The Ghost of Alcantra is a passion project made by four people. It is a free kinetic romance/mystery vn that alternates between two perspectives, one taking place in 1987 and one taking place in 1997. In 1987, Nick Fox meets the mysterious Alexandria (who seems to know more than she lets on) at the Summer Festival of Alcantra. They become closer, but at the same time, Alcantra finds itself the center for a series of murders. In 1997, an unknown narrator gets hit by a motorcycle and ends up in the hospital with amnesia. A detective, Scarlet Storm, informs him that a murder has just occurred and gives him a note found with his belongings that says: “Her blood is on your hands.” He joins Detective Storm to assist in the case in hopes that doing so will help him recover his memories. She tells him that the townspeople think the murder was done for The Ghost of Alcantra. As the events progress, it becomes clear that the events of 1997 are connected to those of 1987.
If you’re looking for a fairly lengthy visual novel focused around a central romance and mystery, consider The Ghost of Alcantra. There are many great visual novels that involve different routes or dating sim elements, but if you’re wanting to experience a narrative that emphasizes a singular, fleshed-out story, consider checking out The Ghost of Alcantra.
If you are looking for a great visual novel to read this is the one.
The Ghost of Alcantra 10/10 would recommend. A murder mystery which evolves into a romance. Easily one of the best stories I've read in a while. Between the music choices, scenery, and story I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. The story is an emotional roller coaster, but a good roller coaster. I can't remember the last time I've shed tears while reading a story. To the author: Thank you for bringing me along this ride. I hope you continue making master pieces like this.
The burgeoning love between the main characters in 1987 is really cute and that’s simply because they banter well. Nick’s a somewhat self depreciative but at the same time an understanding guy while Alexandria is a faux haughty intelligent but naive girl and they just interact really well, teasing each other, both dishing it out and taking it in equal measure and slowly coming to care for each other and it all just feels really natural. Being set in a small American town gives it a different flavour to the usual too. The whole 1997 plot is a bit on the nose. I feel like it’s going for a suspenseful mystery but I figured the crux of it pretty quickly (though maybe it’s me just having a very good idea from the setup rather than it being obvious in-text). Feels a bit like it’s just going through the motions when I’m not wondering what’s going on. On that matter the 1987 part hardly counts as a mystery either. I suppose what’s especially nice is instead of having a somewhat milquetoast denouement as I might have expected after the initial climax (if it wasn’t for the steam achievements being still half locked) it then goes on to actually have a second half really has something to say. Done badly it might have been corny but it’s self-aware yet still earnest and it’s executed well enough that it makes a really heartfelt story. It’s something that brings the VN up from a merely decent story to something genuinely memorable. The music is a bunch of the famous (and presumably free) classical piano/orchestral pieces and it’s a free indie thing so I can’t fault it using free music too much and it does mostly work fine but it makes the slice of life scenes feel overly dramatic/emotional . Classical composers like Bach and Chopin didn’t exactly make chill slice of life background music. It’s hardly a great plot/mystery by any means and it’s only got the production values one might expect of a free VN but it’s got one of the more natural boy and girl get closer to each other scenes I’ve seen in a while and it’s got a message at the heart of it that it feels unrelentingly sincerely about which counts for a lot.

SERBIA MENTIONED RAAAAAAGHGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! All jokes aside, it's fantastic. If you're like heavy reading. The prose and the themes it explores all come as a well deserved slap in the face to those stuck in life
Reading this VN as part of the Fall in Love Visual Novel Festival 2025. ❌ Tested on Steam Deck, it doesn't seem to run in the device as it gets permanently stucked in Steam loading screen (24/09/2025). Well written story about love, grief and moving on. I got really baited by the initial plot into thinking this would just be a murder mystery novel with some romance sprinkles but I didn't find the actual plot unpleasant at all. The story is beautifully told, the different perspectives complement each other really well and the pacing was quite accurate for my taste. Just give it a try, it's free.
The Ghost of Alcantra is a well written kinetic visual novel with beautiful art and an engaging storyline. Pros: I had not read a much that has kept my interest in a few months but I was pleasantly surprised. My personal method was to let the story play out and if I missed a section, go back and read it. The slow pace did mean that I was able to thoroughly enjoy the game's art. The art in this game was absolutely breathtaking. Each sprite is detailed in a way that shows the artist's love and dedication to their craft. (I love Storm! She's so pretty.) I would also say the writing itself is a pro. The author does spend time introducing characters, settings, and plot in a way that I feel is easy to understand and enjoy. I do not feel it was difficult to understand or follow. Most characters are quite likable and easy to connect with. There's a charming feeling when reading this that you only get from late nights in front of a fire with a warm drink and a really good story. Cons: I have no cons. It was genuinely enjoyable. Characters: The characters presented in this vn are well rounded and likable! Personally, the story started off a bit slow with introductions, but once everyone was established, I began to enjoy the story immensely. The characters are diverse and intricate. I have a favorite in Detective Storm! Design wise, I found no fault. Characters fit into their respective backgrounds well. There was an obvious style difference between sprite and bg, though it wasn't a bother. I did giggle a bit whenever Storm was in the car and looked a bit out of place.. But it was more charming than bothersome. The color schemes were soft and lovely. I don't believe there was a visually unattractive sprite (color wise). The art is really what struck me during the beginning and continued to attract me during the story. Storyline: While I had no issues following the storyline or plot, there were moments I did not feel engrossed in the story. But this was not the writer's fault, as the auto text speed did not flow well. I genuinely enjoy the writing style. It took a moment to get used to considering I feel introductions are often hard, but the writer did a very good job in keeping me engaged. There were sweet moments, shocking turns, and in depth thought processes. I did find that some moments, after large reveals or exciting scenes, felt lackluster. Again, I do blame this mostly on text speed. I enjoyed the pov switches, I had no issue following the story during these moments. The changing timeline moments were written well. And the backstories/settings were believable! While I enjoy a good plot, I do find a well written setting is what makes a story more compelling for me. I did enjoy both mystery and romance aspects. I did not find the murder/violent scenes to be too brutal. They were tactfully written. Overall the author did a great job in creating this story driven world and I had fun attempting to solve the mysteries I read about. Music/soundtrack: Absolutely stunning and enjoyable. It was a great addition that did add to the ambience. I genuinely have nothing negative to say as it was pretty and fit every scene well!! Rating: I rate on a 5 star scale. I would give The Ghost of Alcantra 5/5 stars and definitely recommend this to other readers who enjoy mystery/romance novels. I would recommend saving after long stretches just in case the reader would want to go back and reread passages with large reveals or if the reader would ever want to reread the story from the beginning. I'm very happy I took the time to sit down and enjoy The Ghost of Alcantra!
An outstanding visual novel. Plus it's free.
Drop everything you are doing and play this game now. Please, you will not regret it. Quite possibly my favourite story that I've ever read. I cried and I laughed and I cried some more. I'm not very good with words so I can't quite explain what I loved so much about this visual novel. I'll let the other reviews do that for me. Just play the game already, its free after all. It's simply an injustice that such a good story only has 25 reviews on steam and is completely free on top of that, so the least you can do for the creator is to play their work of love. I hope you all will love this game as much as I have and that it can help you as much as it has helped me. We are but stars in the boundless universe and stories are the bridges that connects us all. And this bridge, "the Ghost of Alcantra", might be the one closest to my heart. I hope that my love of games and stories will be as everlasting as the love story between our two delightful main characters. Have fun playing this masterpiece. :)
The Ghost of Alcantra Recommended Length: Medium (10-30 hours) Number of Routes: 1 Choices: No Character Rating: Good Story Progression: Good Music Rating: No Rating* Achievement Difficulty: 1 Additional Thoughts: A very good free visual novel where it alternates between two stories that are 10 years apart. Each of the stories follows a slightly different genre where the 1987 part is a mainly slice of life romance and the 1997 part of the story is a mystery. Does it work? Yes. Did i like one section over the other? Also yes. *music is a collection of classical themes that fit well in the scenes that they are used in.
Enjoying the story so far! I like how the 1987 and 1997 segments leads into each other~ The sprites look really good! Also...Detective Storm can ruin me <3
