s narrative unfolds gradually through environmental details, scattered notes, and occasional cutscenes, encouraging players to piece together the mystery rather than having it explained outright. Detective Robinson’s role as an investigator grounds the early portions of the story, lending a sense of realism before the horror elements fully take over. As the plot progresses, familiar survival horror themes emerge, blending psychological dread with grotesque discoveries. Multiple endings add a layer of replayability, subtly encouraging thorough exploration and careful decision-making, though the narrative itself remains rooted in genre conventions rather than attempting radical subversion. Combat and resource management follow classic survival horror principles, prioritizing restraint over empowerment. Ammunition and healing items are scarce, forcing players to decide whether confrontation is worth the risk or if avoidance is the smarter option. Both melee and ranged weapons are available, but encounters can feel tense not because of mechanical finesse, but because of vulnerability and limited options. Controls and combat responsiveness reflect the game’s indie scope, sometimes feeling stiff or imprecise, which can lead to frustration during intense encounters. At the same time, this roughness inadvertently reinforces the feeling of helplessness, making even minor enemies feel threatening. Puzzle solving is interwoven throughout the environments, often requiring players to examine their surroundings closely, collect items, and interpret subtle clues. These puzzles echo the logic-driven challenges of classic survival horror titles, focusing on observation and inventory management rather than abstract riddles. While not always elegant in execution, they serve to slow the pace and reinforce immersion, encouraging players to linger in unsettling spaces longer than they might like. Progress often feels earned through patience rather than clever shortcuts. Atmosphere is where The Walking Evil is most effective. Lighting, sound design, and environmental layout work together to maintain a constant sense of dread. Ambient noises, distant footsteps, and sudden audio cues keep players on edge, especially when paired with limited visibility. While character models and animations are modest, the overall presentation succeeds in creating tension through mood rather than spectacle. Playing with headphones significantly enhances the experience, as audio cues often provide the first warning of nearby danger. Technically, the game shows clear signs of its indie origins. Animations can be awkward, movement occasionally unresponsive, and some sections feel less polished than others. These shortcomings can disrupt immersion for players expecting modern smoothness, but they are balanced by the developer’s clear commitment to delivering a complete and coherent horror experience. The ambition to combine detective storytelling, classic survival mechanics, and atmospheric horror is evident throughout, even when execution falls short of the ideal. Ultimately, The Walking Evil is a game best appreciated by fans of traditional survival horror who value atmosphere, tension, and deliberate pacing over refined mechanics and cinematic polish. It does not reinvent the genre, nor does it hide its inspirations, but it succeeds in capturing the uneasy charm of older horror titles where fear came from uncertainty and limitation rather than spectacle. For players willing to accept its rough edges and embrace its retro design philosophy, it offers a grim, methodical journey into darkness that feels earnest, unsettling, and occasionally rewarding in its own understated way. Rating: 5/10
Found it to be unplayable also no controller support either. Couldn't even get past the language page.
