About
The story begins as a "simple" journey through time following our two heroes Joe and Eva. They want to enter Source City where the life is good and there is no more suffering. As part of their trial to be allowed the entry to Source City, our heroes will visit multiple destinations in the history of their alternate Earth. However, as the story progresses you will learn that there is much more to the story than just time travel.
Visit multiple locations each with their own unique characters and stories. Experience action, love, tragedy, mystery, and much more. Find out the mysteries of this alternate Earth and discover what reality is.
Keep in mind that this visual novel is just a visual novel. There are no choices to make or minigames to play.
I think the story is pretty cool but only if you like this type of game/novel. But of course I think that. I made it.

In The Source you will embark on a trial that takes you back in time to ensure your place in a future utopia.
The Story
The year is 2750 and each year chosen members of Earth’s Society begin a trial to enter Source City. You follow one pair, Joe & Eva as they traverse the trial and their relationship. It reminds me of the story behind The Hunger Games. The promise of Source City being a utopia where no war or strife exists and everyone lives in harmony. The trial itself involves time travel. You travel to different destinations in pairs. The destinations are all set in different times in Earth’s history before the fall of civilization. In the first half of the novel you meet various people and encounter various events that set up the flip side of the story in the second half. Meeting characters in the first part and seeing the alternate side of the story in the second half. The second half really picks up speed and I found moves much too fast with the conclusion of the novel coming to a fast paced ending.
Visuals, Audio & Features
This is a visual novel and not a game as stated by the developers in their write up on the game’s page but a kinetic visual novel (you make no choices in the game, it is simply to be experienced). It is fully voiced in English with well done voice acting and is a fully written story with original character art. A visual experience set to a haunting and beautiful soundtrack. There are some game elements common to other visual novels that are more game-like such as save slots, text skipping, text speed, audio controls and display options. Visually the backgrounds don’t really mesh with the character art. The characters are hand drawn and have a style all their own, refreshing in the age of AI everything. But the backgrounds are polished and look like the style found in anime with clean lines, bright colors and cell shading. Also the backgrounds are always blurred out forcing the character art to “pop”out. I find this to be jarring honestly. The background looks great but you never really get to appreciate them blurred out.
Overall Experience
The story overall was very much like Hunger Games. The same story with a surprising ending that I won’t spoil here. It was an interesting read but I am neutral on this review. The story starts off slow and then picks up pace and rushes through the second part, while true it takes an interesting flip to showcase the other side’s perspective, it is too rushed. And the end to me was disappointing. No real sense of closure on what it all meant. I do not dislike this game because it has its moments and the voice acting and music are very well done. The character art can be a bit rough but I enjoyed that it is hand-drawn. I just wish the backgrounds could be appreciated and not always blurred out for the entirety of the game. Some may love the abrupt ending that leaves you with questions or some, like me, want a fleshed out ending to connect it all together. The people like me who want the latter half may feel disappointed in this game's ending. It feels wrong for me to not recommend this game due to its many high points and parts of the story and build up that I was enjoying just because the end, for me, was unsatisfying. So I will recommend it with a caveat that now, after reading my review, you know what to expect and what not to expect. 🌸 Otome Lovers wishes to thank Octopuses for providing a free review copy for this game.
Overview
The Source is a graphic tale containing full audio support for all story text. The player reads on as an outsider following the unfolding events of a couple of story characters, with no agency to alter the narrative. In summary, the epitome of the genre description “visual novel.”
Story
The post-apocalyptic world is a crumby place to survive. Life is hard. But there is hope for a select few each year thanks to a solitary paradise on earth known, somewhat strangely, as “Source City”. Annually, a few pairs of individuals are selected to partake in a trial together which involves travelling back in time to visit moments in history. They have free will over whether to get involved or simply act as bystanding witnesses. At the end of their travels, they are expected to report on what they have seen, and thus a decision will be reached as to whether they have passed or failed their trial; with success leading to their admission to Source City and a life they could only have previously dreamed of. The story has a 50/50 split, with our first pairing of Joe and Eva experiencing one side/viewpoint of a scene from this alternative earth's history, and then moving on to a further 6 events before being returned for their evaluation; then we experience the adventures of Tom and Mei, a second pair, as they are sent to see the other side of each of the same moments in time that their counterparts previously encountered.
Presentation
Every character is fully voiced, even the narrator; and the huge majority of these are very good, bringing a greater sense of personality to each of the characters involved. I did feel that a couple of them sounded like they were merely reading a script, the “Gatekeeper” in particular felt emotionless and spoke so slowly that I'd read his captions before he'd vocalised more than a couple of words. If you remember Milo from the film Jumanji: The Next Level – yeah, like that! The graphic decisions in the game are interesting. Sprites are of the semi-realistic style and I really liked them, Joe's mother with her rollers in right at the start delighted me, I have never seen a VN character like that before. Kudos to the artist for the depiction. Backdrops are all, exclusively, shown in soft focus to enable the sprites to stand out. I think that this is a good idea when the palette for both lead and support graphics is the same as it prevents colour merging between them – but, many of these backdrops appear to have some good detail in them and we are denied the chance to enjoy them fully in their own right. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3170443011 The absence of a gallery – even with just the game's backgrounds presented in sharp focus – is a poor omission, and one which ought to be comparatively simple to implement. I didn't give a huge amount of attention to the supporting music as the voicing took precedence (which tends to happen when it is present in full), but what I did notice sounded pretty good and in line with events taking place.
Experience
Considering that there are no player decisions to make in-game, the user interface implementation, menus and features present are easily enough to ensure life is comfortable for most readers. They include multiple save slots and a backstep option. Weighed against what is necessary for this type of storybook, it earns almost full marks in this respect. The font used for the text is unusual and attractive to the eye, but I could imagine it being challenging to read for the visually impaired. This is the only appearance negative I could find. The addition of font options would be helpful for some. There are oddities along the way. I found the non-naming convention used throughout for the historical characters to be incomprehensible for much of my journey through the game. For example, in the opening scene visited by our first lead pair, they meet two people called “Spotter” and “Sniper”, which are their role descriptions but also the names they go by, even to each other. This pair are supposedly in love but don't call each other by their names? What?! Further on, we'll meet a child simply called “Kid” (so if she's from a class at the school where we meet her, presumably all of her classmates are called “Kid” too? I bet that's a riot at registration!) I did notice that this girl is referred to as “him” subsequently, although that is the one and only typo I noticed in the entire production, which is pretty good going. This weird approach to not naming anybody outside of the lead players and ONE mysterious person is partially addressed during the second pair's travels, and is left to the reader to infer why it is that way by the end – and again, it is possible to apply logic to it if you really want to – although I remain thoroughly unconvinced that it was the smart play to take when writing the script; it feels odd and offputting at the first time of reading; which, being a non-branching story, will be your only time. The ending to the story will probably be unexpected to most readers, and respect to the writer for coming up with something that creates the possibility of reasoned explanation for everything that has gone on before: even the seemingly arbitrary “decisions” made by some of the historical characters we get to witness (which I found laughably lacking on basis or reasoning at the time) take on a more believable aspect once everything is clarified..
Verdict
Overall I found The Source to be a bit of a mixed bag with pluses and minuses vying for domination. It was not compelling enough to have me trying to force time to have a little session every evening to see what happened next, but it did maintain enough interest to ensure that I returned to it with sufficient regularity to reach the ending whilst recollections of what had come before were still fresh in my mind. Considering that there is complete vocal support from start to finish, user friendly controls, good graphics and a story competent enough to remain engaging through to completion; my final verdict is that at the quoted full price, this story represents fair, if not exceptional, value; and is unlikely to leave fans of the genre feeling short-changed. I feel that it is the type of product you'll either like or hate, with no in-between. Therefore, if unusual science fiction stories tickle your fancy, it's worth a punt at asking price. For the work put in and the features provided, holding out for a sale would be a harsh decision upon this indie developer. Disclaimer: A copy of this game was provided by the developer. Novels within a novel. An interesting time travel story that goes through several short stories, flips the coin to see the other side all while telling an overarching story with an underlying twist. There's depth to each story that takes place in different historical time periods, both sides have compelling reasons for why they are doing things. This novel explores what is right or wrong and it's definitely worth diving into. From a gameplay point, this novel is kinetic, so there are no choices to make. The music is nice and it's fully voice acted which was pretty good too. If there is one criticism I have, it's about the art, it feels uncanny. It's not as drastic as something like Ryukishi07's art, but the feeling is there. For achievement hunters: All achievements are storyline.
I voice Joe, one of the lead roles in this game. Am I allowed to write a review? Will anybody take it seriously? LOL Hopefully you will as I'll do my best to provide an unbiased opinion. First, before anybody is thinking I didn't play the game, I've played it everyday since it came out and I completed it today. I'll start with constructive criticism and end on what I think is fantastic about the game. Would have liked to of seen a bit more polished character sprites. Their designs in general were great, however I think with the more polished and detailed backgrounds, the characters themselves stand out as a lessor quality despite their creativeness. There were numerous vocal audio parts that were cut off too early. Not so bad that it ruins the lines or anything, but it is noticeable. OK. Good stuff now. Characters have interesting, colorful and contrasting personalities. Nobody feels "stock" that isn't supposed to be. And of course, I have the biased of, that I think the voice acting is great. :P Music was fantastic. Story has great pacing, showmanship and does great at building and then peaking at the end. Especially with two stories in a way. What an incredible twist to end the game. Honestly, it's almost like a double twist. Maybe I'm just easily astonished, but it personally blew my mind.
Note: A copy of the game was gifted to me by a friend. ^^ The Source is a sci-fi, kinetic visual novel developed and published by Octopuses. After a brief introduction by Narrator, you find yourself in the roles of Joe and Eva. The world they live in is pretty bleak and harsh, but there is hope. For those who are chosen to participate in a trial and succeed, they will be allowed to enter Source City, a utopia where there is no suffering and everyone can live a good life. As for the trial itself, Gatekeeper, the person who is administering the trial, explains that Joe and Eva are to travel to different periods of Earth's history. The pair can do anything they please, so they can either interact with people from the respective time period or choose to observe. The pair's objective is to report their findings upon returning home, and from there, a judge of some sorts will determine whether they have passed. However, there is way more to this story, but in order to avoid spoilers (especially since this is a linear story), I'll stop my synopsis. XD As for the gameplay, no choices are presented, so you just play through the story from beginning to end. There are a total of 17 chapters. Even though there are no CGs, like in many visual novels, there is full English voice acting. Also, Steam achievements are present, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. I enjoy a good story where I can just relax while I'm anticipating the next series of events, and The Source ends up doing that. With that said, I'll first comment on the story. Regarding the story, it's a pretty standard post-apocalyptic, sci-fi one in which the people are living hard lives, but living in Source City will make their lives better. That's the end goal - for people to make their way into Source City and to do so by passing the trials set forth by Gatekeeper. I liked the whole time traveling aspect even though it isn't anything new. It was interesting to witness different points in an alternate Earth's history and to see firsthand how civilization collapsed and humanity was nearly wiped out. However, the story doesn't simply end there. There are some major revelations and surprises although they happen during the latter half of the story. Without going into too many spoilers, I'll just say that for the ending, I was completely mind blown, even to the point where there was a bit of fourth wall breaking. Even though the first half of the story can feel pretty standard, the other half is when things really blow out of the water. :o Next, I'll briefly go over the characters. For Joe and Eva, I found them to be pretty generic, almost to the point of having no personality. Now, I'm not saying that this is a negative, and later on, there is an explanation as to why these characters are like that. Still, I wanted to say that in case anyone was hoping for a bit of personality from them. However, I will say that around halfway through the story,
two new characters, Tom and Mei, enter the picture. They end up having way more personality, which, again, ends up being later explained
. As for the writing, I found it paced pretty well. As I mentioned earlier, the first half of the story feels pretty standard, so there are no actual surprises and so forth. However, I feel that this is intentional on the writer's part and that the second half is when things get moving. Oh, before I forget, I like how
the second half has similar events from the first half, but they take things into perspective from the other side
. I didn't notice any typos or such. With regards to gameplay, all of the achievements unlocked for me as I finished up each chapter. The only aspect that I noticed was amiss is that there were a couple of character lines which had no voice acting even though all the lines (and I do mean all the lines, so even the Narrator's ones) are supposed to be voiced. In regards to the art, I found it aesthetically pleasing. The sprites are more on the anime style although they have a bit of a realistic vibe to them. The backgrounds are drawn and colored well, too, although they appear to be blurry a lot of the time. This is probably intentional, though, since the focus is more on the characters, as the surroundings don't really matter much. I do wish that CGs had been present since I like to see what the artists come up with for important scenes and whatnot. As for the music, I enjoyed listening to the tracks. There's a bit of variety, and the tracks feel suspenseful and dramatic. Also, I like how all of the characters have English voice acting, which includes the minor characters. The voice acting makes the story feel alive and immersive, and each voice fit well with his or her respective character. Overall, would I recommend The Source? If you enjoy a good story that'll keep you guessing what'll happen next, breaks preconceived notions/ideas, and don't mind the lack of choices, then it's worth taking a look. I enjoyed the story, especially towards the end. I tend to be the kind of reader that likes to immerse myself in a story, so when certain events happen, I was, to say the least, not expecting them. For the asking price, it might be a bit pricey, as it took me around 5 hours to complete the story and obtain all of the achievements. Also, I read slowly, so it might take less time for others. However, this visual novel is fully voice acted, so that might be the reason for the asking price. Still, you can wait for a sale, and as I said, I think it's worth a try. ^^
For more detailed, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
