The Real Texas

I purchased and put at least 10-20 hours into this game way back in 2012, and really enjoyed finishing it. I'm a pretty old school PC gamer, but I also enjoy more streamlined console RPGs. To me, this game is the best of both worlds. Some of it feels like the older Ultima games, with lots of freedom when talking to characters, managing and discovering items, puzzling, and RPGing. However many elements are closer to a Legend of Zelda title, with a mostly linear narrative, action based combat, simple character progression, and overworld exploration. Some of the controls may take getting used to. Make sure you have a keyboard/mouse setup to enjoy the game properly. Graphically it's very stylized. The style grows on you as you play. So does Yesso's amazing soundtrack. Finally, I'd like to touch on the story and characters. The writing and characters are interesting, but best of all, everything feels like it belongs in the world. The layout of the world makes sense, even as there are many mysteries to discover. There are quirky characters, but they don't spout snarky, self referential lines. After 3 years, I don't recall all the details of the story. But I do remember feeling something *real* as I explored the world of Real Texas. Highly recommended, and I can't wait to dive back in via the DLC.

One of the most charming games I've ever played. I grabbed this when it came out originally a few years ago and couldn't put it down. The writing is great, the music is perfect and the entire game strikes a tone that I've really never found in any other game. Incredibly excited to play through the new DLC as well.

This game has a special place in my heart. It has some of the best (and odd) worldbuilding, writing, music, and overall feeling of place I've experienced in a game. The graphics, while humble, really fit that world and are abstract enough to make the writing even more evocative. The unique combat is fun at times, but often very frustrating. I personally recommend playing through on invincible mode to casually explore the world and take your time at the well thought out puzzles and story, but ymmv. [I played through most of this game originally off Steam.]

(Played a long time ago off steam) Never understood why this game didn't become a cult classic. It is not traditionally attractive, but you won't find a more self-assured game than this one.

I have yet to finish the game, but I took the championship belt from a wizard by body slamming him in the ring.

This is a super sweet adventure. I found it enormously likeable.

The Real Texas is the only game I can think of where you fight an angry german spouting wizard in a wrestling ring, dive off a turnbuckle to knock him out and take his championship belt. Then he turns into a monkey. This isn't even the strangest thing in this game. As the description of the game itself says, it plays like a blending between ultima and zelda, the game's weirdness can be felt from the beginning all the way to the end. Combat can be extremely unforgiving at times when you find yourself in a headlock from a slime while a midget cyclops zaps you in the junk with a cattle prod, death isn't enough of a setback to make this a real problem though, and if you can look past the simple art style and odd control scheme, there is a LOT to enjoy here, nice soundtrack too.

Legitimately one of my favorite games ever. A very cleverly designed adventure in an imaginative, unique, and internally coherent world with great writing and game design. Cannot recommend enough.

I've had lots of fun exploring this world, glad to see it on steam!
