As a fan of old Warcraft 3 custom games and the old mobile game Fieldrunners, Necromancer Cometh is a fantastic new addition to this tradition of customize-able and challenging tower defense games. It scratches that exact spot that, for years, I just couldn't reach on a slow Thursday evening. The card based loudout system made me groan a little at first, but it's proved to be simple and intuitive. Combined with the randomized shop, no game is quite the same and you are forced to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate tower strengths per map. On the topic of maps, each level seems to have a set number of preplaced towers and hazards that characterize them, but the specific objects and nuances in layout change each time, possibly through procedural generation. The stable components have done an excellent job in inspiring new strategies and the search for new solutions, while the changing ones can be frustrating while resetting for a first clear; you can't always just try the same strategy with one tweak because a new tree might be in the way. But I do see the appeal for repeated runs. Lastly, the enemies thus far have been engaging enough. There are certain enemy quirks that I always make sure I have a solutions to in my loadout, and my loadout is never exactly the same map to map. I've even been able to get away with some really wacky strategies like only using the base melee tower with 30ish power-ups for some re-clears. Overall, as a fan of tower defense games that often feels let down by the new-releases, I couldn't recommend Necromancer Cometh more.

Finally, tower defence that feels classic, but also new. this one gives me a modernised "flash td game" feel that ive been searching for for a while! seemingly good basic no frills TD games seem to be far and few between. however in comes this gem! now, its not fully old skool 00s classic, it does have some modernisations such as the ability to pathfind (which i love) and ofc there is a light deckbuilding mechanic... BUT you can actually weight this mechanic in your favour and customise your decks. you dont have to have some cards in rotation, and you can actually make others more liekly to appear. overall this is a decent quality, casual fun TD game, and ive enjoyed my time so far! (my play time is lower because ive played the demo a bunch, and it turns out my progress carried over!) anyway, if like me you have been searching for light hearted, non serious Tower Defence games that arent trying to be 20 different genres at once, then this is the game for you. try the demo, get the game, support this dev i think so far the game seems awesome! i love personally the weighting mechanics on the cards, and i love the way progression feels. also it has difficulty options too!
Good stuff.
"My rule will soon be unquestioned across the realms! We march, my minions! To the forest- Oh hang on, there's this little angry tree boxer in the way. Strange, he wasn't blocking me earlier... Well, adjust course, my minions! Soon, none shall - is that another one? But they're so tiny... Uhh..."
Seems like a fun wee game, and I do love being able to make my own mazes. I'm not sure the card thing fits the genre, and for me the lack of controller support (which I should have checked first! - my bad), and no "pause and place" function makes this game a non-starter for me. But I'd still recommend the game for those who maybe played Fieldrunners on mobile. Mazes is fun.
Fun game. Soundtrack is great, too.
The Necromancer Cometh is a solid tower defense game that focuses primarily on mazing. Mazing is when you can place your towers on the map to change the enemies path, introducing a twist to the standard tower defense formula. This mechanic pairs very naturally with the tower defense gameplay since, by changing the enemies path to go around your towers, you can create even more danger for them and get more value out of each tower. As far as I know this is the only tower defense game which focuses primarily on this mechanic, making it a unique choice for TD fans. There are a lot of levels to play through currently, and the deckbuilding gives a nice sense of progression through the campaign. Each level you have a deck of cards which controls what towers and upgrades are available for you to buy. Which cards you choose for your deck is very important and each card feels like it has its own unique purpose. And just when you feel like you've developed a good strategy with your deck, the campaign will introduce a new enemy or mechanic which brings a new challenge. Although a relatively simple system, it brings a nice sense of variety and progression to the game. The theme of the game is also very enjoyable. Both the art and the music are very nice and it's fun playing just to see what new characters will be introduced. Overall The Necromancer Cometh is a solid choice for any tower defense fans, and a definite buy if you like mazing! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next in Early Access!
