Well, now! This review has been a long time coming! We have to go back to May 31, 2013, when I bought this game. It was probably on GamersGate because I activated it with a key. I played it for a bit, but I remember getting stuck. The game probably slipped my mind and I didn't finish it. I have screenshots from almost three years later, in early 2017, when it appears I tried again. That didn't last long, I think I only played one session! Here we are in June 2025, and I've finally completed The Swapper. A couple of factors converged, reminding me to play this classic game. The unexpected maintenance update in May brought it to my attention again. Then shortly after, I played The Midnight Walk. The art style, based on clay and real materials, forced me to recall The Swapper. I had to go back to finish it! The game is excellent and still holds up a dozen years after I first played it. Yes, there were still some stiff challenges, but I tried to get creative and push the swapping mechanics to their limits... that actually worked for some of the trickiest puzzles! I was able to complete the game without looking up any solutions. I wouldn't have recognized the references to real world philosophers of Consciousness during the two previous times I played The Swapper. I knew Dennett, of course, but I wasn't aware of this aspect of him at the time. I only learned of Chalmers about five years ago. The game ending felt abrupt. I felt like the story had further to go, though I can see how the swapping mechanics had probably produced as many interesting puzzles as they could. This theme of consciousness manipulation creates an eerie atmosphere, one which SOMA (2015) has since taken and run with. The Swapper has what I want in an indie puzzle game - a cool puzzle mechanic, a creative visual style, and a brief runtime. The creepy, mysterious narrative that breaks up the puzzle rooms is a huge bonus. I love this game.

My favorite part was when The Swapper said "It's swappin' time" and swapped all over those guys.
Ive been playing games for over 30 years, there have only been a handful of experiences that were truly remarkable and memorable. This is one of them. I started around 8pm, and finished past midnight. Turn off the lights, put the kids and wife to bed, crank the volume, remove your distractions and fall into this game and you won't be disappointed.
Wait, what? This game is 10 years old?? And nobody knows about it??? This game deserves more attention.
This game reminds me of Inside and Limbo.
Sinopsis

I don't even remember when I bought this, it was part of a humble bundle or something probably. I have no idea why I didn't play it but now that they've updated it for Steam Deck I thought I'd check it out. It hasn't aged a day, it may even feel a bit better than when I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about with it for a bit way back when. Absolute aesthetic/art style TRIUMPH stapled to an excellent puzzle-platformer with a real sci-fi story. We didn't know how good we had it lads! The only complaint I have is that they do a bunch of no-clip secrets that have a lot of extra info about the story that I wish they would have just left in the game. If you haven't played through this yet, have a good pair of noise cancelling headphones and 3-4 hours free this is a terrific way to spend the time!
