About

The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a lore-rich and choice-driven historical fantasy visual novel inspired by Irish mythology and Celtic folklore. Play as a tenant farmer from mid-19th century Ireland, whose path becomes inexplicably entwined in fairy affairs after getting robbed by the roadside and lured into the mythic and war-torn world of Tír na nÓg: A once unified land, now divided into the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Will you escape and return home with your stolen belongings? Or does fate have something else in mind?
While trapped in this strange and storied land, you meet six members of the Tuatha Dé Danann ("Tribe of the Goddess Danu"), split evenly between the rivalling Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Who will you trust, befriend — romance? In either case, you'd best be careful. Fairies are a capricious sort, and liable to pull you into their own agendas...

SHAE FÉARGLAS: An honourable Seelie soldier questing to find a lost princess. Voiced by Lev Rodriguez Shivers.

KEAGAN MÁISTIRÚIN: The Seelie Court spymaster with a plethora of enemies. Voiced by Will de Renzy-Martin.

AÍFE EALABHÀN: Queen of the Seelie, a rumoured usurper falsely ordained by the gods. Voiced by Méabh de Brún.

MAEVE TROIDUAIR: An Unseelie folk hero endowed with incredible power. Voiced by Blair Greene-Osako.

FLANNÁN MAC LUGH: The newly ascended Unseelie King, and son of the Unseelie’s infamous rebel leader, Lugaid. Voiced by Liv Smith.

ROBIN GOODFELLOW: The Unseelie's shapeshifting trickster of mysterious origins. Voiced by Alexander Hanly.
The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a Kickstarter-funded project currently in development. Due to the scope of the story, we will be releasing it serially over several years, discounted while in early access. The earlier it's bought, the cheaper it will be overall.
Not all routes are currently available! As of May 1, 2026, you can play Shae and Maeve's routes (both 70k+ words) and a side story starring Shae's sister, Brigid. If you're not sure about paying for early access, feel free to check out our free demo first. It consists of Vol. 1, Book of the Traveller (the pre-route content). We are currently working on Flannán and Aífe's routes!
The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) has a recommended reading order (Vol. 1, then 2, then 3, etc.), which will correspond to the release order of the routes.
Due to its setting, The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) will occasionally feature instances of characters speaking in Gaeilge, i.e. the Irish language. All instances of Gaeilge are linked to an internal translation tool, which is voiced by Nigel McKeon, a Gaeilgeoir.
The main character is yours to shape. At minimum, you must choose a nickname, pronouns, and one of three default appearances. Alternatively, if the default options are not to your taste, you can leave the sprite 'blank' or mod in your own artwork (instructions are included in the game's files). You may also choose to discard the True Name...
All routes, both current and upcoming, will have both romantic and platonic choice options. If you're uninterested in romance, you can make friends instead! No matter the nature of your relationship, you will still be able to reach the good end. Or the bad one.
Our cast consists of two men, two women, and two non-binary characters. All are romancable no matter the MC, but some characters are asexual or on the aromantic spectrum, which may impact aspects of their romances.
There are secrets to be found in this game, with more yet to come. Prepare yourself for a lot of horse related shenanigans. 🐎

Dive into this lore-rich VN inspired by Irish and Celtic myths in The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe). Meet the rival factions of the Seelie and the Unseelie Courts, while trying not to get intertwined in their ongoing trifles. Find friendship and maybe romance along the way. This novel currently is in early access with only some routes complete. The full game plans on having 8 volumes in total and will be in early access for multiple years. Currently the available content is as follows; Volume 1 - The book of the Traveller - consists of 8 chapters and is complete. It is more or less the prologue or the book that sets up the story and introduces you to a lot of the main characters. Volume 2 - Shae’s Story - Book of the Soldier - up to chapter 5 available. Volume 3 - Maeve’s Story - Book of the Warrior - up to chapter 5 available. Your relationship status is based on your responses or choices. Once you make a choice one of three symbols will show up in the top left corner. Wings with a heart is romance. Wings with hands is friendship and Wings with a crown I am unsure of (might be approval points). If you are going for a particular route you can rewind the dialogue and choose another response before moving on.
Settings, Features & Gameplay
Settings & features include; Display options, audio controls, text options such as changing the color and outline colors of the text, dialog opacity and text speed. There are also some nice accessibility options such as tuning on or off timed choices, skip dialogue options, self-voicing on or off, visible post-choice indicator on or off, and quite a few more choices to tweak your experience. There are some experimental options as well such as multiple saves, auto backup on Chapter completion, and auto backup on quit. Extras include a world map, a glossary, and a gallery for the special moments you unlock during gameplay. Future extras that are in progress include side stories and achievements. * You cannot hide the hud currently for taking screen captures but hopefully one day they will add this feature. In-game settings include the ability to go forward or backwards in the story, quick save and quick load.
The Visuals & Audio
The music is instrumental and really adds to the atmosphere of the scene you're in. Dark and moody for the night and forest areas, mythical and magical in other parts with a Celtic vibe. Ambient sounds are also well done such as a horse neighing, the crunch of a disturbed brush or the bubbling of a stream. The wind, crickets chirping or a crackling fire. The characters all have some voice acting and all of them are excellent. Even some of the side characters will have a line or two (not just the main cast). I really enjoyed Keagan’s voice acting (Master of Secrets), Maeve’s and King Flannan’s. Visually the hand-drawn artwork, the attention to details that make every character unique are beautifully illustrated. The backgrounds are also hand crafted and painted and some scenes have animated parts to them like falling leaves. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3435466857 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3435440611
Overall Experience
I really love the world building and lore woven into the very fabric of this story right from the start. When reading you can see certain words in color, that if you hover over them, will give you a description of what they mean. Also in addition, in some parts of the novel, characters will speak in Gaeilge, which I really love. The story, what is available so far, is extremely well written. I loved a lot of the musical tracks too. The voice acting is top-notch across the board for all the characters. You can potentially romance Shae or Maeve at the moment but I am looking forward personally to King Flannan’s route once available. I do not make a habit of buying visual novels in early access unless they really draw me in with the artwork or the premise of the story. I’ve had this novel on my personal wishlist for a while and seeing it on a bit of a sale recently I decided to go ahead and dive in. I am very happy I did. The story is wonderful, I am really engaged in what is written so far and looking forward to what is to come. The story does not shy away from the hatred and pain wrapped up in the past events of the two factions, the violence done on both sides and the struggle of the current leaders to navigate the best path forward for each of their own peoples. There is potential for both friendships and romances. The romance angle is a slow burn at the moment. The stage is set for a couple of characters to romance eventually. For me I highly recommend this visual novel but being in early access for multiple years, that will be a deciding factor for many I am sure. However, if you want to be part of the process and don’t mind the wait, the experience so far is worth the read. 💚

This game was purchased by me for my personal library. On occasion I share my experiences with the groups I write for to help bring attention to games I’ve personally purchased and wish to give more exposure too. This game starts out very strong, with an enormous amount of storytelling and lore woven into it. The characters are intriguing and interesting, and their routes are unique yet woven together. I will be following this game very closely and I'm looking forward to what's to come.
i am bad at words (adhd) but here is a list why i love this game, even in the early stages (prepare for a messy gushing) - shae. - maeve. - maeve's cliffhanger made me gasp - shae's cliffhanger made me want to bite my pillow. that whole last scene is chef's kiss also - shae shae shae shae shae shae shae shae shae shae shae shae (i want to do an analysis on them) - darby is best girl - whoever chose the background music in the scenes... I LOVE YOU. they fit so well and they get me right in the feels - the whole thing feels like a movie and its so immersive --- it gives me brainrot istg - i really like how relatable the mc is and they are kind (i do not chose the 'mean' options lol) but also not a pushover at the same time. - the characters.... they are all so extremely detailed. i like how they are all based on tropes but at the same time, they have so many layers. even if you only see the surface — they are all likeable and you just KNOW they carry so many secrets and shades of themselves which makes it very fascinating - for example, now that the first part of shae's and maeve's routes are out, it really feels like their character started to bloom. I already really loved shae but playing these first five chapters just solidified this love. it gave me answers but has also given me so many questions about them and made me see the said layers even more. i obviously do not want to write spoilers here but i am sure whoever also played it can agree with me - i am also really into the plot of this whole Daonna thing and that it gives our MC a certain purpose and arch too (so many other games just make the MC exist and just to romance the characters but this way, they also feel like their own character which i really appreciate). i have theories but i am super confused at most of the time (in the good way lol) - character art: the sprites look so amazing. their expressions are 10/10 (esp the blushing ones) and the designs are detailed and pretty. makes me want to smooch all of them. robin looks super fluffy. - sounds: again, whoever chose the sounds. props to you. it might just be my overstimulated brain talking but the horse stepping noise (??) is so satisfying and clean, it scratches my brain. - other details: i love the falling leaves detail sm, it makes feel cozy. niche detail: but i like how robin's pronouns are randomized (??) i am not 100% sure they are but if yes, it is a nice detail. - overall plot: it is a simple but fascinating plot so far (which i am sure is about to get complicated) and i really appreciate the way certain words and phrases are highlighted so you can understand things from the get go and you do not need to open the glossary to understand things. overall: 10/10 game. i am really biased but i really do love it and i think this is my next comfort game. i am currently replaying it again. i really appreciate everyone who works on this game. i know it is still in the early stages but thank you for giving us such high quality and an interesting story. you have all my support!!!!!!!!!! ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
If the first half of Shae and Maeve's routes are any indication for the rest of the game, then I think we have a LOT to look forward to!!!
Highly recommended to anyone who likes well-thought-through dating simulation games. If you like romantasy, Irish history, mythology and folklore, then this is the game for you. The complex politics and drama of the Seelie/Unseelie courts and other actors in the Otherworld are riveting. One discovers quickly that there are no easy answers or solutions, that there are lots of grey areas and that the same events can be seen as completely different depending on the point of view. If you play all of the routes, you will get to explore multiple perspectives. All of the ROs (romantic option characters) are engaging and you get to choose pronouns for your MC (including "they/them"). There are also options if you prefer (queer-)platonic relationships or friendships instead of romantic relationships. All in all, this is a truly fantastic dating/friendship simulation game that I cannot get enough of.
This game starts off extremely strong, with a refreshing perspective and mixture of romance, friendship, and adventure. The attention to detail with their inspiration sources is second to none. Will be following this project most ardently. UPDATE: Nominated this game for the Steam Awards in the Narrative Category.
Kickstarter backer and proud of it! This VN is gorgeous, engaging, and so interesting. The story has already taken me completely by surprise and I am so excited for the rest of it to come, no matter how long it takes. Please support The Good People! You won't be disappointed!
I love it, I am SO excited for more. Shae is such a sweet pea. Robin is SUCH a brat. And I adore that it takes place in Tír na nÓg
This game has a unique vision and spares no expense to make it a reality. Its charming artstyle makes you feel like you're stepping straight into a storybook. There is a clear, deep, and passionate understanding of the game's sources of inspiration, and the story as a whole is all the better for it. Each narrative decision is made with intention and direction; the characters and lore of the game's world are complex, endearing and thought-provoking. A lot of heart was put into this game, and it shows. If you're looking for a unique, thoughtful, and heartfelt experience, this game is showing a lot of promise.
