About
The contract has you lined up for 10 days driving the Black Rails, make sure the goods arrive. Callers can't resist the train's rumble.
The Black Route is an atmospheric low-poly horror game where you must look after a train from its front cabin, with the supernatural things that were once human seeking a way inside.
Manage the train's horn pressure and Medium to keep your cabin secure.
Open and move the cargo to protect yourself from Callers.
Check and apply the right codes to reset power for the cabin and carriages.
Ensure enough cargo survives the nights to achieve one of 3 endings.
You were happy working the Southern lines, you were until Sophie became afflicted. So you took up the only work that would pay for Affliction Treatment in such a short time. The Black Route ferry's supplies and weapons between settlements and cities separated by deep supernatural Medium hotspots, naturally the work is well compensated.
The pay should even cover a double treatment, should the route afflict those who traverse its rails.

This game is fairly short, but I really enjoyed it. At first I didn't really understand, but as the days crept on, its mechanical depth flourished. The amazing sound design accentuates a wonderful horror experience devoid of jumpscares. For this price, you really can't beat it, and I find it scarier than even some big budget horror games. It's short and sweet and doesn't overstay it's welcome as I feel anymore would have been stretching what the game has to offer. It's good.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ All I Wanted Was a Paycheck… Now the Train Is Haunted 🚂👁️ The Black Route immediately throws you into that “something is very wrong and it’s probably watching me” kind of vibe 😬 From the jump, there’s this constant ominous presence lurking around, not jump scare heavy, but the slow burn “yeah I don’t like this” feeling that never really leaves. You take on this dangerous job running a train because you need the money to help your family survive 🧑🧑🧒🧒 And honestly? That alone makes you instantly root for the main character. Dude isn’t chasing glory, fame, or clout, he’s just trying to keep his family alive. Absolute underdog energy right out the gate. Respect. The sound design and music deserve a shoutout 🎧🚨 Throughout the game, there’s this rhythmic, pulsing music that never fully relaxes, it just sits there in the background with an uncanny, unsettling feel, like it knows something you don’t. It perfectly feeds into the tension, making even the quiet moments feel suspicious. The kind of music that makes you stop, listen, and go, “yeah… something bad is about to happen.” Aesthetically, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this game reminded me of Iron Lung, and I don’t even fully know why. It’s the isolation. The claustrophobic environment. The eerie silence mixed with mechanical responsibilities. You’re stuck doing your job while something supernatural is absolutely considering ruining your day 👁️🗨️. Gameplay-wise, this feels like trying to keep an old beater car alive while every dashboard warning light is on and you’re telling yourself “it’s fine, I can make it another mile” 💀💀💀 You’re constantly maintaining systems, managing cargo, checking codes, keeping power flowing, and praying nothing crawls inside while you’re busy flipping switches 😭 If you love trains, this eerie setting will absolutely hook you. If you don’t love trains… congratulations, you might after this. The horn pressure mechanic deserves a special mention 🚨 It genuinely reminded me of winding the music box in FNAF 2.... that same stress where it’s slowly creeping toward a breaking point and you’re like “okay okay OKAY calm down” while resetting it before everything goes to hell. Simple mechanic, but it works insanely well and keeps you on edge. When things start going sideways, you actually get to defend the train using the cargo, which felt like Plants vs. Zombies but on a train 🚆🌱💀. You’re setting up certain cargo pieces to block, slow, or protect against incoming intruders, aka the “Callers”. It adds a surprisingly strategic layer where you’re scrambling to set things up while praying they don’t break through. What really makes The Black Route stand out is how unique it feels. This isn’t just another horror game with spooky noises and dark corners, it’s atmospheric, methodical, and constantly tense without being loud about it 🎧👻 ⏱️ The full experience clocks in at about 2 to 2.5 hours, which honestly felt like a solid length for this type of atmospheric horror. It doesn’t overstay its welcome… but now for the painful part. ⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️
After fighting through hours of dangerous shifts, supernatural nonsense, and holding this train together for the sake of his family… the main character just dies at the end.! No triumphant underdog win. No relief. No “it was all worth it.” I’ll be real, that ending genuinely pissed me off 😤. The game builds you up to believe you’re playing one hell of an underdog story, only to pull the rug out at the very end. It fits the bleak tone, sure..
That said, I still respect the commitment to bleak storytelling, even if I didn’t like the outcome...🤦♂️ Big shoutout to Just Matt, the creator behind this game 👏 You can tell there’s real thought and care put into the mechanics, atmosphere, and story setup. I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing what they do next if they keep making indie games like this, because this is a strong foundation. 🚂👻 Final thoughts: If you like slow-burn horror, eerie environments, trains, or being emotionally invested in a main character just trying to support his family while supernatural nonsense ruins his shift, this is absolutely worth your time.
About a half hour and a few levels in so far, awesome game. The rush to prioritize specific tasks is thrilling. This game will make you love the sound of a train horn more than you ever thought you would as a source of comfort on The Black Route. This game is really well made.
Awesome game! Great design, super engaging. Not knowing how everything worked at the beginning added to the feeling of unease, and figuring everything out was really rewarding. Excellent, atmospheric sound and art, too. Would highly recommend if you're into horror games with a puzzle feel. I was gripped the whole time.
I blew up too much cargo, now I can't go back 2 my wife RIP
such a cool atmosphere and vibe! i was fully commited to the train horn and i will happily go back to work some more on the Black Rails 👻
