In this game, you control the main character and give orders to a squad of 3 elite Marines with two-digit IQ per squad. It is therefore not surprising that orders must be given several times in a row and constant monitoring must be carried out to ensure that they do not fall into fire, acid, or are blown up by a mine. Unfortunately, the game is full of bugs that have never been fixed. Some of them can completely break the game, so you have to replay the mission in the hope that you won't encounter them this time, or perform unnecessary actions to overcome them, such as using the combination: tactical mode – camera movement – normal mode; rinse and repeat, while the camera should automatically follow your Marine when you press a certain button. In some story missions this is crucial. It is quite common to see message "This skill is missing description / It can damage your squad mates" with the incorrectly displayed cooldown in addition (2 seconds, but in reality, it is 200 seconds) – so you don't even know what this skill is supposed to do and trying to use it can lead to defeat. Disarming a nuclear weapon doesn't work on the first try, and you may think you have disarmed it, but then it explodes. It is written that you can explode it using detonation, but it doesn't work. Quite often, auto-aim takes on a life of its own, constantly switching between modes. Sentry turrets can mysteriously disappear even if they haven't been destroyed. The nuclear weapon that is supposed to help you get to the extraction point appears at the other end of the map when you are running out of time to evacuate. And even if you somehow manage to reach the nuclear warhead's location, there is nothing there – you have simply wasted your time. The reinforcements that "have come" haven't actually come, and if they did arrive (if some squad mates were lost earlier), they would start running through the walls somewhere and get stuck there. Some achievements won't unlock even if you complete all the required conditions, so you will have to play again and there is no guarantee they will unlock next time. This is just a small part of the bugs that the game is teeming with. The developers have added a story mode, although it is hard to call it a story as such. But what can we expect from people unfamiliar with the classics of world literature and history?! They used Mikhail Bulgakov as an ancestor of one of the characters and wrote nonsense about him. In fact, Bulgakov was a Russian and Soviet novelist and playwright, born in the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Besides, Bulgakov is a man, so his surname should have been written in the masculine gender. Furthermore, if you compare the biographies of the same character in Red Solstice and Red Solstice 2: Survivors, it is striking that the developers use the words "ancestor" and "descendant" interchangeably, as if they were synonyms, when in fact they are antonyms. Given all the above, only buy this game if you have strong nerves and are willing to deal mainly with in-game bugs rather than enemies. Otherwise, ignore it.
A sci-fi Diablo 2 | KAMGUSTA's MINI REVIEW A honest sci-fi top down shooter, I could describe it as a refined version of "Alien Shooter" with multiplayer (but you can also play it solo with bots) and a proper story. Keep in mind as of 2025, it is 10 years old and there are way better alternative: The Red Solstice 2, The Ascent, Aliens The Dark Descent, Helldivers, etc. Best played with keyboard & mouse Recommended buy price: 3$ Score: 6/10
Great game
A fantastic tactical sci-fi strategy game with intense combat, cooperative gameplay, and challenging missions that keep players immersed and engaged for hours.
Game is completely unplayable due to darkness. I can see nothing, but interface and markers. Changing resolutions and mods (borderless window, fullscreen) does nothing. Google says, all players with AMD videocards has this issue. Shame to devs!
Dont buy it don't even get it for free. Its been with no support of any kind for 4+ years and basically does not work on amd hardware.
The Red Solstice is a tense, atmospheric blend of real-time action and tactical decision-making that drops you into the chaos of a collapsing Martian colony. Developed and published by Ironward, it follows a squad of elite marines deployed into the Tharsis colony during a lethal storm that has severed communication and unleashed hordes of mutated creatures. From the beginning, the game positions itself as a high-pressure survival experience where every step forward feels risky and every decision can tilt a mission toward success or disaster. Rather than relying on scripted spectacle, it builds its intensity through tight mechanics, overwhelming odds, and the constant threat of failure. The game’s core strength lies in how seamlessly it merges real-time combat with tactical control. You play from a top-down perspective, guiding either a single marine or, in solo missions, issuing orders to AI-controlled squadmates. Eight distinct classes offer radically different playstyles, from the heavy gunner who anchors the team’s defenses to reconnaissance specialists who scout ahead and medics who hold wounded marines together in desperate firefights. Each class comes with its own skills, cooldowns, and equipment loadouts, making coordination essential, particularly in multiplayer. The moment-to-moment gameplay demands constant awareness—enemy swarms move quickly, ammunition burns fast, and objectives continually shift as the map floods with new threats. Missions are long, often lasting close to an hour, and shaped by dynamic events that force you to adapt. Although map layouts are fixed, enemy spawns, objectives, and environmental hazards are randomized enough to keep each run unpredictable. This unpredictability is what fuels the game’s tension: a route that was safe in your last attempt may be overrun this time, or a supply cache you were counting on might be guarded by an unexpected threat. The storm itself plays a role too, creating urgency and ensuring you never linger in one place for long. As the pressure mounts, you must decide when to regroup, when to push forward, and when to risk splitting up—decisions that can have immediate and brutal consequences. Visually, The Red Solstice creates a grim, oppressive atmosphere. Dark corridors, flickering lights, and cluttered industrial interiors make the colony feel abandoned and dangerous, while the Martian storm outside adds a sense of isolation. Creature designs are grotesque and numerous, swarming in packs or emerging from vents and shadows with alarming speed. The soundscape amplifies this sense of threat: distant screams, metallic echoes, and urgent radio chatter pull you further into the chaos. Although the top-down perspective might seem like it would lessen immersion, the game manages to convey dread surprisingly well through audio cues and tightly spaced environments. The game’s biggest barrier is its difficulty and steep learning curve. New players are often overwhelmed not just by the enemies, but by the sheer number of abilities, class combinations, and tactical considerations that become crucial as challenges escalate. Without patience—or teammates willing to guide you—the early missions can feel punishing. The interface also carries a level of complexity that requires some acclimation. While the tactical pause feature offers momentary relief in solo play, many of the game’s systems remain at their best when handled through coordinated teamwork rather than individual improvisation. Multiplayer is where The Red Solstice truly shines. With up to eight players working together, each contributing their skills and strategies, the game becomes a frantic but deeply rewarding cooperative experience. Teams must share resources, cover chokepoints, revive downed marines, and constantly adapt as objectives change. Communication is essential, and when everything clicks—when medics stabilize the line, heavy gunners suppress a swarm, and scouts secure a path—the sense of camaraderie is remarkable. Solo play is viable thanks to AI companions, but it lacks the layered coordination and energy that define the game at its best. Despite its demanding nature, The Red Solstice rewards investment with thrilling moments of survival: last-second evacuations, desperate stand-offs, narrow escapes, and missions that collapse or succeed by the slimmest margin. It is a game built for players who enjoy mastering systems, cooperating under pressure, and accepting failure as part of the experience. Those looking for a casual shooter or a relaxed strategy game may find its intensity and unforgiving structure off-putting, but players seeking tension, depth, and teamwork will discover a robust and memorable tactical survival title. In the end, The Red Solstice stands out as a deliberate, challenging, and atmospheric experience that respects the player’s willingness to learn and adapt. It delivers strategy, action, and relentless pressure in equal measure, making it a standout option for fans of cooperative tactical games. When approached with patience and a team by your side, it offers some of the most gripping sci-fi survival moments the genre has to offer. Rating: 7/10
Unfortunately, a good idea failed with a bad realization. Even in a medium difficulty, non-stop spamming with enemies is not fun at all. The worst moment, is during a mission there is an unlimited spawn of creepers. Now I completely understand why this game failed to success and the second one has the same issue. After respawn, all used items are missed, but enemy hives are respawned, and grenade launcher is not rechargable at all. Overall, no balance and no fun after 4th mission.
