First I had to rename the exe in order to launch it, because the dev made a small configuration mistake with the exe name. But once it got working I wasn't thrilled. The framerate is really too low and it's not really playable on my integrated GFX laptop. Next time the dev should chose a game engine that doesn't suck, and maybe not use a ton of particles and light effects on every screen, because there is no reason I should use a" gamer-PC" to run this game.
This game is very unique in that it tells multiple stories that weave together in expecting and unexpecting ways, the sound track really adds to the depth of each area you explore and the environments are breathtaking to behold. There are also bonuses to discover for the keen adventurer, along with many puzzles to solve,

The Lost Cave of the Ozarks hits the mark aesthetically, but there are some gameplay and design misses that make it a bit of a grind to play. The Good: The visuals of this game are where it really shines; The game is beautifully illustrated and the visuals are very well done technically. You can tell the environments are hand-crafted and do a good job of filling out the setting. The backgrounds move fluidly and really give you a sense of the space you are exploring. The music is also very nice and fits the game very well. The characters in the game are all very well designed and animated, really giving you an original, distinct, cohesive style. The boss battles in particular are very memorable and some of the best moments in the game (as long as they aren't chasing you...) There are some interesting mechanics at play and some original puzzle ideas that I hadn't seen before. Using the lantern as a way to indicate stamina level was a really great idea. (though I have other thoughts on the stamina mechanic...) The story, while a little vague, is really interesting, and there are some very cool ways that the game handles the narrative. The Bad: The most frustrating part of the experience is the tutorial sequence. I feel like forcing a new player to learn the mechanics of your game while being chased by a wall of fire was not a good choice. I'm a game enthusiast and enjoy getting a feel for new games and I nearly gave up in frustration in the first 5-10 minutes of play. Once you get past the tutorial, the experience improves greatly. I also think that stamina management as a game mechanic was not a good choice for this game. To me, it did not serve the gameplay at all and only functioned to limit and frustrate the player. I can understand why you might want to have stamina management for some of the chase sequences, but I think it would have been better to test the player's skill with some challenging obstacles during the chase rather than an arbitrary limiting mechanic. The puzzles in the game were often very unclear in how they were to be solved, and key paths to solving puzzles were hidden in ways that you would expect secrets to be hidden, not for puzzles you need to solve to complete the game. This led to a lot of retracing steps and spending a lot of time going back and forth to find answers to puzzles, which really brought the enjoyment to a halt. I also ran into some technical bugs using the keyboard and sometimes with the controller, where after respawning the controls become unresponsive until I restart the level. Overall, I enjoyed it despite its flaws. You really get a sense of the love that the developer put into the visuals of this game. This was a product of a single developer, primarily an artist, who may not have had all of the programming or design experience needed to really stick the landing on a full game. TLCotO is worth a playthrough, and I hope anyone reading this will seek out and support your local indie developers.
