The Last Birdling is a fantasy story visual novel with multiple endings and choices to be made, set in a different world (with a mixture of east-meets-west). The story is narrated through two main POVs (Tayo, a human girl expert in archery and Bimonia, a young bird-like hybrid entity of a species that has been at war with humans) and your choices affect the relationship between the characters and how the endings will play out. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll skip that bit but, well, yep, better come in prepared as some bits, while not directly graphical, do contain some ghastly bits. Of course for fans of something like the Higurashi series, it's probably tame. In that regard, it shares a similar feeling as Cursed Sight (another work of the same dev, which I also recommend checking out), in that the world is definitely a cruel place and there are no magic tricks that can change that. There is a constant sense of foreboding, that something's not quite right and, well, stuff happens. Anyway, being a visual novel you can imagine it runs fairly well even on a toaster and, well, that is the case. I used the Xbox One controller and Big Picture mode to play it and it was definitely a better experience thanks to that. The achievements are helpful to track your progress. There is also an extensive glossary that further helps with the world building and it may be good to give it a quick read before starting the game although you'll get prompts as you progress with glossary entries to check out. The overall presentation, music and sound effects are also well done and contribute to some of the more powerful moments. So, yes, very recommended indeed!

Its impossible for me to recommend this game enough. Its the best game I've ever played. Possibly the best story I've ever read/watched/seen, though it's hard to compare. It's worth every dollar and more, I have no complaint about anything the game offered. I read the glossary for basic info before playing (which was a good idea to understand the concepts), and then played through. I couldn't stop playing at any point. The characters are very well made, at no moment was I dissapointed in their choices or feeling something should be different in the plot. It was heart wrenching at moments as you progress, full of hope and longing as the story progresses, pleading internally that something will save the situation and not knowing how it will turn out; trying to read faster and faster to see how things will turn out, while not skipping a single detail or dialgoue because they're all so fitting and well suited for the story. Feeling the full joy in their happy moments and understanding their desire to be friends in a difficult world. The art and ways they used it were perfect and allowed you to add your visual imagination of the characters interacting, in a beneficial manner, while presenting all the necessary information on screen to give even the least imaginative viewer satisfaction. The music throughout was spot on, playing exactly what it should when it should. It never got repetitive or drawn out, it never departed from the narrative or felt out of place. It was a wonderful addition to understanding how the characters felt in each moment. Just hearing the menu screen soundtrack after playing through brings back such strong feeling and memory of the game, as if I wish it would never leave me. My first play through got ending 4; Yet to see the other four out of five total endings, but I felt very satisfied with the turns of events concluding this story. I immediately feel like playing through again, reading the entire story and skipping nothing, to test the other endings - but I'll give it some time, so that I can feel similar effect through my next play through. BUY THIS GAME! 12/10
The story is a bit too depressing, but I loved it, regardless. Poor Vi! She was my favorite.
The Last Birdling focuses on the unlikely friendship between girls of two different races that do not see eye to eye, from their childhoods to adulthood. The story is solid, albeit overall very depressing. There are a dozen or so different endings, the triggers of which can be known beforehand. Choices clearly show which trigger has been activated. That is a nice feature which is unfortunately uncommon in visual novels with lots of choices. Artwork is of good quality. Music is nice and fits well with the artwork and the story. No voice acting though. Overall, the game is well recommended, especially given its low price. Rating: 9/10.
Story of beautiful friendship.. or not, depends on your choices. Too bad there is no real branching plot, just different dialogues and endings. But still has great story and decent length. Beware though it's pretty depressing. 8/10 Vi is cute
This visual novel is a hidden gem. It tells the story of two little girls of different species trying to be friends in a world where their respective peoples hate one another, and their struggle to maintain their friendship as they grow up. It's heartwrenching and beautiful and one of the most emotionally resonant pieces of media I've ever consumed.
