It's an alright game it's genuinely priced as what it's worth. The movement is very janky, the loading screens for digging up and putting away graves makes you sleepy. It's worth buying if you're new to horror type sims, and if you've got a tight wallet. As far as game play goes the crucifixes are my favorite part - having them placed makes it easy to manage. There's roughly no story line or plot. It'd be better if there were more store purchasing/boost options, the grave digging lacks depth - it gets repetitive since there's a 3 limit cap that will force you to end the night. The jump scares are ok, although seeing that stationary flesh suit gets to be annoying more than scary. Other than that it's a fine past time if you're bored and want to support smaller games. Has potential but it's very cut and dry.
Very "On The Rails" feeling, even when you do everything right you get a sudden conclusion, Good concept with poorly executed plot devices.
You can shart your pants
Sadly this game didn't quite deliver what I wanted from it, but that could very well be an expectation thing. I was expecting more of a graveyard simulator type experience, but really the graveyard setting is kind of glossed over. For instance, the game is called The Gravedigger, yet you don't dig graves. You approach graves, then the screen cuts to black while you hear sounds of a shovel, then magically the coffin is visible in the dirt. Thrillingly, you then click on the coffin and there's another cut to black, and then the coffin appears on the ground beside you so can slowly roll it into the church. If I may be hyperbolic, it would be like if, i dunno, Wave Race had you wait at the starting line, then it fades to black, and there are some engine noises while you imagine the waves being raced on. Let me dig a grave, yo, that's the name of the game! No I'm not *really* comparing this game to wave race, I'm comparing it to any other game out there that allows you to do the thing in the title of the game. There are just some strange choices (to me), like having to pay to move faster than a snail--like why don't you just make your game not miserable to play? But again, that doesn't make it a bad game, just not the game I was expecting. It's more about warding off a demon that tries to...i dunno... look at you funny. There are a few jumpscares which are effective if that's what you're into. I just wanted to dig a grave, but instead I faded to black and heard shovel noises. I guess there's an end to the game, too, but I just can't pretend to care enough to play it more. The rest of the gameplay loop is opening the casket, clicking on the valuables the corpse is wearing, putting the casket back in the dirt (more fades to black), placing crucifixes in various rooms around the church, and doing some online shopping. I probably dug up 10? 15? bodies and nothing really changed. I guess I'm looking for demon bones or something. Didn't care to try to find them all. If, by chance you read this review thinking, dang, I really just wanted to dig a grave--Unholy Priest lets you dig a grave, but it's also creepy and exorcisty, but primarily you can run a graveyard and keep the tombstones in shape and plant flowers and grant the dead their wishes. That game also doesn't really have a goal and is *absolutely* unfinished, so it's definitely not perfect, but I came off of that game to this game and I was pretty disappointed. Sorry, Dev, if this is upsetting, because I can tell you tried some things in this game, mostly related to story and atmosphere, but I just wanted to play a game where I was a gravedigger so that's why I bought a game called The Gravedigger.
I recommend getting a game with a discount, it has interesting ideas and a setting, but it also has the usual indie jank
It's so weird because I usually play these kinds of smaller indie horror through once and feeling done with them. This one though I keep coming back to even after a third run. I uninstalled it only to find myself reinstalling it again after a few days because it kept lingering in my mind asking to be played more... so now I'm doing a completionist run. It scratches some kind of weird itch...
Such a great horror game! Authogin has yet to disappoint me! The game was equal parts soothing and scary. The mechanics were easy to do and the random scares were fantastic, keeping the game fresh. I had the pleasure of playing the voice of the Demon in this game and it was an absolute honor to do so! Please pick it up if you want a unique horror experience!
I finally went back to beat this game after taking a couple months away, and I did find more enjoyment. At first, I felt too confused since there is little guidance on how the items work, and I was not looking to repeat the game over and over without understanding how some of the items work. Now that there are some guides out there, I educated myself and went in for a new run. I felt so much better and ready to challenge myself to beat the game and I did. I might go back to get the second ending but that'll be another time. As for my thoughts on the game: The jump scares are pretty good and I found myself being caught off guard from the randomness of the scares. Sounds are good and the plot is simple but makes sense in giving us an understanding of why we are digging up graves. The actual controls/movement of the game can be weird at some points, with the coffins getting stuck at intersections and jumping around my screen, and the very basic point-and-click mechanics to dig up graves and set them on the table. It's not a big deal to me but I would definitely like to see a smoother experience in the future. Great job by the dev
After a while the gameplay gets repetitive. The game could have been 10/10 if it introduced more stuff as days progressed. But instead you have to keep digging the graves and after a while you get used to the scary stuff. Still I really liked it.
