It's almost 3 AM, dead time, with no teddy bear in sight. Is the house really this big? Or is it just the way the boogeyman's shadows creep through the halls... Teddy, where are you? Find out by playing The Bedtime Story.
«The Bedtime Story»
Introduction
For a game that’s the Steam debut of a one-man dev team, I’d say The Bedtime Story ticks all the right boxes in terms of what indie games should represent. Sure, there are over a dozen 3D survival horror games on Steam that make good use of stealth and/or flashlight mechanics, yet they all try (and some actually succeed) to bring something new to the table. The title I'm reviewing today, stands out from its numerous competitors.
Story
Judging from the player’s perspective, you step into the virtual shoes of a young child who wakes up in the middle of the night and discovers that his parents aren’t home. Creepy enough, right? Well it’s about to get worse, since you’re definitely not alone in the house. The Boogeyman is out to get you and you’re pretty much a defenseless target unless you make good use of stealth, quick reflexes and even your hearing skills. Boogey, as he’s being referred in-game through a crude drawing, wants to play a set of three “games” with you. His obvious intentions are that of a hunter who stalks his prey, but you have to comply if you wish to survive this nightly ordeal. The house you’re exploring either cautiously or while sprinting, may seem like a limited space comprised of rooms that are initially locked, yet you won’t have time to worry about it for long.
Graphics
Despite its closed nature, The Bedtime Story utilizes Unreal Engine 4 assets to its advantage in what I shall call as one of the most stable indie game experiences on this particular graphics engine. I was almost getting used to the constant crashes that seem far too frequent in UE4’s indie title usage. No CTDs to report in The Bedtime Story's case and no glitches either. I was able to run the game maxed out and at 4K resolution plus stable 60 frames per second. Ideal conditions which translate into an immersive gameplay (as much as it can, without Virtual Reality implementation).
Audio
Surprisingly, given its genre and price range, The Bedtime Story features audio feedback that is crucial to the player’s survival. The game itself recommends the use of headphones, not so much for the digital recreation of 5.1 or 7.1 surround, but for the simple reason that you need to listen very carefully to the in-game sounds without interference from external noise. You shall hear Boogey far sooner than you may observe his physical manifestation. Usually by the time you see him, it’s Game Over. So this is one horror title that makes excellent use of in-game sounds.
Gameplay
Short and sweet. Or bittersweet, perhaps. The game can be finished in about half an hour, theoretically. In practice, you will soon find out that sometimes luck also plays an important role in your survival. The Boogeyman has a random patrol pattern which means right from the start, that this won’t be a predictable gameplay. Even the batteries which offer your flashlight, its much needed power, are randomly scattered across the rooms and in drawers which change periodically from one playthrough to another. If you didn’t expect the game to be easy, you’ll still be shocked by how challenging it can get regardless of how cautious you may be. Sprinting will be your best bet at times since stealth will only get you so far. Boogey can spot you even in pitch darkness, so it won’t really matter if you switch the flashlight off, as soon as you hear him. Conversely, you can’t “blind” him with your flashlight or at least deter his attacks by staying close to other sources of light. You really have no option to fight back, but I’m not complaining about it. Survival horror is meant to be more about wits than brawn.
Verdict
Brief or not, you still get your money’s worth and such a creative developer deserves our full support. Especially so since Steam Greenlight shall become history soon. Lone devs will have a hard time reaching an audience on Steam, to say the least. Trading Cards will be added soon and I shall update the rating accordingly, once they arrive. If you’re a fan of horror games in general, you should definitely take The Bedtime Story for a spin right now or once it gets bundled. Just don’t look behind you and Boogey will go away.
Strong Points
+ Decently priced. + Steam Achievements. + Interesting use of in-game sounds. + Pleasant graphics and spooky atmosphere.
Weak Points
- Short and repetitive gameplay. - No Steam Trading Cards yet. - Quite difficult. A Bedtime Story is an unpolished and nondescript survival horror. It has been over 2-years since its original release date in February 27 of 2017, yet the game contains no update history and no related news about it. It seems developer Brandon Serowski has abandoned this game and decided to reap in a small cash grab of $2.99 every so often. Regardless, this game is plagued with an uninteresting story, poorly optimized procedurally generated items, and technical bugs and glitches. Serowski's A Bedtime Story features a simple story with no narrative behind it. You play a misfortunate little boy who awakens confused at 3:00AM because he cannot find his precious teddy bear. As he shakes his eyes to see where it must have fallen, he notices there is something written on his chalkboard. Let's play Tag. It seems an eerie spirit wants to play a game, and the in order to survive, we must stay in the light. Beyond this, there is no characterization, no lore behind the demon, no background story to the child, the house, or his family, and seemingly no motive. This game features a procedurally generated map and items, and zero save points. This means every time you start a new playthrough both the level design and the item spawns are randomnly generated. In theory, this would make for an exciting survival experience that featured an evolving landscape. However, the reality of A Bedtime Story is that it did not optimize this process, and as a result, certain items needed to progress the story can spawn behind closed doors or in restricted areas. The impact of these items spawning behind closed doors is that you have to restart the playthrough if you want to complete the game. It is unclear whether the settings to A Bedtime Story even work. First, after clicking on 'Settings' the game glitched and it went pitch dark. I heard a boy gasp after a few seconds and then it returned me to the 'Settings' screen. But second, there is no indication that a change in graphic occurs when I select either 'Poor' or 'Great.' It remains the same. Other bugs include the demon randomnly appearing and disappearing next to you and designated lamps and lights not turning on.
If you are searching for the thrill of being hunted as you collect certain items, you are better of with Slender Man: The Arrival, or Shadows 2: Perfidia. Even with its flaws, The Hat Man: Shadow Ward may also prove as a worthwhile alternative because it also features procedurally generated maps and items.
So you start off with some basic intructions. Then you are sent to play tag with whatever the hell creature the developers of this game created. You eventually reach a door with some girl crying (probably your daughter since you left her at the age of 2 months), and then you get this spooky jumpscare that tells you that the game crashed.
Scary game and fun to play. Starts out with some simple instructions and just let's you explore from there. I see others were having issues with crashing, but I haven't had a single crash. So it seems like those issues have been fixed. I would definitely recommend it.
Gives you literally no directions on how to play, running around the house spamming E everywhere....boring and crashed 3-4 times on me.
Decent atmosphere and scary. Definitley will have to replay to finish.
In The Bedtime Story, you play as a misfortunate kid who has awoke in the middle of the night and noticed that their teddy bear has gone missing; and that there is strange, eerie writing on the chalkboard in their bedroom. It seems as though some entity wishes to play a series of games with you, and if you complete them you are able to get your teddy back. If you lose, you are consumed by the darkness. The goal of the game here is to stay in the light at all times; whether by actually standing near a light source or by keeping your flashlight on. The flashlight does run out of power fairly quickly, though it's rechargeable so you never run out of batteries. Though you can find and use batteries to extend the life of the flashlight, and you can also pick up lamps to throw down when there's no available light source and you're out of battery juice. If you stay in the darkness for too long, a phantom ends up coming to eat your soul. Survive this ghost's three games, and you win. Each time you play through The Bedtime Story's short 20-30 minute campaign, the layout of the house changes. If you end up dying to the ghost, you have to start back from the very beginning of the game. You proceed through the mini-games by staying in the light and finding keys to open new doors. Unfortunately, the developer didn't have enough foresight to place appropriate spawn points for everything, since necessary keys can spawn behind locked doors and you can, in theory, be playing a run of the house that is unbeatable. The Bedtime Story is a mediocre choice if you're looking for one of those games that gives you the thrill of being hunted while you are, in turn, searching for particular items. The fact that the procedural generation is beyond broken is what truly keeps this title from being recommended; you can launch into a version of the house that is unwinnable since the developer didn't put a restriction on where the keys can be spawned, and that's absolutely no fun at all. It also launches in a small windowed screen that cannot be changed, with a default aspect ratio of 4:3. Despite this title launching in 2017, there have only been a couple of minor updates and no real developer support.
