[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Do you want an arcade cabinet straight from the 80s at home, but don't have the space nor the money to buy it? Emulating the classics with MAME is an option, but when you also want new content and a game made exclusively for your PC, then this game is as close as it gets. Everything in the game looks and plays like I remember it from my youth, the way the character moves, the endlessly attacking enemies, the merciless difficulty. Shadow Gangs doesn't take your hand to guide you through a relaxing gaming experience - you just die when you make a mistake. It is made to kill you, but at the same time to motivate you to insert another quarter. Ok, since you cannot insert more coins to continue, you are given a few more lifes to waste. Also the difficulty is not that high, after you have learned the basic moves (shoot, jump, duck) and the placement of the enemies even I can walk through the first few stages, at least until I encounter the first boss. He kills you within a few seconds as long as you don't know how to avoid his laser beam. There are bonus stages in the game and between the levels, but they are also like in the good old days... make a wrong move and they are over. A time limit, (hidden) bonus items, a cheesy story, boss fights... Shadow Dancer, Shinobi, Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja... if this rings a bell in your ears, you know what you'll get with Shadow Gangs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2080051839 Conclusion: INSERT COIN TO CONTINUE
Shadow Gangs is an excellent sidescroller. Currently singleplayer only but at least as good as double dragon. Game offers 10 levels with 6 very challenging bosses & Also a fantastic matching soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UByg1-YNhCg
Did you ever see the Movie Pixels? The 2 excited Boys that drove on their Bikes to a Arcade Hall and spend all their Money in these Addicting Playing Machines? Oh yes, i did it, too. I loved it, i spend so much money i just can`t remember how much. Thanks God the Homecomputer and Consoles came right in time to rescue my Wallett….. 2 Games of this Era were the Legendary REVENGE OF SHINOBI and the SHADOW DANCER. Timeless Masterpieces with an amazing Gameplay, Graphics and Sounds. And it has been very long since i saw Games like this. The only light for me was in 2014 when STRIDER came back. Until now. Welcome to SHADOW GANGS. The Moment the Developer gave me a Key to this Game was like early Christmas to me. So, at first, thank you very, very much dear Developer. After installing and starting my Eyes lighten up. A Typical Arcade Old School Intro. One big old school Picture of our Hero, scrolling from Down to Top while the Storytext Scrolls with the Picture, guided by typical Arcade Music. Oh my God i made a Timejump! I was so excited that i was trying to insert a coin into my Laptop. Thanks God it doesn`t have a CD Player…… Anyway, after calming down my Excitement i got my Controller and was ready to start. After choosing my character i started somewhwere in a City as a normal Guy in Jeans. And from now on it was a pure Time Journey. SHADOW GANGS has everything that an old School Arcade Game. A Sidescroller with wonderfull old school Graphics and of course Sounds and Musics. In the Beginning you have Shurikens and when a bad Guy comes near you, you automatically make close combat. Your Mission ist to reach the End of a Level and free all captived Ninjas on your Way. From Time to Time you get into Boss Fights. With the Help of Power Ups, you can upgrade your Jeans Guy into a Ninja. Funny fact, as the Jeans Guy you use Shurikens, as the Ninja a Machine Gun. Distorted World. Oh i forgot to mention the Story. You are Dan, a Ninja Master and have to rescue your Family from a bad, bad Crime Organization. Yep, thats all. Gaming Fun doesn`t always need to have a complex Story. That works also without it. Oh yes. Controlling Dan is also another Timejump. It feels EXACTLY like playing SHINOBI or SHADOW DANCER. I just felt like coming home and died fastly. .. No, the Game is not hard. It is a learning Thing. Easy to play AND easy to master, because most of your enemys have a fixed Place. Typical Cannonfodder Sidekicks running into the screen excluded. This goes also for the Boss Fights. At first, they seem hard, but if you learn their Movement, they are going to be easy, like the Bosses in the CONTRA Series. Also a big Bow from me for the Level Design. I love every Level and every Boss. Very variet. And another nice thing from the Arcade Era, Mini Games between the Levels. SHADOW GANGS is a 100% Hommage Blast and it is really, really amazing. You ever want to play like us ehm Old Guys? You want to know how challenging Games in the Arcade Era were, because sometimes there can be unfair moments, like when you get a hit and fly 3 Seconds immortal over the Screen. Pray, that there is no Bullett in your 3 Second Phase Way. If yes, you get another 3 Seconds Journey. No, not good. But that was the Arcade Era. Yes, dear Reader, this Achievements must be earned! So, if you want to make a Time Jump back or to the Golden Arcade Era, then this is absolutly for you. A very big thanks goes to the Dev for this amazing Pearl and a good friend of mine. We played this Game together through on her PC after i told her about this. She bought it and it was a great Time. Thanks. And thank YOU dear Reader, for reading.
《Shadow gangs》————
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2063052216
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2064194042
I feel bad writing this because I really appreciate the effort but...this is so old school that it hurts. All the annoyances from the 8-bit era are here. The only thing modern about this is the graphics. Everything else, from the stiff animation, clunky controls, annoying hit traps where one hit freezes your character causing you to likely get hit again, to the limited lives, deadly pits you have to jump over, and the endless, repetitive cycle of enemies that keep respawning hurts the game overall. It's everything you hated about the 8-bit age and, unfortunately, it's just not fun. I'm sorry, but this is just not worth it....
Shadow Gangs is a classic arcade fighting game with sharp and updated graphics that is 100x better than streets of Rage or Double Dragon. Tried the old sega genisis Streets of Rage yesterday and i was like wow this game Shadow Gangs is much better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=30&v=trZRfbp5CXo Pros: - Sharp HD graphic and hand drawn. Amazing!!! - Great 1980s soundtrack Music. - Spectacular backgrounds - Diverse enemies - Challenging - Leaderboards. Cons: - Those bosses are hard, maybe adding difficulty level would be much appreciated. Many thanks to the developer for letting me beta test.
Excellent side-scrolling action in the tradition of late 80's arcade games from companies like Sega and Data East! Shadow Gangs does a great job of replicating the look, feel and challenge of the games of that era, and with a wonderful presentation to boot. The visuals speak for themselves, but I was happy to discover that the game plays just as good as it looks; controls are tight and the combat feels really satisfying. Level designs and enemy types show an impressive amount of variety, with each of the game's levels set in a different locale, with completely unique art assets. Aside from visual variety, the level layouts themselves are more varied than I expected too! Some levels are far more vertical than others, some focus on perilous platforming, and others feature foreground/background switching similar to some of the Shinobi games. The enemy design is quite well done too, each enemy type has a distinct and predictable pattern, and none of them are usually much of a threat on their own - but if you allow them to gang up on you things get very hairy very quickly. The variety in level layouts and enemy attack patterns makes each level and even each enemy encounter a unique challenge, so the game never gets repetitive despite its simple mechanics. In other words: the game puts forth a simple set of mechanics, and through different level and enemy permutations it tests your skill and understanding of those mechanics - just like a good arcade game should. The pacing and length of the game feels just right, with each level (and boss fight) requiring a decent amount of trial and error to figure out, but once you do it feels really satisfying to blaze through them quickly! I've completed the game on the lowest difficulty setting (which the game wisely advises you to start with), and now I'm enjoying the challenge of trying to make my way through it on the higher difficulties. The game is quite approachable as far as diffiulty goes - people who aren't used to 80's arcade games will likely consider it very tough! But the easy difficulty setting provides a nice degree of leniency with some extra HP and lives, and with the Mission Select allowing you to start a new game from later levels, getting to the end is significantly easier than in most of the games that inspired this one. A 1-credit clear on the highest difficulty is a very serious challenge though, so there's definitely something here for seasoned arcade pros as well. I do have a few minor issues with the game, probably the biggest of which is the somewhat finicky behaviour of the camera. It's totally fine most of the time, but in some spots the camera is scripted to move up or down, which can obscure enemy attacks and lead to some unusually cheap deaths. The ability to manually scroll the camera up or down would be a very welcome addition! I was also annoyed a few times when the game let me advance through the level after having missed a few of the mandatory hostages, even getting checkpoints - forcing me to awkwardly backtrack. I don't mind having to rescue the hostages to clear the levels, but with a few of the more open levels it can be needlessly easy to miss places you have to go. Finally, some of the difficulty tuning also seems a little off, with some early bosses seeming more difficult than the later ones. All in all though, the few complaints I have with the game are very minor, and I had a ton of fun with it from start to finish! As a long time arcade game enthusiast it's awesome to see new games come out that embrace this style of game design, especially when done this well. If you're a fan of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Rolling Thunder, or any games of their ilk, I would definitely recommend checking out Shadow Gangs.
Not gonna lie, I was hoping for something more like Shinobi 3 instead of OG shinobi lol. But this game is still solid.
