Reviews
Since there were no reviews, I gave it a shot. It works out of the box with a xbox controller but you may want to tweak the controls to your liking. It reminds me of the old microsoft combat simulator. I have an old logitech 3d pro that I want to try with it too. Do not see why it would not work.
Nostalgic early 00'S flight sim at its finest. I love everything about this game and have since it came out over 20 years ago. Similar to Sturmovik, but simpler and smoother flight mechanics, at this price you gotta give it a chance
I really wanted to love this game as a trip down memory lane. However the lack of joystick support makes it unplayable. Game also crashed within the first 5 minutes. :( Please take a little more effort MicroProse. You were better than this back in the day.
Kinda reminds me of Red Baron 3D but with a WW2 setting. similar campaign options focused around the Battle of Britain with an Axis or Allies campaign featuring a lot of kit. I think it's closer to an arcade game than a simulation game but it's still good fun. It works with modern Joysticks if you enable them in your Game Controllers settings (if windows user). My T.Flight Hotas4 works just fine with this with no fiddling needed. For its price I'd say it's fun.
The History Channel: Battle of Britain – World War II 1940 delivers a classic style of aerial combat experience that focuses on accessible dogfighting and historical atmosphere rather than hardcore simulation complexity. Developed by iEntertainment and published by MicroProse Software, the game revisits one of the most significant air campaigns of World War II, placing players directly into the conflict between the Royal Air Force and the German Luftwaffe. Instead of attempting to become an ultra-realistic simulator filled with intimidating controls and technical systems, the game embraces a more approachable design philosophy that prioritizes action, cinematic battles, and historical presentation. From the beginning, the game succeeds at creating the feeling of participating in wartime aerial operations. Flying over the English countryside while enemy bombers fill the skies creates an exciting sense of scale, especially during large dogfight encounters where fighter planes weave through clouds and tracer fire lights up the battlefield. The game may not feature cutting-edge graphics, but the visual style still captures the atmosphere of World War II aviation effectively enough to immerse players in its setting. Aircraft models are recognizable and detailed enough for history enthusiasts to appreciate, while explosions and smoke effects add energy to combat encounters. One of the game’s most appealing qualities is how accessible it feels compared to more demanding flight simulators. The controls are designed to allow players to quickly jump into the action without needing extensive knowledge of aviation systems. Aircraft handling feels responsive, and the gameplay emphasizes exciting aerial combat over realism-heavy procedures. For players unfamiliar with the flight combat genre, this makes the experience significantly easier to enjoy. At the same time, the game includes optional settings that add more simulation-style mechanics for those who want a slightly deeper challenge. This balance between arcade gameplay and light simulation gives the title broader appeal than many niche aviation games. The campaign mode adds historical flavor through mission briefings and scenarios inspired by real wartime events. Escort missions, bomber interceptions, and large-scale dogfights recreate the pressure and intensity of the Battle of Britain in a way that feels entertaining even if it is simplified. The inclusion of famous aircraft such as the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Messerschmitt Bf 109 helps strengthen the historical immersion, especially for players who enjoy military aviation history. The History Channel branding also gives the game a documentary-inspired identity that separates it from more generic arcade flight shooters. Combat itself is enjoyable because of its fast pacing and straightforward structure. Battles rarely become overly technical, allowing players to focus on chasing enemies through the skies, lining up shots, and avoiding incoming fire. The game creates several thrilling moments during close-range dogfights where aircraft narrowly avoid collisions while machine guns tear through the air. These encounters capture the excitement of classic airborne combat games and give the title an old-school charm that many modern simulators no longer emphasize. Despite its strengths, the game also suffers from noticeable limitations. The visuals, while atmospheric, show clear signs of age and budget restrictions. Terrain detail can appear repetitive, textures are fairly basic, and some environmental areas feel empty. Character animations and interface design also lack the polish expected from modern releases. While none of these issues completely ruin the experience, they do prevent the game from feeling fully immersive compared to more advanced flight combat titles. The artificial intelligence is another inconsistent aspect of the experience. Enemy pilots sometimes behave unpredictably or rely on repetitive attack patterns that reduce the tactical depth of dogfights. Missions can occasionally feel too easy for experienced players, especially those familiar with more realistic aerial combat games. The mission structure itself also becomes somewhat repetitive over time, as many objectives revolve around similar tasks such as intercepting bombers or eliminating enemy squadrons. Players who are not deeply interested in aviation combat may eventually feel the gameplay loop growing repetitive after extended sessions. Even with these flaws, the game benefits from strong sound design that enhances the atmosphere considerably. Engine roars, gunfire, and radio chatter contribute to the sense of participating in active wartime operations. The soundtrack supports the historical tone effectively without becoming distracting, helping maintain tension during battles and quieter moments alike. Audio plays an important role in making combat encounters feel more dramatic than the visuals alone might suggest. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of The History Channel: Battle of Britain – World War II 1940 is its nostalgic spirit. The game feels like a throwback to older PC combat flight titles that focused on accessible action and historical excitement instead of overwhelming realism. For players who miss that style of game design, this title offers a refreshing experience that values immediate fun over technical accuracy. It may not compete with modern simulators in terms of realism or production quality, but it succeeds in delivering entertaining World War II dogfights with a strong historical atmosphere. Players searching for a serious military simulation filled with detailed cockpit management and highly advanced physics may find the experience too simplistic. However, for those who simply want to climb into a Spitfire, engage enemy fighters, and relive one of history’s most famous air battles, the game provides plenty of enjoyable moments. Its accessible gameplay, recognizable historical setting, and classic arcade-inspired structure make it a worthwhile choice for casual aviation fans and players looking for a more relaxed flight combat experience. Tried to run it multiple times, system specs should be compatible, but despite verifying files and even restarting steam, game only shows a black screen with the mouse icon set in it's loading ring status. Task manager even stated the application was not responding, and application could only quit out when forcefully ended via task manager, not even an Alt-F4 could quit the application.
