the best ace attorney entry in the whole series and its NOT even close. what a game. (maybe if i write a good review for tgaa theyll make aa7 release a day sooner)
Totally worth playing if you like the Ace Attorney games, its also a nice start for people who are new to the series because both games are set in a different era. The game includes both The Great Ace Attorney games, previously released on the 3DS in japan only, they did port them to more systems later and translated them, just like the Miles Edgeworth game. The main gameplay difference with the older titles is you do a deduction phase with Sholmes, while in the other games you used some forensic tools. The story is pretty good but a bit slow, you need to play both games to get the whole story. Plays wonderfully on the steam deck. Worth grabbing for fans of visual novels and the Ace Attorney series, or even if you just want a chill game to read mostly with light logic puzzles using evidence to solve them.
I need to say this right from the get-go: I left this game after Case 2-2 and below there are some spoilers, so read at your discretion. The game has a number of good qualities and can reasonably be called profound, considering the sheer number of humorous moments, clever little tricks, gameplay mechanics which apparently improve on the previous instalments. The main character is such a dumbass (in the good silly sense), he just can't be taken without a smile. Objections (when done correctly) feel great and the music is simply godly, whoever created this masterpiece is a hero in their own right. From the court trial perspective, it's interesting how they leant heavily into evidence which you can smartly observe in your hands, it fells fresh and cool. The first game's ending (the ending, not the case itself) felt incredible, such true cinema. The same with the concepts like "Dance of Deduction" or Case 2-1 where you don't play as the MC. The cultural things are very welcome, like the great and oh-so-anxious Soseki-san. However, all these good qualities get slowly but surely buried under the insurmountable pile of crap the game shoves into you day and night. 1. Some lines are clearly mistranslated. In case 1-1 "There is poison in that bottle" leads you to say "She put poison in his glass of water", which are completely different (bottle vs glass). It's a guessing game at these moments. The phrase "sandwiched between the victim's steak" is factually wrong as the dude only ordered water and was not allowed to eat steak after tooth extraction. So in fact, no "victim's steak" existed. 2. The endings in the cases rob you of satisfaction. You successfully dismantle everything and bring truth to light, only to... everyone escape unscathed. Case 1-1 is notorious for this: the murderer leaves free, the thief leaves free, the cop who stole evidence from the crime scene and hid witnesses leaves free, the judge allowing it to happen leaves free. It leaves you with a very valid question: why exactly did I spend multiple hours of my life here? When in case 1-4 the culrpit's punishment was to... go home and take a vacation I just died from cringe inside. 3. The game does not care one bit about your creativity or logic. If the devs did not intend it, you will be penalised and the game does not care. Victim died immediately and you point at the written message in a foreign language? Wrong, perfectly normal. Victim fell while clenching a fist? Yep, that's the inconsistency that we as devs intended (and then in Case 2-1 another victim dies with a clenched fist and it's somehow allowed). Prove a victim had no gun - "present a photo where victim has no gun" - the game penalises you for being an idiot since you submitted a correct evidence, just not the one they wanted you to present. My favourite part is when only one witness has given testimony, you are asked to point out who is the relevant witness that testified in the court, you point to that ONE AND ONLY witness and... get penalised because you have a working brain in your head - "Ha-ha, that witness was... the defendant all along!" Finally, when asked about "what tells us about the defendant's tea?" I though I was foolproof and showed the teacups... Who knew it was, in fact, a bar of soap that pointed to defendant's tea more than the freaking cup it resided in! 4. Van Zieks is... an enigma. Dude is a legendary prosecutor - turns out to be a drunkard (14 wine glasses in one trial? I'd die if it was water) and a racist. And more importantly - he doesn't do his job at all, gets bested multiple times in a row by a foreign student who never studied English law and his best argument is "We didn't find anyone else and missed half the evidence, who else could have been the culprit?" 5. The game is illegally long and it does everything to make you stay and keep reading. I can't count how many "... ... ..." I had to read while each dot is being typed one at a time. The investigation in case 1-5 is so tedious, dependent on you clicking things in specific order multiple times with random people present and still creating a puzzle on how to progress (similarly to case 2-2) is just depressing. Overall - a game designed solely to get on your nerves and then introduce some of the funniest jokes and the most wholesome moments in the entire genre. It could be better without the "guess what devs intended" and if cut by about 65%. But as it is now - it's outright bad.

One of the best and most memorable games I have every played. The story starts off slow, and from case to case it certainly has its ups and downs, but stick with it. The final act blew my mind and gave me goosebumps. The set up, choreography of the sequence of events, the music, and the build up of the characters resolve (pun intended). It is worth the time, highly recommend.
For those that are into the genre, I believe it is the absolute peak of Ace Attorney. Interesting new mechanics, incredible soundtrack, and some of the best plot twists in the entire series. I would recommend anyone that have any interest in playing this gem to go as blindly as possible.

I love the Ace Attorney games, but this one has failed to grab me every time I try it. You might like it, but be warned that it is quite different from other entries in the series. I personally found the game to be derivative and lacking in substance compared to the other games. The setting and characters being completely disconnected from the previous entries left me feeling adrift. The inclusion of a Sherlock Holmes type character was a selling point for me, but I found the execution lacking. Will not bother to finish, but I don't regret buying the bundle that gave me this steam key. Ace Attorney is still a GOATed series, just keep in mind that this is its own thing and you might not enjoy it as much. It might also end up being your favorite, so don't take my review as gospel. The quality is there with graphics, art style, music, overall presentation. Capcom didn't mess up badly enough for me to call this a straight up bad game.

A fun, clever, and heartfelt game. The music will push your hype levels through the roof. Works great on Proton.
