Based on one of Germany’s most popular comedy franchises, this unhinged retro platformer turns a foreign cult phenomenon into one of the strangest licensed games you may ever play. Jump, punch and argue your way through 21 pixel-art levels. No context required — the confusion is part of the fun.

The game is based of the kangoroo chronicles by Marc-Uwe Kling, more specifically the second movie adaptation "Die Känguru-Verschwörung". If you don't know the movie or cannot understand German this game is probably nothing for you. The rest of this review is in German (just like the entirety of the game): "Die Känguru-Verschwörung" ist ein nettes kleines Spiel zum gleichnamigen Film aus dem Jahr 2022 und den Känguru Chroniken im allgemeinen. Vom Gameplay her gibt es hier nix wirklich besonderes.

The Kangaroo Conspiracy is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This particularly badly made platformer is from Germany, is badly translated from German, and is apparently a "meta" game about some crappy film or something... it's not great for gamers to have weird fringe fan-fictions nobody gets shoved at them on Steam, especially when they lack any real value as serious PC games. The game's story follows Marc-Uwe and the Kangaroo as they are sucked into a conspiracy and also, a computer game, where they must fight their way out while battling conspiracy theorists and their own meta-commentary. This is cringey and badly written, and is accompanied by weak puzzle platforming and a slew of technical defects we'll get into shortly. There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. The developers failed one of the most basic, fundamental requirements of game design.. "Show, don't tell." So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. We're here to play games, not read through hours of garbage intersituals. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. To make matters worse, while lazy, low quality pixel "art" has been used, making the game look bad, many elements of the game aren't done with pixelcrap... which accomplishes a couple of things. First, it shows the developers perhaps could have done better and they knew it, so that's a major screwup. Secondly, it destroys any hopes the developer had of creating a "retro aesthetic" as their excuse for the lazy pixelart compromise... It looks completely inauthentic from a retro gaming perspective. Visually, this is a hamfisted mess, a dogs breakfast of bad visuals, and this kind of laziness and poor quality should never be foisted on gamers. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Those technical issues put this game beneath what is expected from a contemporary, professionally developed PC game. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? The Kangaroo Conspiracy has the far too high price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. The quality problems and defects with this game makes the asking price totally unrealistic. It is impossible to recommend this to gamers here on Steam. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Rise of the Tomb Raider", "Wolfenstein - The New Order" or "Dead by Daylight". No pixelcrap is worth $10. If developers want to get paid the same kind of money as real game developers who know how to do graphics properly, they need to learn how to do graphics properly.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
The Kangaroo Conspiracy, developed and published by Tunermaxx Media GmbH, is a delightfully strange retro-styled platformer that wears its personality front and center, unapologetically embracing its origins as a tie-in to a very specific comedic universe. Rather than trying to broaden itself into a generic crowd-pleaser, the game commits to its offbeat premise with confidence, presenting a pixelated jump’n’run adventure that constantly breaks the fourth wall and leans into absurdity. From the outset, it’s clear that this is a project driven more by affection for its source material and tone than by a desire to chase modern trends. That decision immediately defines the experience: this is a game that wants you to laugh, nod along to its cynicism, and enjoy the ride as much as the mechanics. At its core, the gameplay is rooted in classic 2D platforming traditions. Movement is simple and responsive, focused on precise jumps, timing, and navigating compact levels that echo the sensibilities of older console and PC platformers. There’s very little mechanical clutter here, and that restraint works in the game’s favor. By keeping the controls and objectives straightforward, the developers allow the humor and narrative framing to take center stage. You’re rarely overwhelmed by systems or upgrades; instead, you’re encouraged to stay in the moment, absorb the jokes, and move forward at a steady pace. It’s a deliberately “small” game in structure, but one that understands exactly what it wants to be. What truly differentiates The Kangaroo Conspiracy from countless other retro-inspired platformers is how heavily it relies on dialogue, commentary, and comedic timing. The talking kangaroo is not just a mascot or background flavor—it’s the heart of the experience. Conversations, asides, and conspiratorial ramblings are woven directly into the flow of the game, often commenting on the action, the world, or even the medium itself. This creates a playful back-and-forth between player and game, where the platforming serves as a vehicle for jokes rather than the other way around. When the humor and level design align, the result feels cohesive and surprisingly charming, like a stand-up routine delivered through pixel art and jumps. That said, the game’s humor is also its most polarizing aspect. Much of its appeal is deeply tied to a specific style of German satire, political commentary, and cultural reference. While the game is fully playable in English, some jokes inevitably lose a bit of their bite or clarity in translation. For players unfamiliar with the broader Kangaroo universe, this can create moments where the intent is obvious but the punchline feels slightly muted. However, even when the exact reference doesn’t land, the sheer commitment to absurdity often carries the scene. There’s an earnestness to the way the game delivers its jokes that makes it enjoyable even when you’re only catching part of the subtext. Visually, the pixel art style reinforces the retro ambition without feeling lazy or unfinished. Characters are expressive, environments are cleanly readable, and animations do just enough to convey personality without overcomplicating the presentation. The soundtrack complements this approach, leaning into nostalgic chiptune-inspired melodies that keep energy levels up without becoming distracting. Together, the audiovisual elements support the game’s comedic tone, ensuring that nothing ever feels out of sync with its playful, self-aware attitude. As a complete package on Steam, The Kangaroo Conspiracy feels thoughtfully put together. Features like achievements and cloud saves are present, but they don’t overshadow the core experience. It’s very much a focused, single-player title meant to be enjoyed in shorter sessions, where its humor and pacing can shine without overstaying their welcome. Player reception reflects this clarity of purpose, with many appreciating that the game delivers exactly what it promises: a quirky, retro platformer infused with a strong comedic voice. In the end, The Kangaroo Conspiracy is best appreciated by players who value tone, character, and humor as much as mechanical depth. It doesn’t aim to reinvent platforming, nor does it try to compete with massive modern indie epics. Instead, it succeeds by committing fully to its identity, offering a compact but memorable experience that feels personal, weird, and refreshingly unfiltered. If you’re open to its style of comedy and enjoy classic jump’n’run gameplay wrapped in satire and meta commentary, it stands as a charming example of how niche ideas can thrive when executed with confidence. Rating: 8/10
Huui.
