So I don't usually do reviews. But I really wanted to say something about this game. I was really pleasantly surprised with it. The characters are cute and likeable, the gameplay is fun, and the story takes some interesting turns. I liked how each area in the game looks different from the last and has different gimmicks. While a familiar loop became evident by the second area, the game kept throwing new things at me for the whole game so I never got bored. And the switching mechanic between the two heroes was cool and more important than just for combat. The voice acting did have some moments where the audio was a tad fuzzy, so it kinda took me outta the game when it happens (like maybe 3 times?). Also, some of the puzzles were really hard to figure out and were not obvious at all. But at least each level has this fairy that tells you how to do the puzzles if you talk to her. You just gotta pay a small amount of your ingame money. Most puzzles were okay tho. Pros: Good art Nice variation Good story Fresh gimmicks till the end Easy mode and Hard modes appreciated Secret Levels Cons: Audio a tad fuzzy sometimes Some puzzles almost require you to talk to Cloo and pay some ingame currency. Some more enemy types would have been nice Overall I'd happily give this game an 8/10.
RPG Maker strikes again! The Shenanigans of Cherry and Trix is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. In fairness not all of the assets are flipped here (only most of them). Because some of them are done so badly in MS-Paint, it almost caused a rupture in space-time that sent Bill Gates back in time to stop himself from creating MS-Paint. He certainly would have if he had known it would be used to create this abomination. The artwork here truly is terrible, it's a blend of old retro pixel "art" used as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics (RPG Maker assets), and some the amateurish MS-Paint style drawings (I won't deign to call these "illustrations"). It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can do graphics properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result of these decisions. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development, especially not for-profit on Steam... it's really not acceptable. Notably the developer here couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make an RPG... and that's the only thing RPG Maker can do properly... except it's not even very good for making RPGs. Instead, we have a 2D top down Zelda ripoff, only completely worse in all respects, to the point that this could be considered an insult to the NES. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is remarkable, but also to be expected. This complete and utter rejection of the game from gamers should be a keen information point for anyone considering buying shovelware like this. Gamers just didn't take this seriously, and for good reason. The Shenanigans of Cherry and Trix has the comically over-optimistic price of around $8 USD (you can get professionally developed games from actual game developers for less!), it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll probably get attacked by snakes and die a few times like I did. Okay, all joking aside, I was not expecting this game to pull on my heart like it did. Full disclosure: the dev is my friend, but I bought this game on my own and this is my honest opinion on it. I don't normally play top down games like this. It's usually not really my thing, but I definitely wanted to give this game a shot. And after playing it, I've come to the conclusion that it's honestly such a good game. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and gameplay, am now emotionally attached to the characters, and am determined to unlock as much as I can in the game. There's a lot to do and from what I can tell, it has good replayability. (There are entire levels that I haven't unlocked yet). The game is about 5 1/2 -6 hours long, depending on how you play it and it's honestly such a fun time. I streamed this game and everyone had a blast with it. I thought the dual protagonist/switch mechanic was very unique and really gave a different dimension to the game. Each character has their own skills that only they can use and you have to make sure that neither of them gets too low on health. If one character dies, you lose. It makes you have to think about what you're doing, rather than just running around aimlessly on autopilot. All of the characters are likeable. Yes, even the antagonist, sort of, even if he's still an awful butt. I feel like if this game would have came out 10 years earlier, he would have been one of those characters that would have fanart all over tumblr or something lol. The characters all have their own, very distinct, personalities. The feel fleshed out rather than just plot devices. The dialogue is good and made me laugh quite a bit. The writing is funny and on the nose and even the NPCs dialogue is great. (Looking at you, lamp girl) The music is nice and fun. It suits the game and there wasn't really any particular area that I didn't like listening to the music in. The voice over really isn't bad, especially considering how this is the dev's first game. I thought it was well done. Is this game perfect? Of course not. Nothing ever is and I broke the game at one point. Got too overzealous and button mashed a little too much. From my understanding, that's an engine based flaw though. Overall, there was a lot of love and care put into this game and it shows. I think it's a solid game and I'll certainly be playing it again. I also can't wait to play the other games the dev has made so that I can see how things have improved and so that I can explore more of this world that the dev has created.
This game was very cute! I really liked it. You can tell a lot of heart and effort went into this. Good: -The characters were so cute and lovable. A real high point from this game. -The story had me interested to see where it was going to go. Although it does take a bit of time to get going -The music was so well done. There were times I just stopped and just enjoyed how good it was. -Gameplay isnt super deep but the 2 characters having different abilities kept me on my toes. the OK: -I did feel the levels got a bit repetitive at times but it had enough variety that is wasn't a major issue. The later levels especially change things up in a nice way. There was also hidden areas to find and entire bonus levels to discover. The dev could have gotten away without doing this but took the effort to do it. So that was cool the bad: -There was an enemy that instakills you if it touches you near the end, while I get that it was meant to be a major heightened threat, it was always frustrating to die to them. Despite this game certainly not being perfect, I am really happy I played it. It was well worth the money and I would definitely recommend, especially for rpg make fans.

This game: mostly lighthearted, subtext "I can't believe we elected Trump." The sequel Penelope Syndrome: death everywhere, subtext "I can't believe we elected Trump twice." Edit: okay, I retract the "lighthearted" part after area 4.
