This game is very near and dear to my heart. I love it, I've spent over a thousand hours on it. It's a great space based mmo that revolves around guilds called corps and involves "guild based" combat, but unlike other large mmos, the developer has artificially allowed a certain favored corp to monopolize power and terrorize players and other corps alike. The dev also overlooks their rampant toxicity that literally drives people to quit the game. It's been like this for far too long and I fear if it continues, not much of the game will be left in the future. While the game itself is amazing, I cannot recommend it at this time due to current in game status quo and the dev's seeming inability to address imbalances, as well as specifically catering to a player group's demands, both in game and in the official discord server.
Moderation is terrible, getting physical and doxxing threats from players, then getting kicked from their official discord for responding to the threats while the person making the threats get no reprecussions, was told to report to discord and them, then told my response was trolling the person making the threats and thats why i was banned, refused to answer if it was against terms of service to make physical and doxxing threats, and told me sarcastically to call the police if i feel unsafe. Do not recommend spending any money on in game currency, if the mods wont moderate the threats to the community and banning people for speaking out against it. that is all.
Recommendation FOR the game at the end.
Found this game via a google ad while watching you tube on my phone. Began playing and found there was a PC version... was dissatisfied to find that it was free on the phone but costed on PC. When I searched for it via google for PC it ONLY directed me to steam where I had to pay for it. While I was able to get it 80% off due to the steam space exploration fest I still had to pay for it. Upon logging in players told me that there IS a free PC version and the steam version just gives you 7 days of experience bonus and a couple cosmetics.... so 7USD for 7 days of exp bonus and a couple cosmetics in a game where graphics barely matter. There is nae free choice on steam to play it and forego the bonuses or to get them later after deciding if you like the game. And given the length of time it takes to really play the game you WILL pass the 2 hour mark forbidding a refund before you can really get into the game. Despite dev rules I logged in and found the main chat to be very toxic and filled with all kinds of obscenities and vulgarities and had trouble finding a way to mute the main universe chat. I was then invited to a corporation(player group) and the leader of this group immediately began asking for sexy voice chat. After refusing/ignoring the requests many times and having mentioned i had a bad day he proceeded to be offensive and then kick me from the corporation for refusing to voice chat with him. This tells me he just wanted sex chat and has likely chased off many other players who were new to the game. He then went into the main chat to tell others I am a bad person so as to exile me from other groups. Multiple others went along with his comments and made more sexist and vulgar comments and even insulted the dev himself saying he buys mailing lists from mental facilities in order to find new players. This is apparently the community you can expect when playing this game. ------------------------------------------------------
Actual game play Pros and Cons:

Pros:
The game is generally relaxing and not inherently difficult but does have moments of adrenaline when hoping you will win a fight. The progression is generally steady albeit slow and the UI does have a learning curve and is poorly laid out BUT does give you a lot of options to customize your ships and gain materials, research and funds. There appears to be a lot of future content that would become available as I got stronger that was not immediately visible when i started playing.
Cons:
a very slow game where it can take several minutes to cover distance unless you use quick jump costing "tech points" earned via actions and missions and achievements. Many of which are repeatedly but at a paced allowance. Alternatively you can spend real money to buy tech points which can directly equate to progress and power allowing big spenders to inherently be much stronger with greater ease. The pay to win is somewhat expected since it seems to be mainly a mobile game and that's the model for the dev to make money since the mobile version does not have ads. Obviously as above a very toxic community. I am currently waiting for a reply from the dev to screenshots of this behavior and if addressed will modify this review to include how it was addressed. My hope is the developer handles it and makes efforts to clean it up and make it more welcoming to all players of all genders and ages. -----------------------------------------
Final recommendations.
NO primarily because of the toxic environment that only wants specific kinds of players who will fit in or do as the other players demand. However the game play it's self can be addictive and relaxing at the same time. If the toxicity is addressed then my overall recommendation would be a YES....
There’s honestly better mmo’s that respect everyone’s time. It’s way too grindy and toxic. Like wayyy too toxic of a community. Dont expect to enjoy the game till you get way later into it when you can do the bare minimum to try PvP, which then you’ll get instantly targeted by players because you are an easy resource to them. I tried to give this game a fair bit of my time, instead I just feel like I wasted my time. The new team working on the game doesn’t seem to grasp anything other than making a new resource sink for money and the community manager is piss poor at listening to the community. It’s best to take your time and money elsewhere, that’s what the original solo dev is trying to do.
The Infinite Black 2 is an indie game, by an indie developer. Do not expect an AAA space MMO. This is one of those cult games that has a small player base, but a hugely tight-knit community of players. The game will not hold your hand, as progression is slow and levels are earned, but as mentioned above, a hugely helpful community will help you grow, engage and learn with ease. At it's heart, this game is a PVE and PVP fleet game, in which the corporation and alliance with the strongest fleets win. Do you want to build an armada of huge Emperor class ships and lay waste to planets, space stations and enemy fleets, or do you want to build a small agile fleet of cruisers and win glory in the Arena? Your journey will be hard, you will have many losses, but if you can rise above the rest, you will gain fame, glory and sit atop a mountain of skulls. That's the attraction of the game when you join TIB2. It might take a few months of active play, but with a community who will soon become friends, you will have many allies and hopefully just as many enemies to destroy along the way. Good luck Commander.
Nice space exploration & fighting game with a nice player community and a very active developer, who is present in the game talking to the community. If you like lots of ships to choose from and slapping lots of different guns, shields, drones onto them, this is a very nice game to pick up. May seem grindy, but become member of a corporation and you will receive a lot of help from your mates! I play on Steam and on my phone, works perfectly.
Looks interesting and worth a try if you like strategic PVP games. but it does not hold your hand like AAA slop might. I played back in 2011 during the early days of TIB back when Terra and Murder Inc were at war or something. Whalesong games or something owned it? I cant remember. This is definitely a step up but damn do I miss the legacy version of 2011 was just peak.
Game is serviceable, enjoyable if you played the first. But I can't justify recommending this game with Ozy developing the game the way he is. Can't take criticism (Deleted messages multiple times in his public discord and even entire channels when he doesn't like the questions he's being asked), focusing development efforts on strange projects no one wants and playing favorites with members of the game community.
Many $ players get to cheat bot and do not get any type of punishment for cheating. This encourages more people to cheat to stay competitive.
The game is just overwelming with how much you need to learn, then the changes being made are always game changing, even new items make the old items USELESS, Additionally, take pauses for times, come back and just get slaughtered everytime, just is not worth coming back and getting slaughtered without putting 100+ hrs to get "good" again.
