Formerly a GREAT alternative to WoW, but fell far, FAR from grace ever since Gamigo bought it which... Gamigo is known to buy MMOs and kill them very quickly by making them (essentially) credit card simulators. As pay-to-win as physically possible while also doing the absolute bare minimum to keep the game "alive". Rift had so much potential and it could have been one of the giants but the devs committed the greatest sin which is selling out to this garbage company. As a former player of Rift, sincerely, I hope you stub your toe as hard as physically possible every single day of your life, Trion, you destroyed a great game.
Rift was a great game with SO much potential, many years ago. As you can see by my hours played, I was a fan. Until they were bought out and destroyed by pay-to-win and slop for updates. One of the deciding factors for putting this game down was when they started selling the top tier end-game raid gear on the cash shop. I often randomly look into Rift to see how things are going, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, it has been a steady and hard decline since I stopped playing back in 2019. Save your time and money, look elsewhere folks.

>Decide to try Rift >Join German Server on accident >WhateverTooLateNow.jpg >Make boss looking character, log in >Spawn in starting zone, start walking towards first quest marker >Game mod spawns, starts screaming at me in german. >"SIE KÖNNEN NICHT HIER!! SIE KÖNNEN NICHT HIER!!" >WTFAreYouSaying.jpg >GM Adolf is still screaming SIE KÖNNEN NICHT HIER >Ignore him, go to quest marker pick up quest >Game client instantly closes. >Banned for 3 days. >10/10 would play again
Ignore the hours played, as I didn't play this game through Steam. This was my favorite game ever when it first came out. Then it went Free to Play and immediately took a never ending nosedive into being the worst joke ever told. I remember logging in one day, right after the Free to Play update, seeing my hard earned raid gear in their brand new F2P store section for someone to acquire with the swipe of their credit card. I logged out, and I never logged back in. God that feels like a lifetime ago.
This is insane, I love it, how can I not know gem like this existed, it's like a flashback to the best era of MMORPGS and it's really active, like even starting zone had this random zone invasion and all these people popped around closed rifts, killed a boss what is even going on, amazing and very nostalgic experience that I've been longing to relive and this hidden gem gave it to me, just hit 40 level, community is just lovely too, received tons of free stuff from random people, like gigantic premium bags that cost 50$ if you were to buy them from shop lmao, I'm seeing this one through for sure, I'll probably play this game until it closes servers, because it apparently haven't changed or "modernized" like many titles like WoW do while losing their soul in the process, finding a real OG like this with active community is amazing, thank you whoever is still keeping this alive.
This game is still fun after all these years but know for all new or returning adventurers on new accounts, it will be a slow grind at the lowers levels till 60, you will be on your owns. I still give it a positive rating.
RIFT deserves better than to be put on life support by Gamigo
A quick comparison of this game for a newcomer would probably be classic WoW. Its from the same era of WotLK and Cataclysm; and features much of the same type of content and activity loop. The game has been in maintenance mode for about 9 years now and doesn't receive content updates or visual improvements. I was expecting to see empty servers but I can happily report that this game still has enough players online in 2026 to find groups to play with and do the endgame content. Though dungeon finder rarely ever procs, for that you may consider running a static with some friends or joining a guild. These other recent negative reviews seem to be idiots complaining about the game being dated or not even knowing what genre they are playing. This game originally came out in 2011 by Trion (the steam page is incorrect) so yes, this is an old game. Its tab target. Its got a time consuming theme-park campaign to grind through. It might take you a month to hit max level doing WoW-style questing. Might as well complain that the sun is hot. The game is perfectly viable as a f2p, but the patron status (the optional monthly sub) speeds up leveling, reputation gain, and dungeon marks by upwards of 40%, so that's pretty significant. Some of the non-vanilla class skill trees require purchase to unlock, which won't stop you from being viable but may get in the way of a few 'meta' build guides. For those saying the game is p2w- the pvp in the current game has pretty much decayed into a barely relevant side minigame which awards some marks for pve gear. The only 'winning' you do in this game is gearing up for pve. Yes, you can pay for a lot of stuff if you prefer to pay to not play your games, but nobodies 'winning' in a cooperative pve experience. New players should probably consider starting on the Deepwood server shard, which seems to have the largest population of player resurgence. players can teleport between shards at will, and can transfer characters for free once a week, but Deepwood will give you the largest pool of guilds to join as a new player. Some players will even lock their level to 50 to play the original content how it was meant to be experienced.
Downloaded on a whim. Created an account. Authentication failed. Reset password. Authentication failed. After the third try to actually log in after going through their reset process and having to prove I'm not a robot every time, I gave up. The whim has passed and so will I on this game if their account management system is so trash.
Bring back rift classic
