This game follows the very adoreable Nayc in his efforts to become the best alchemist he can be! In terms of the look of the game, it's bright and it's cheerful. The characters are all drawn in a very cute way and things pop and animate in a pleasing, satisfying way. The gameplay is essentially what you would get if you made an entire game about crafting. You wont find action stages to explore or survival scenarios to endure. It's all for the joy of crafting, so you should know if this is the kind of experience you want! If you love MMO crafting or the crafting part of any game, you will love this. Unlocking different areas to send unlockable crafters to. Watching them get better at their job and return with more resources for you to use to further your alchemy. You will have sales targets to achieve and special orders, but there's never really any pressure and you can go at your own pace. The most satisfying thing by far though is filling out pages and pages of your big collection book of everything you can craft, as well as your badges and achievements, unlocking bonuses every step out of the way. As far as pacing goes, it can be easy to get a bit too obsessed with making everything... Or get tempted to make the bear minimum and rush. The trick is in finding a balance I'd say. The game does a good job to prompt you to try different systems. For completionists though, there are quite heavy requirements to unlock some end game things and get the last few achievements, so i'd pace yourself with that too. I felt that requiring such a high amount of collecting to unlock some important end game stuff was a little much. But I still enjoyed the game enough to power through it! It's a pretty chill time generally and something I honestly struggled to put down. Thats the mark of a fantastic game, especially for the price. I say go for it!
Annoyingly addicting. I played for a few hours straight. Some people have mentioned bugs, but I personally haven't encountered any yet. A good alchemy game without a timer on specific quests. Exactly what I needed. Looking forward to more updates.
Now I'm not one for reviews or anything but this game is pretty fun to play! Translation is a bit iffy sometimes but not enough to deter you from the game. The process of alchemy is simple and easy to learn for beginners to the genre. The NPCs aren't just like "hey gimme items", they have a little bit of story that comes with them which I find pretty neat! I haven't played that far into the game but overall its a very cute and comfy game that you can definitely enjoy!!
cute
Adorable game, but wait for a sale and keep a few things in in mind.
-The story was very sweet. I love all of the characters, as well as the subtle world-building introduced throughout the narrative. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but a lot of the characters' bad or silly decisions/solutions/reactions actually make a lot of sense considering the age-range of the main cast. Past the typical JRPG quirkiness, there's a lot of touching moments that show genuine character growth where they reflect on their actions. Many of the minor quests also tied in nicely with bigger plot happening in the background. I wish there were a few more side stories between the end of the main story and the grind to 100% Cyan's task list for the final side story. The task list is especially grindy with the "explore this area X amount times" type of quests. I bought a lot of materials through the store on my playthrough, so it took me a couple of extra hours to finish the area goals. It's a requirement to complete all of these tasks to unlock the New Game+ feature, which essentially carries over some data to make a second playthrough easier. -As others have said, if you're a completionist, prepare to commit a lot of time to leveling up all adventurers' skills. I'd recommend starting a New Game+ after getting a good amount of medal bonuses and wish stones so you benefit from the XP boost. -There are also many HIDDEN in-game medals that only appear after you complete their requirements. I found very limited information about how many exist. To my knowledge, there's not really any hint system in-game to figure out these hidden medals, and a lot of them aren't Steam achievements either (For example, you get a hidden medal for drinking water at the tavern 10 times, one unlocks for each character after adventuring 150 times with them, ect). There's no good way to verify if you have all of them, or even if we've discovered all of the information about the available hidden medals. For those interested, the best information I found about these hidden medals is available on the Japanese release's, "笑顔の錬金術師", game wiki and other .jp forums discussing the game. The English wiki is outdated bare bones in comparison. -The Smile Alchemist feels like it was created in anticipation of content updates to keep its systems appealing and fresh throughout the end-game. Unfortunately, there has been very few updates as of June 2025, which means the end-game feels really hollow. Structurally, The Smile Alchemist is like a mobile-game, (which makes sense, considering it released on mobile in Japan before its international port to PC/Console), but it lacks the active support or backlog of content necessary to justify the $20 price-tag. If you want to buy this game, I'd recommend that you wait until it is on sale, which pains me to say because there is so much this game does right. Overall, I definitely enjoyed my time with The Smile Alchemist, despite its issues with pacing and lack of end-game incentives to play. I will probably come back to this title at some point to get the last steam achievement. The story is where this game really shines, and I just wish there was more of it to enjoy. And to the devs/publisher: If a continuation/adaptation of the game's narrative were to ever release, I'd buy it in a heart-beat.
bad game lot of grinding
This is a strange title that is hard to describe and you have to like the tiny niche it falls into to recommend. The game is structured like a visual novel, but with a bit more gameplay. The gameplay mostly revolves around resource management, between your various energy types and item/materials for crafting. Events play out in VN fashion, with no choice in what occurs. Story steps have requirements of reaching a certain number of goals to trigger, or creating a specific item, so it can be a bit grindy between story steps. Anything that is not a cutscene is navigating menus or playing the collection minigame. Money and Distilled Water were the tightest resources. You need at minimum 10,000 distilled water through the course of the game, I was always needing to take adventurers out to get more. Thankfully later on you can craft the water without energy, but you also lose out on a chance to double it. Storywise it reminds me of an early Atelier (or Mana Khemia) game. Nayc is generally a lovable protagonist, somewhat like Rorona from Atelier. You're doing a lot of local and more personal goals rather than some big overarching plot like a typical RPG. Slice of life is a good description. There are some darker story beats later, similar to Rorona and other Atelier titles. Crafting is like an early Atelier, no quality or traits, but the building up from earlier components is still there. This is more focused on bulk crafting rather than making a few very high end items. Graphically it's fine, simple cartoony graphics, limited animations, it's presented VN style. Music is mixed, I liked some but not others. Controls were fine too, menu navigation was snappy and responsive, which is good because a good portion of my 16 hour playthrough was spent in a menu. Overall I liked this title, but only get it if you like visual novels, like early Atelier style crafting, and don't mind a bit of grinding and "busywork" to get between the story beats.
