Spot the tail. Yes, that counts as a cat.
The Cats of Monte Cristo follows the story of the Count of Monte Cristo across 10 small levels, each hiding 15 to 25 cats and 5 collectibles, for a grand total of 250 cats and 50 shiny extras. On paper, those numbers look impressive. In practice, I reached 100% in about 12 minutes, and that includes wrestling with a few buggy moments. It’s a fun way to revisit a classic, and I’ll admit I’m biased because I love this story. The cats are cute, even when they’re... often just butts and tails. Hints are quick, unlimited and rechargeable, and they don’t affect achievements, though they basically hand you the exact answer instantly. Achievements follow normal completion and aren’t as cluttered as similar titles, even if 25 still feels like a lot for something this short and easy. The big issue is the lack of zoom. None. Combined with flashy backgrounds and no brightness or dark mode option, it can be rough on the eyes. All cats are visible right away, so difficulty is almost nonexistent, and there’s no real challenge to stretch those 250 felines across time. But the most frustrating part is when I entered the main menu for the first time, my mouse went completely wild, moving in spasms and making clicks a battle, even after rebooting the whole thing. That latency, though less intense, still shows up in levels after clicking a cat, interrupting the flow constantly. For a 12 minute experience at this price, paired with bugs and limited QoL options, it’s hard to justify. I’d love to see more literature classics adapted into hidden cat games because the concept is fun, especially for fans who already know the story. But as it stands, it’s more of a quick curiosity than something you’d truly miss if you skip. This is a very short but fun HOG with a colour pallette that seems all too familiar since some other HOG developers use something similar. We have two different levels - each divided up into five sections (as in 5 screens). Scrolling is not possible so it is pretty easy to find everything. Unfortunately, zooming is a non-existent function which would be useful for those scenes with a bigger crowd. It's an all right game. Many compare it to other developers that are more consistent with their releases that offer a much longer gameplay experience. For this price I would say this is absolutely fine. I also find the literature part a nice touch. Recommended but don't expect something longer than 20 minutes.
I LIKED THE EXTRA COLLECTIBLES BUT A BIT TOO EASY This is a quick way to earn 25 Achievements because the cats and additional collectibles are very easy to spot ...and yes, some of the cats are just kitty butts. 😼 I did, however, like some of the features and would like to see another game by this developer with perhaps a bit more of a challenge, such as cats hidden inside objects, or some of those amazing Easter eggs available in previous HO games by this developer. (see bottom paragraph) There are 2 chapters with 100 cats in each chapter, spread across 5 different scenes. Each of the five scenes has a different "collectible" to find as well. There are Letters, Rings, Red Roses, Keys, Diamonds, Masks, Wallets (coin purse), Daggers, Vials, and White Roses to collect. It doesn't have a zoom feature, but I felt that the scenes were large enough to see all the cats clearly. It includes a Hint feature that isn't tied to earning achievements, as well as a "kitty counter" and tab to track collectibles. There's no "scene cleared" indicator or specified number of cats available in each of the five scenes, but the not knowing aspect adds somewhat of a challenge to the hunt. The Cats of Monte Cristo is by Snkl Studio, the same developer who brought us the adorable games Hidden Corgi Mansion and Hidden Wings and Paws, which were both fantastic games. It would be nice to see another game with those fun Easter Eggs that were offered in the above two games!
If you played Tower of Cats, you know what is coming....except this is not fleshed out at all. I got it on sale for $1.49 and still feel like 100% in 30 minutes (and a distracted 30 minutes) isn't worth any price. There should be more chapters to this game.
Nice little hidden cat game. Nothing fancy but original artwork. Got 8min out of it (with a few hints) but then again it isn't so pricey. A small recommendation, but a recommendation nontheless.
Nice but very very short
