Painter’s playground Painter’s playground is an interesting “game” in that it is more or a painting simulation that allows the the player to create painting as if they had a canvas. It is technically labeled as a game, though plays more like software, and it indeed useful in practicing your skills with digital painting.
Modes
PPG has two primary modes within it, the first being the creative mode which allows you to create using all available canvas sizes, colors, and tools. The second is the actual game that plays with a limited color palette until you flex your artistic muscles and progress through, unlocking more colors, canvas sizes and even more tools than the standard brush you are given.
Mechanics
It plays similar to many other painting/drawing program, with the exception that when you draw, you gain experience point which are slowly gained for a little bit after you stop drawing but this is meant so you are always gaining points as you draw, even if you pick up the brush and stop drawing temporarily. Experience can be used to level up or gain in-game gold, and as you level up you unlock more slots for more paint colors as well as more slots for your tools. Drawing can be done with a drawing tablet or with the mouse and receptiveness of strokes is decent, there is not a large delay with the stroke and appearance of the color, though if you make a stroke far too fast it does not register properly and comes out as if you have picked up the brush a few times in between strokes. This is not a bad thing, but it does mean all your movements have to be deliberate and not scribbles around randomly.
Tools/Colors
Colors are preset and you are not able to alter them sadly, but the available colors are a decent quantity, more than enough for your creative needs, and are separated by categories, so you can see which would be more suited for your purposes. The tools consist primarily of different brushes for different purposes, but a fill in tool as well as a tool for smudged/blending colors a bit is available as well. The one thing I do see missing that may be useful is a tool for drawing straight lines or for stabilization of some means.
Last thoughts
The inclusion of in-game gold allows one to buy colors and tools, but also sell and buy artworks done by others, though sadly no official way of exporting your artworks as images exists, but screenshots can be taken to capture it and share that way. Your imagination (and skill) are your limit here, it is a bit of an interesting thing to learn how to work this program but some very creative things can be created as I’ve seen in the market from others selling their creations, so if you are patient and willing to learn if you are not well versed in digital art, you can create some very interesting creations.
Verdict: 6/10
If you enjoyed this review please follow our curator here
I genuinely enjoyed my time on this game. Mind you, I am in no way shape or form an "Artist" But being able to doodle and the online feature of it all makes it pretty addictive. It's a really nice feeling being able to show off your hard work or just your random doodles to friends or others in general. I personally never experianced a game like it. Not to mention the community is full of amazing, artistic, kind people. If you enjoy drawing and sharing your work, this game is for you. If you enjoy drawing but don't want to share your work, No worries you can make your work private as well. Try it and see what kind of creations you can make. I personally enjoy the pixel style of it all.
I haven't played this game a whole lot yet, but I wanted to give it a first impressions review. This is a highly stylized MS Paint type of drawing/painting/freedom of artistic impression, with an economy, online community sharing of art, and just a very cool and relaxing painting and light artistic career simulator. I have zero talent painting much of anything that would interest anyone, but that's ok. You paint what you feel. As you paint, you earn experience. With this experience, you buy better painting tools like different brush types, a ton more colors, different canvas types and sizes, etc. It's a cool progression system that gets you drawing and painting. And, the best part is you can share your paintings with EVERYONE ELSE that plays this game. Show off your talent, or lack of talent in my case. Sell your paintings to others. Buy other folks paintings that you admire. It's all a pretty cool system of sharing and building your wealth and art gallery. You can obviously see by just some of the screenshots of the game the possibilities in this game to create some stunning and professional paintings. Or, just doodle, relax and have fun drawing whatever silly stuff comes to mind. It's a great idea of a game, and I hope it does well. I look forward to showing you all some more of my "paintings". :o)
Painter’s Playground on PC / Steam Score 10/10 The Pleasure is in the Mind
A Painting RPG MMO game that hooked me; this is why I relish the Indie / Steam experience. Create your painting, exhibit at the Community Art Center, earn ‘thumbs up’, sell at The Harbor, purchase Art from other Players, acquire colors, tools and larger canvases. Cogitate with pleasure. Return.
XP and rewards VS Inspiration
Relaxing the mind for inspiration and executing a painting while listening to classical guitar, seagulls, and silence is Magical. A plethora of in-game and Steam rewards will keep you happy; however the most compelling element is “make interesting Art”. Accept an Idea from your mind, choose an expressive Style, Execute, sit back, Admire. Go to the Community Art Center, check out other Painter’s works and ‘Thumb up’. Quickly did my digital painting skills improve and my Satisfaction Skyrocketed. The simple and Classic Tool Set force you to improve without distraction; it just works. You will enjoy this experience and some Players will certainly be moved to purchase physical paint brushes and canvases.
RPG Mechanics
The XP upgrade path is logical and definitely needs to be earned. As an example; with increased XP one is able to purchase larger and larger canvases; larger canvases allow you to zoom in and work on detail. In the end these larger canvases look better at full screen than smaller canvases because of improved resolution. That definitely motivated me to paint.
Problems
None. I am curious as to how the MMO aspect will work out.... Although my last name may not be Yellen, how the whole trading Art thing will evolve is going to be very interesting to watch; create, sell, buy, create, sell, buy; Art styles will be evolutionary and will cycle and evolve. Every cohort of players will coexist, coevolve, and conspire. Will they transform into a communist, a religious or an anarchist Art community? (Oooooohhh soo exciting.....)
Who should buy this game?
You. Everyone. The Curious about what makes visual arts interesting? Want a calm and creative experience with a gentle community aspect? Musicians, mechanics, photographers, lawyers, accountants, plumbers, moms, dads and anyone who needs a break. Who doesn’t want a break? If you play FPS and it feels hollow buy this. If you want different.... (like Me)
Wishlist to the Devs
1. In my studio I would like to have 3 active paintings instead of just one. Sometimes I feel saturated and I need to work on a different piece. Once part of my brain is tired I need to move on to a different idea.... 2. Integrate Soundcloud streaming into the game ; )) 3. Guilds ! Yeah, have MMO Guild Vs Guild events...(LOL. Did I just write that?) 4. Multiple persona. Could I create different persona and allow each one to have their own painter’s life?
10/10 The Painter’s Playground
My Scoring Method
10 / exemplary execution of the genre with compelling innovation
9 / exemplary execution of the genre don’t miss out, for fans of the genre and the curious alike 8 / for well done not a must play, fans of the genre and newbs will be happy it is well done 7 / for calibrated expectations only, fans of the genre would not miss out if they skipped this 6 / only for serious fans of the genre for whom game play with bugs is acceptable 5 / enough bugs to make me unhappy February 2018
It's a great idea for software, painting software plus some light rpg elements/collectibles and the social aspect but the painting tools are just too basic. I'm not disputing that you could produce really good looking art with them but they are about at the level of AMX Art that I had back in 1985 on the Amstrad CPC 464. Reply to dev, re: new tools: It's not so much new tools that I would like, but the existing tools working differently. At the moment for example the round and square brushes are really, really basic. I mean all they do is draw a square or a circle in full on colour of the current ink. I get that they are supposed to be oil not watercolour so I shouldn't expect fading at the edges or the start of a stroke or transparency such that painting an area then painting over it makes the part that received two strokes have a bolder colour but you need SOMETHING to make it more nuanced, I mean you are literally just blitting a one colour square or rectangle to the screen- it's so basic. Look at the real oil paint in the program's picture at top right there: you have a texture to the paint on the canvas because the brush is composed of bristles and those same bristles mean that the start and end of a stroke are uneven, not straight. Also when you blit the square to the screen you could rotate it to match the direction of the stroke rather than just always blitting an upright square. Also when you move the mouse too fast (which isn't that fast at all) you end up with disconnected circles or squares rather than a stroke. I don't want new tools if they are going to be implemented in a similar way to the existing tools, I would prefer the existing tools to work more realisticly as detailed above. Not merely for the sake of realism but to get more subtlty into the art.
Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
The Painter's Playground is a fun game aimed at anyone who wants to squeeze some creative brain juices onto a few pieces of virtual canvas while being motivated by some relaxing music, sounds of the ocean, birds, etc. I only have a desktop computer to play on, so simple mouse movements works well enough that I do not feel the need to use a touch tablet for drawing. But if you have a windows tablet or a drawing tablet, I would imagine things could be so much better as well. To begin, you do need to register an account for the server, pick a simple password that you can remember, though it will be emailed to you for simple reminders. Pick up your brush, choose your color, and start throwing colors onto the page. Let your thoughts flow freely onto the canvas. Every action earns Renown, which is equivalent to experience, and you can use this toward leveling up when you have earned enough, you can turn your Renoun into Bits (gold), or some other places where the virtual and reality do not meet. In the beginning, you only have one brush and a very small selection of colors. But as you progress, you earn Bits and can purchase different artist tools, different colors, different size canvas, presets, slots for showing or selling your works in the gallery, among other things. If you create something after spending time on it but do not want to keep it or display it, you can quickly sell it to the in-game Crafty Merchant for a few bits. This is a good way to earn a few bits if you are having a not-so-creative day. The community seems to be not as active as it once was, which is unfortunate, because I am brand new to the community, and would love to see some additional activity. This is because there is a community display area for you to see what others have picked out of their works to show to the public. Here you can choose a few of your own works to show as well. You can vote by giving other pieces that you like a few thumbs up, while other people may also like your works and do the same. If there is something that you like and the artist puts it up for sale, you can purchase it if you have enough Bits, so you can amass quite a collection of good artwork, virtually of course, even if you do not create too much on your own. There are daily challenges that offer you simple drawing idea, a blank canvas, and all of the tools and colors that the game has to offer. Often being offered an idea is a great way to allow the deluge of color, thought, and creativity flow onto the small pixel-limited virtual canvas. Doing daily challenges also earns you more Renoun and Bits after you complete your work, name it, and put it into the daily gallery for display. After you complete the challenges, you can also view other people's challenges for the day as well. This is where I had the idea that the community is not too active, because I have not seen too much activity in the daily displays. But then again, perhaps there are more people doing random paintings and just relaxing with the game, instead of proferring their own artwork for display. This game is simple, relaxing, and fun. I wish I had a drawing tablet to enhance my experience with it. And who knows, perhaps that will be in my future. I will try to stick with the daily challenges as long as I can, and for as long as my schedule allows. By the way, as a general disclaimer, I am no artist by any means, I know nothing about color composition, about shading, about anything really. Heck, even my stick figures do not look proportionally correct. But that made me want to do a few artistic things even more, to broaden my horizons by seeing what others can do, to try to stimulate the parts of my brain that has more or less been dormant. I am having fun, and I hope you will pick this up as well and enjoy it as well.
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review. Ryan has kindly presented me with this key, thank you! I also bought a copy for my wife, who's so talanted but rarely gets to draw for she works full time as a manager & gets easily hooked on facebook & clickers, - so I really hope this gamified software might motivate her to self-express much more! Social network functionality for lo-fi, doodle & pixel artists is such an ingenious idea - everyone can cosplay Salvador Dali & get exibited at a gallery with no stress! A newbie needs relaxation as much as appreciation, so positive gamey motivation through gaining levels & the ability to sell work for in-game currency might be the best solution. What you get here is a 2d graphics editor with grinding (almost like clicker), unlocking better stuff including colors, getting achievements, making virtual money, getting rated by the living audience in the gallery (if you wish), daily challenges to provide new ideas. The editor promotes simple attitude being free from complex machine-assisted tools or filters, you should pay with experience points for every use of one-step 'undo' (no 'redo'), even canvas scaling & dragging were implemented quite late in the developement - the guys try to encourage bold quick drawing with free hand, mainly with mouse. The examples below were all drawn with mouse by me. UI feels a bit like you are back in Win'98 workspace, but Im not gonna judge this project for secondary factors, it's not another clone, but a progressive step. There are 2 game in Steam with close topic: 'Passpartout' (AI oriented singleplayer) & 'Pixel Painter' (simultaneous online contests only), this one transcends further & has great perspective for further developement. Gipsy style music & distant seagulls as ambient work really well for getting into character of an artist performing at a mediterranean villa :) http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1298698524 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1297089234 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1297411779
Sit back and relax as you relish in your training days from days past of Mario Paint and Microsoft Paint. This game is essentially the idea of having an online community with a paint program. You can buy, sell, rate, or just observe art. There are plenty of colors to choose from and even if you don't consider yourself artistic (much like myself) you will find enjoyment out of this game for it's simplistic and relaxing pleasures. Is it worth the asking price? I didn't think it was, but this is something I can sit down and imagine myself easily getting 10 hours out of or more. Having a dollar per hour of entertainment for the bare minimal amount of entertainment I will most likely get out of this game is more than fair enough. If you are on the fence, wait for a sale. This game is a great and innovative experience I didn't think I would be into, but was proved wrong pretty quickly.
