eh the game is ok. nothing special. very much the same thing over and over. some paragraph followed by some very similar combat as before. even the story line isnt really a story line that you can control. a few times make a left or right choice. but mostly, it just tells you how you handled yourself that let you into a fight. Its maybe something to buy on a huge discount to have a few hrs of fun of an interesting idea.
I gave up after 90 minutes of playing. I loved mix n' matching heroes, and the setting sounded promising, but the in-battle autosaves are utterly bugged, the battles are the same boorish set of annoying turn-by-turn hexagonal movement set without the charm or storyline of other TbT games, and RNG is woefully inadequate. So eh. Maybe you'll like it, I sure don't.
Shieldwall Chronicles: Swords of the North is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as a cash grab. It's a basic fantasy/medieval turn based strategy with hex-map combat. As far as turn based strategy games go, this isn't the worst, but there's some issues like typos and other quality of life problems. As is common with mobile apps, the game assets are fairly low poly/low quality to cater for the mobile devices the game was designed for. Likewise, resolution and controls are locked, which is unacceptable for a PC game. Numerous other compromises were made to facilitate iPhones. Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to screw over PC gamers. On Steam, this is an insane $15 USD (for a mobile app!), on app stores, it's $6 USD. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay almost three times as much for a mobile app so they can pretend their gaming rigs are iPhones.
Going into playing "Shieldwall Chronicles: Swords of the North", I was expecting a turn-based RPG, in the vein of Blackguards or Solasta, based on the information on the sale page and the vidoes/screenshots presented. I was pretty disappointed at how shallow the game seemed compared to other RPG's, as you can not create your own characters, and there is ZERO exploration. You go battle to battle with just a bit of text in between, and the ability to swap members or go to the shop to get better equipment. I nearly gave up after a couple hours, but then I started to find the battles enjoyable. You can customize the difficulty on the fly, and you have the ability to grind up gold/levels by replaying earlier battles. The battles aren't too long for the most part, and the objectives vary (kill all the enemies/destroy a specific enemy/survive a certain amount of rounds) to mix it up a bit. Where the game gets my true recommendation , however, is due to how CASUAL it is overall. Time has been at a premium for me and I simply haven't had the time to play a proper, large-scale engrossing RPG for hours a night or on the weekend like I have in the past (as of this writing, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous sits unplayed in my library, as I want to devote the proper time to play it). Right now, Shieldwall Chronicles satisfies the turn-based itch well enough and if I don't have the time to play for a few nights, I won't be lost in the story or forgetting where I have to go next. Recommended for people looking for a casual turn-based battler, but not a proper grand role playing game. Get it on sale!
It's an okay game. I routinely miss 2-3 times a battle at 95% hit chance. I don't know how many times I swing, but its not 50+ per battle. I routinely miss 3 times in a row with a 70% chance to hit. I haven't kept stats, but It's not even close to what it should be. It's also sometimes a slog, taking a long time to get from one end of the map to another. I cant find any equipment for certain stats (movement points, extra attacks, etc). All those complaints aside, there is a wide variety of tactics available, and it's fun finding interesting combinations of characters to use to min max. The story is...lackluster, and the options are meager. I'm just tired of missing so much, when I've maxed out my hit skill and the % reads high. It makes everything take longer and is frustrating.
Very good game. Especially liked the turn-based tactical battles and the ability to replay battles to build up your team. Would like to have had the ability to also play the other option when there was a choice.
I can't believe I forgot to leave a review for this game. This game is excellent, as are all the Wave Light Games. I own all five games, and all are worth the money at full price.
Trash like all the others.
Game glitched out on me in the time shown above. Hard lock after moving, unable to continue. The characters are mostly very plain & unheroic looking, with the notable exception of the female centaur. They guys all need more muscle, the women could do with looking a bit more shapely. It would be nice if you could change the character portraits. It annoyed me that there doesn't appear to be any sort of flanking bonus. An overwatch option for ranged attacks would also be nice. The other route you could take is just to turn it into an autobattler, since as it is there isn't much strategic depth anyway, & having to make obvious moves all the time just feels tedious.
