Great little Halloween 🎃 mystery. Highly recommend! Not to be missed if you adore the Dark Fall Lost Crown series. My only issue is that the Steam Overlay does not work with this game. Hoping this gets fixed. The Last Crown Midnight Horror is a solid addition to this amazing series.
Great little spooky game. Enjoyed it :) Recommend pumpkin pie whilst playing hehe
I thought about it and went back n forth on a rating. For a minute I was going to say I wish there were a neutral choice, but not really. This game is just a real clunker. Too bad because the graphics are kind of cool, there are many very cozy rooms and characters; although most of them are NPCs you can't communicate with. There are a couple of cozy things like games and ghost equipment. The problem is you almost NEVER know what to do next! Most games give you at least some idea, but not this one. Most of the "progress" comes by accident. I don't mind exploration, but this is ridiculous. On top of that, when you do finally accomplish something, you only find yourself wandering around in circles not knowing what the hell to do next. The rest is just a mess. And object exploration is nearly non-existent, meaning, how many times are you going to hear him say - that's a bad idea. It's like being scolded for exploring, which is the very thing the game forces you to do! It also really needs a hotspot indicator since objects and locations are very easy to miss. At this point I'm not sure I can even finish it. Games are supposed to be fun and this one could be but just isn't. It had the potential to be cozy too. Halloween, ghosts, EMF equipment, a mystery, lots of characters, dialogl objects etc. Should be an amazing game! But instead it's just a mess. UPDATE: Here's what kills me: Darkling Room's previous game LOST CROWN A Ghost Hunting Adventure was an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!! As in one of the very best Top 10 games there is!! Which makes this review even more difficult for me! How could a team who create such an incredible game make this nonsense? I hope the 3rd installment goes back to the original because we know this team is gifted and able of making another gem. Fingers crossed!!!
Excellent segue to the final chapter in The Lost Crown Series. This transition piece was a welcome surprise by Jonathan Boakes, and ran about 5hrs of gameplay. The setting was lovely as always in Boakes games', and the atmosphere was suitably haunting (yes, the pun is intended). Plot was also egaging for a shorter game. There were a few thing that were left unresolved, but I'm assuming (hoping) those will be resolved in the next installment. Overall, well done and worth the price.
I'll say right off the bat that I"d only recommend buying this if ( big if) you have played Lost Crown and IF your waiting for the third installment and IF you don't mind playing a rather shorter in between game. That said, I really enjoyed Lost Crown and wanted to get the next two chapters in Nigel's adventures but I found Midnight Horror a bit lackluster and just felt like this was a fill in that could have easily been attached to the third installment as a prequel to that one instead of a seperate game or something that could have been attached to Lost Crown as a bonus game. I honestly prefer the graphics of the first game even though this one is supposed to look more polished the characters to me just didn't have the same look I was used to from the first one so some of the characters we revisit felt as if totally new actors took on a role in some show your supposed to believe are the same people. Your in much smaller area then the first game so exploring around thinking you can possibly go to some of the same places or even areas in the same places are different so you feel to restricted, it loses the feel the other game had in finding new places to explore and you didn't get the same feeling you may bump into a new situation or clue to what was going on. This takes place on Halloween and centers around a party and a ghost story but the story was lackluster too and I realize it's really just a lead in to the third installment but that said I still don't see why this couldn't have been then attached to third one as an intro to it and then just had both packaged in one game. I"m only putting recommend because there is no maybe if you enjoyed the first, waiting for the third and wanted to continue the adventure however I really didn't feel like this was much of an adventure. I still look forward to the third installment and really hope there is much more similar feel to the first one in the third one then the second one because if it's anything like the second installment I'll be a bit disappointed. If you read my review on Lost Crown then you know I purchased that game when it came out and had the boxed version and had never finished it at the time and when I saw that steam had it I really wanted to revisit it and finally got a chance to finish the game. I didn't know there was a second one and a third coming out so having just finished the first installment I was compelled to get this one, hey it cost me the price of a small starbuck's coffee and was added to the game gifts to myself for my birthday so it filled in a few hours of time. just wish there had been more to it.
I was little put off by some negative comments that say how slow the game is etc., but when I play it, it reminds me of classic old point and click adventures. People saying it is slow or boring probablly don´t know how an actual point and click adventure looks like. Not many good like this is still made nowaydays, so I´m very happy with it. Maybe the puzzles are too hard on me, but it is very nice game.
Got stuck a few times... where there's a will (and friendly discussion forums ;) ) there's a way. Keep your mask ON! lol Loved it. Can't wait for the other crown games to come out ^_^
Oh, I've been so surprised when I heard that this game was coming out! After years of waiting for a sequel to the fantastic "The Lost Crown" I was very happy to return to Saxton, all its familiar inhabitants and its spooky atmosphere. Of course, this being a short (it took me 4 hours to finish) Halloween special centered around a party in The Bear, the atmosphere is less creepy and much more humorous, but that was quite enjoyable. Nigel has grown much more sarcastic since the last installment, and you get to see him drunk! ;-) The graphics and the voice acting have improved considerably since the Lost Crown and the controls are simple and straightforward. The only negative point is that you'll spend a lot of time pondering what to do next, with no clear direction or hints what to do, feeling like you've tried everything already. Some things seemed to hint at interesting puzzles but never went anywhere - I hope they will be resolved in the next full game. I still recommend Midnight Horror wholeheartedly to any fan of The Lost Crown who's been as eager to return to Saxton as I've been. Can't wait for Blackenrock!
not much sense. too short. world too small. (spoiler **** ) what is the point of the half done quiz. the rune mark in stove + the rune book = nothing to do.
I have just completed, a "special Halloween stream" of Midnight Horror. It was a lot of fun, as well as spooky! Compared to the last game (The Lost Crown), this takes place in a smaller area but has smoother animations with improved fluidity; the quality of models and textures are also better. The game is meant as a fun filler between The Lost Crown and upcoming Blackenrock, designed to be completed in just a few hours. The gameplay is a lot less serious too, and there are some funny moments: eggings, Nigel hanging around outside pub toilets trying to listen in on discussions about "legal highs", and a drunk bloke trying to chat up a skeleton. Sadly, to progress in the game sometimes requires the player to hit arbitrary triggers, e.g. looking at a family tree triggers someone to leave a room, Nigel needs to consume exactly the right amount of cheese and alcohol to make something important happen; so following a walkthrough is mandatory, unless you enjoy brute-force trying everything (with little or no hints) until something works. Final thoughts: it's not a well designed game, it's not a technical masterpiece, but there is something hilarious about playing a flatcap wearing, down-and-out, keptomaniac man who stinks of PROWL and insists ghosts are real. Play it with friends, you'll probably have a laugh. Can't wait for Blackenrock! If you'd like to get an idea of the game, my stream is archived here (jump to 3:08 to get to the action): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qATY5ZNUIIo
