A mixed bag with a few issues, but an amazing community run by the indie company and a stand out VS mode keep me coming back for more. The overall gameplay and mechanics are quite cool and unique, with the jet pack flying reminding me somewhat of Rocket League and even diving in and out of water can act as a great way of sneaking up and eliminating your buds. It's a decent skill floor but high ceiling. Jetpack control does serious wonders for you and from what I can tell is going to take a while to master. It can feel a little clunky/frustrating at times when trying to aim and fly. The graphics are probably the stand out thing here, super colourful and quirky. My little brother loves the characters and the maps are all unique. The map specific hazards make levels more interesting. Sadly the campaign can feel a little dull. Even though there is a variety of objectives and maps there's a few problems. For example, the cut scenes can be a little lifeless. Sure asking for speech/voice actors to cover 8 languages might be asking too much given this is an indie title, but would it kill to put in a few cute otter speaks? An option to skip these cut scenes would be great. Although there is a few different enemies, those slow down drones are the WORST. The constant buzzing can get annoying and they just respawn endlessly. I like the music, suits the mood and styles well and gets you hyped. BUT there is a HUGE problem with the sound effects/audio, they're too quiet! For now, I'd recommend putting music down to 10% (yes 10%) and raising SFX too 100% in the main menu options whilst they get this fixed. It's not like I'm hearing this through bad equipment either, I'm using my ADAM F5 speakers. The SFX are mostly good too, little details like each character has their own footsteps too, so you can tell who might be coming around the corner. BUT but you wouldn't know this normally if you hadn't raised the SFX volume and lowered the music! So with all these annoying little things, why would I recommended this game? Two words. VS Mode. This game is mainly worth getting for the VS mode. I've been playing with my family/friends and it's reminded me of the good old days of split screen multi player. It's fun, fast, simple, different and surprisingly tactical. I played the VS at a friends house for the past two weeks before getting this for myself. Additionally, all these problems that I've mentioned from what I can tell on the official discord, are all being looked at and improved by the company. This kind of consideration of player feedback is something I've never really encountered before bar No Man's Sky, and really makes me feel positive about the future of this game. To conclude, this is a diamond in the rough. A few tweaks (that they are working on already) and I'll be happy as Larry. For now, have fun with you buds and bask in the glory of simple split screen fun.
I was really looking forward to this game, but it's at best a beta version. I can overlook the fact that the cinematic sequences are a joke and do not really lead the player into an atmospheric environment. The real issue started for me with the gameplay and controls itself. To really play this with several people you need proper controller support. But the unfortunate truth is, that the controlls are choppy and most frustrating. You can hardly hit anything and looking around is quite disorienting because of the choppyness. There is as well no proper auto aim and just as important an auto aim setting that can be tuned so that players that are not so familiar with shooters have at least somewhat of a chance against more seasoned ones. Then the game modes, where there is no proper explaination delivered how they work. So you end up with frustrating trial and error to figure out what the heck you are supposed to do. The controls are not helping with that either. Looking past that, non of the play modes really made any fun with only two players. There seems to be no concept at all to offer content for that, besides 1vs1 deathmatch (which quickly wears out). And as a last point: I do like toon graphics and I'm very much into games like Battlefield Heros and Awesomenauts, yet this game here needs an epilepsia warning. It's just to much visual stimulus. I can really not recommend the game in its current state to anyone. Anyhow: I'm hoping the developers keep up their effort and turn this around into something great to play. So guys, never give up, never surrender!
I now own this game on multiple platforms. Once on Xbox Once on here. Pros- Game look top notch Easy to understand controls Game has a progression of difficulty over time expected in most story modes. The sound track of this game is amazing each world has a specific theme for a specific character. A wonderful cast of characters all taking inspiration from the games of yester-year. Adaptive play style for the objective based areas of the games. Class based characters each with there own unique abilities. Addictive competitive game-play that makes you think to play object based or a free for all strategy custom character picker for those who love to customise there characters. Constant unlocks keep you hooked on getting the next best upgrade. Finally a lot of care went into the makings of the characters and there worlds with out any of the characters able to speak. Cutscenes introducing characters into the game shown there background of there worlds and helped show each individual unique back story. Cons- Minor game crash one (xbox) a few minor glitches but nothing a small upate cant fix. All in all enjoyable easy to learn addictive and competitive
This game is "otterly" brilliant, my favourite part is playing with friends in the pvp modes.
Own both this version and Switch version and it's a good laugh. Great art, great audio, great team behind it
Nice game. Looks great and plays well too. Defo worth a purchase if you like games like splatoon. This is otter madness!
