Just finished The Door in the Basement. Pleasantly surprised at how well made this game is and how much content it has. Got it as part of a bundle, assumed it was going to be one of those micro horror games that lasts 20 maybe 30 minutes... but The Door in the Basement actually has a solid 2 hours worth of content. The semi-pixelated graphical style is great. The atmosphere is definitely creepy/unsettling and there are some good jump scares. It's mostly linear but there are a couple areas where you can explore a bit. There are some puzzle-ish segments as well as areas where you have to find keys/objects. You cannot attack, but some enemies can attack you (although I never died). Thankfully the game is generous with save points so you don't have to replay long segments if you need to stop playing (you have to find a save room though). The gameplay itself isn't really that engaging though to be honest. It's mostly just walking from creepy place to creepy place, sometimes running, sometimes finding the occasional key or object or solving a minor puzzle. It's more than a walking simulator... but not by much. Still, if you're looking for a creepy indie game to spend a couple hours in, The Door in the Basement is a very solid choice... especially if you can get it on sale for $5 or less. Rating: 7.5 out of 10.

A wild ride that creates a fantastic atmospheric experience! This game has good pacing. The devs do a good job of driving the player forward and making them feel tension. The jump-scares are earned rather than over-utilized. The game is rich in story, especially throughout the environment, and how things subtly change. Visuals and audio are constantly unnerving and built up paranoia well. The game is highly impressive for a two person team! Pretty simple game with an interesting story. Vague enough to build intrigue over the course of the game, but concrete enough that you aren't left with any questions. The sound design was pretty decent and elevates the game. The art style is consistent and interesting enough, retro throwback. Music is light at best. Very short, so I would only recommend picking it up on sale. There's really not enough there to justify $11, but I got it at half price and it was worth it there. There's not a ton of replayability and nothing terribly unique about the gameplay, but it's a fun enough story and it's competently made. There's a few jumpscare moments and plenty of unsettling tension throughout.
