Can't recommend it as achievements no longer seem to be working, which was the only reason I went BACK to the game after finishing it a few years ago.
Character Shen is always voting to turn you into villain its best to have different option if there was? But I don't think so. Not recommended to anyone to play think if there was other options. like: zero options liked dislike: too many choose from. Personal opinion: make game have better story options then salvage, explore, find another resource if your using rovers? There are no tools gained which bothers me? In mining platform Lucy never get new tools made what heck do colonists do? what are their skills as assets? Playing foolish blame game are they just children in this game have no idea maybe they should question why was I sent million light years away maybe earth is gone? Duh. Blaming and killing navigator is one way screw yourselves. I think whoever plays leader is freaking scape goat there no win win policy much like another game you still die no matter what.
Achievements are 100% broken in this game, so they'll stay as locked in your Steam UI forever, which is a bit annoying. And apparently the dev(s) no longer support it and have effectively abandoned it citing "It's playable" , so one shouldn't expect this or any other issues faced with this game to ever get fixed. ( https://steamcommunity.com/app/427860/discussions/0/3159763879064282090/ ) Other than that and a slight waft of "woke" to the game, i can't say i totally hated it. Some might even find it enjoyable if accustomed to reading relatively fat fictional literature about facial expressions, character backgrounds and s**t like that. It's biggest plus is probably that it's got some levels of open-ended'ness to it, and thus some re-playability. (Though that'll probably feel quite hampered by the lack of achievements..)
Buy it at heavy discount only, if ever.
I do not recommend "The Next World" at all. It suffers from three huge flaws: 1) Trope-iness, 2) Tastelessness, 3) Brokenness. Spoiler-free summary: 1) The story is predictable, the conflict is forced, and the premise is compromised by blowing the stakes so out of proportion the figurative human element is lost. 2) The human element is also literally lost - lives are used as a kind of game currency. 3) Whatever math is supposed to be running in the background to track the numbers stopped functioning in the second to last chapter and never recovered. I will elaborate these below, but there are SPOILERS AHEAD, so stop here if that would upset you. Trope-iness The villain doesn't bluff? Neither do I. I knew the choice would cause a catastrophic game over and I welcomed it. When it happened, I smiled. I did not view it as a failure nor tragedy. Instead, it confirmed everything I'd been thinking about how dreadfully predictable and inane the writing was. Of course the arch villain would have to have his "I'm invincible so I will explain what's really going on" moment with your clueless protagonist. I mean ... you literally are told to "choose your protagonist" just after the confusing intro (I had no idea who the "you" was for the first 10 minutes), which implied there would have to be a big (implausibly evil) antagonist. If the author is not allowed to deliver the exposition via his villain, the story would just have to end, wouldn't it? That the encounter with the villain would occur at all was preposterous. It was cringe inducing. Tastelessness The survival of 1000 people just wasn't enough to hang a story on, eh? Nope, their lives are literally used as currency to advance the plot, which has to take on cartoonishly monstrous proportions lest the reader not realize just how important the author's vision was, right? Humanity has to be painted as being forever consigned to two camps: hapless good guys flailing about in their naive ignorance, and a big baddie with a god-complex served by the faceless forces of evil who are the source of all suffering and misfortune. It is in poor taste to see human lives counted down as a ticker next to counters for supplies and resources. It is disgusting to see lives literally used as a game play mechanic to purchase plot events. It may not be framed as that, but think about it, that's what this game does. Brokenness Eventually, the resource gathering numbers stopped adding up and changing rations had no effect on mood or health. It was late enough in the plot, I hadn't made any saves along the way, and it wasn't stopping the story, so I just ignored the survival element at that point. What a waste. I liked the background art, though.
I have played hoping bugs what people mentioned are fixed. Unfortunatly no. Nice story, but how games change after some of your choices are often silly. I stop playing when I stuck after one of my decisions about reactor, when I could not build anything because I didn't have anough energy. Sad thing is, I have habitatt in reserve I switched off some other modules and in theory I should build that thing, but I couldn't. Sad. It was a moment when story starts unveil in interesting way.
Visuals: nice but minimalistic Gameplay: Basic but sufficient for a 5 hour game, though some later-game ideas feel quite random. Story: Very nice original story that makes you reflect about humanity and its purpose without forcing it down your throat. The best part about the game is that it makes you carefully consider your options as your choices can have heavy consequences and you're often trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Disclaimer: I have no idea how I got the game but definitely did not just outright buy it. Maybe out of a humble bundle? Conclusion: Nice and short experience, it has a very short time to beat so it might come down to how much you are willing to pay for ~5h of gameplay.
