The user manual includes instructions for how to build your own sound cable using electrical tape and alligator clips to connect your PC speaker to your stereo system. Dear lord I miss the 80s so much.
It took me 30 years to finish this game, enjoyed every year of it. The sound is minimal, but memorable - the pc speaker voices are remarkably clear. Interrogating suspects requires you to physically interact with physical pen and paper, there is simply no way you can remember the nav codes or exact spelling of all the names you'll chase down - by the time I finished the game I had a page of insane writing with arrows between names and numbers that is sure to have my FBI agent scratching his head for days. The flight simulator mechanic - piloting your speeder from one location to another - initially it is annoying and time consuming, the autopilot for example insists on taking you up 10000 feet before hitting the gas, however within no time I was manually piloting my speeder and thinking ahead about nearby nav points. By the end of the game you'll have pitch and bank control turned off and be flying like a madman. Be sure and lower the dosbox cpu cycles at a certain part otherwise the game is unfinishable - you'll never beat that robot.
I'm sorry but this 35+ year old game is literally unplayable in modern day.. There are retro games, then there are stone age retro games. Then there is this. From what I hear, the community is engrossed with this cult classic. From what I saw, this was supposed to be a detective/ adventure/ point & click game, but is mostly a driving simulator as most of your playtime (6-8 hours) will be driving around... Thankfully the 5th installment of Tex Murphy "The Overseer" is basically a remake. That is nice, at least we can experience the story in that upgraded version! I got here only because of the much acclaimed "Under a Killing Moon" and "The Pandora Directive", but I can't make myself sit through this relic, I'm sorry but no. I'd rather watch the 30 min retrospective by Space Quest Historian.
The story itself is pretty good, but the gameplay is just...not great for the most part. The game's detection is kind of spotty and the gun segments are garbage at best. It also takes a long time to get anywhere. But at the end of the day the story was interesting enough for me to play through it, so I still recommend it. Probably get it on sale, though.
Story wise, this game can still hold its ground. Gameplay wise, this game is ridiculously dated (as expected from such an old game). If you are willing to overlook the old graphics/gameplay and probably play with a guide, this is probably still worth playing. This is a game that spawned 5 more games in the series over time (though most are quite old).
Old but good.
Cool old DOS game for the first-half that doubles as a flying simulator. You actually have to pay attention in this one and learn which four-digit navigation codes matter and when to lock them in to your speeder. If you miss them, good luck finding out what they are unless you consult a guide. The second-half gets insanely hard. I did not have the patience to make it to the end: too often you will have to play a gun-battle scene where you have to constantly manage your ammunition and side-scroll to the right, while shooting an endless wave of goons, If you get ONCE it takes a massive chunk out of your life, and when you die (YOU WILL) you start the stage entirely from the beginning.
Great graphic adventure game. Way ahead of his time. After all, it's a game from 1989 that has an innovative sound technology called REALSOUND, that use the beeps of PC Speaker to produce digitized voices with great quality. The game has support for all videocards at the time, with the best option being the MCGA/VGA graphics. In opposition of the adventure games at the time, the game don't relies only on a 'parser' for writing commands, instead has a brand new and innovative interface that permits to interact with the game with the keyboard, without the need to write long and obscure commands. We only have to type the names of people or organizations when we ask someone for information. The plot of the game is very good and addictive. Tex's first adventure takes the player through the West Coast world of 2033, a setting that combines futuristic elements with film noir and "hardboiled" detective fiction styles. You must pilot a flight veicule, like a simulator, but you can rely entirely on the autopilot if you so desire. The game has various arcade action scenes, where you have to shoot some thugs, but you can choose the difficulty level for those at the start of the game. In my opinion this game scores 9/10, considering the date it was published.
