If this was a project coded by a high school's "learn to code" class, I'd praise it for being an inspiring start to a career in game design. But it's not; the developer barfed out this incoherent mess of bugs and sold it for money. As such, I'm going to rip it a new one. First and foremost is the story, or lack thereof. Build things on your island, get money, use it to build more things. Eventually, money stops being a concern and you can build however you like. If it was just a sandbox game, I'd be fine with that. "Animal Crossing But It Costs $5" is an okay pitch. Sandbox games don't lock content behind arbitrary achievements in the hope of keeping you engaged. This game tries to be a sandbox game and an idle game while accomplishing neither and frustrating both. Second is the bugs. There are a lot, but just off the top of my head, I can remember 1. animals don't count toward island food production unless they actually appear on the map despite you buying them, 2. things labelled "trees" aren't trees for the purposes of in-game achievements, 3. wooden paths don't merge and connect into a continuous aesthetic flow, and 4. sometimes money just stops coming in or going out. A central mechanic of progress just stops happening. I really tried to get into this game. The music is charming and I like low-stress managers. This should be a home run at discount pricing, but it's not. It's an incomplete mess that belongs on page 81 of Kongregate, getting 4 plays a month. I wasted 3 hours trying to find a real nugget of fun. It's there... for maybe 45 minutes. Don't waste your time or money.
I didn't mind the first game in this franchise. It was pretty basic, but an enjoyable way to pass a few hours. This one just felt like a poorly paced and unnecessarily long idle game. Go play the first one if you haven't before, but give this one a pass.
the game is very directionless, uninspired, and mildly unintuitive. there is very little information provided to you and the bit that is is confined as a short tutorial at the start of each game (if enabled). its identity is lost somewhere between a sandbox city builder and an idle game with the mix ultimately leaving me feeling very unsatisfied.
It's a nice refinement on The Islander by removing the tedious collecting mechanics from the first game. That said, I really like a little more interdependencies or supply chain-type problems in my city builders, and this is a lot more free-form. Create a building, immediately get the resource, wait for the timer to go so you can have enough money to repeat and unlock the next tier. It's... fine. There are no bonuses for placement or efficiencies to be had here. Your inhabitants kind of wander aimlessly and do whatever. The numbers do go up, though.
Tentatively I would recommend. If you can get it on sale for like 90% off. Firstly, It suffers from a lack of design options and no way to import your own. Secondly, I get frustrated by the day/night cycle. I'll be in the middle of a design for my island and it turns night and on my monitor that means I can't see anything that is not lit with the in game lighting options, and I was unable to find any way to stop time so I could complete my design without the night interrupting me. Third, the island cannot be expanded, so space is severely limited. And finally, a couple of the achievements are tricky because they only count sometimes. I was only able to get them be deleting my saves, which should not be a thing. Seriously. You cannot lose this game. The only thing to do in it is collect money and design your island. Really the only reason to purchase this game is that the achievements in it are stupid easy to get(if you can work around the wonkyness of getting them). Once you collect them all, there really is no reason to play unless you like designing small villages with limited assets.
This is a cute and relaxing game for passing time or unwinding, No story or real gameplay outside of building stuff but it's still enjoyable!
Cute, simple, effortless - The Islander: Town Architect offers mindless, simple joy without much in the way of challenge. If you need a break from whatever action RPG, strategy, shooter or other genre of game is really giving you a run for your money, or you just don't have the brain cells to play something challenging, this game will let you play a game that is just simple fun without making you work hard at all. It is a little shallow with what is available at a fully leveled town, but I am hoping that while the game has been fully released that they will continue to add more options. 7.5 / 10
a relaxing town builder for people who enjoy creating. you unlock things as you go along so it feels rewarding without the stress of time constraints or a points system and things other games have.
