The game gets worse with each passing year and the devs are lying more and more about delays and breaking promises. The delving armor got delayed because "it needed rebalancing" and the 3+ months delay brought us the SAME armor with scaled stats. Sad to see how a great game can be ruined... and I though Codemasters and Turbine were bad with their "soon®".
Coming from an all fps background, my wife introduced me to this game 5 years ago. Now I've been playing via Steam for the last couple of months more intens, and all I can do is recommend it. It has lore, huge worlds, good aged graphics (sure characters can get an update, but I'm 38, so I'm used on seeing blocks on a screen since I was a kid), in depht quests and overall a good class system. Recommend 100% for hours upon hours of relaxation, tension and fun!

I don't usually post reviews on Steam but I felt obligated to post my first one here. 766 hours played on this game on Steam and hundreds more, if not thousands, pre-Steam. Lifetime Subscription and way too much money spent. I haven't played in nearly a decade since the Mac compatibility on Steam went away. Got a nice new PC recently and the first thing I wanted to do was fire up Lotro. My account was not found. None of the resets worked on SSG for any of my known usernames or emails. Support was not support, they more or less told me that I'm not me and to stop trying. The account is registered in my name. My name is very unique. Very disappointing support as I was so excited to return to this wonderful game. No longer.
the game isn't what it used to be. expansion prices to catch up to endgame is extremely expensive and they still require you to pay for things on top of that. It's not about lotro anymore its about money. play something else and dont waste your time.
Can't even get the game open. Install the game, then sit and watch the launcher load 40,000 files for days. Have no idea if the game is good; couldn't get that far.

I just “finished” a playthrough of LOTRO for the first time. For me, I wanted to get through what’s covered in the books. Played in high school briefly, but not much, just very low levels. I played on Landscape Difficulty 3, Champion. 1-50 reminds me of FF14 MSQ with a ton of backtracking and filler. A one month sub is mandatory for unlocking fast travel. Eventually I broke down and subbed for 3 months for bonus xp so I wouldn’t lose steam. The nice thing is that this section of the game sets up the Dunedain well, and there is story payoff later. There a clear love for the lore and some great writing throughout that helps a ton. Moria is peak. The atmosphere is so incredible, I didn’t care about backtracking or the challenge navigating the map. Lorien was great as well. Rohan I heard was terrible for melee but I actually thought the flow was significantly better so the wonky mounted combat was offset by fairly quick progression. The Helms Deep epic battles are poorly designed for solo. Minas Tirith does much better. The worst area was Minas Tirith by far. Very cool to be there but I hated navigating through the city. Backtracking here is so annoying. Thankfully it’s not super long. That being said, I finished this past week and I’m glad I did. I also have no desire to go beyond 104.
I've tried GW2, WoW retail and classic, WildStar (rip), Warhammer Return of Reckoning, GW1, Starwars online, ESO, ... None could please my ADHD as much as this one. Levelling: slow as snails classes: impeccable, where the above listed mmorpgs usually have the same classes, lotro has different ones. Warden is the class that solved my altoholism. basically the Tekken mmo experience... not that i played much Tekken but yeah... eurhm Dwarf master race. yes, there's plenty of elven rangers. that'll be this game's basic human warrior i suppose.
The game has not aged well, unfortunately. Quests are generic, combat mechanics are clunky and while the graphics have a certain charm, they're still very dated. Text can be hard to read sometimes and icons are low-resolution and borderline blurry. After spending 70 hours or so in the game, I'm still not impressed with the storyline or narration, and there are unfortunately tons of fetch quests. It feels uninspired and I think that it's a natural reflection of trying the game in 2026 and being spoiled by so many more immersive gameplay experience since LOTRO was released. I'm a big Tolkien fan, so I really wanted to like the game, but the overall clunkiness and uninspiring gameplay, combined with a mediocre plotline outside of the fellowship.... I just cannot recommend it or bring myself to play any more. It's free to play for a lot of the content, up to level 95, so by all means, give it a try and see for yourself :)
Despite heaving 5ish hours as of writing this review, I've only played for about three hours across two different characters. The main reason why my playtime's high is due to troubleshooting the launcher. I am leaving this review so early because I want to share the steps that I did to get the game running.
LOTRO client/launcher stuck while patching on a .dat or .datx (or stuck at 88%)

Navigate to your Lord of the Rings Online installation folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\The Lord of the Rings Online).
Delete all files in this folder with a dat or datx file type. (They will all end in .dat or .datx)
Restart the LOTRO launcher and the application should repair itself.
I hope that helps some, and I will also be sure to update my review as I continue playing the game!
