About

We heard you like games, so we made a game about a game! Terrain of Magical Expertise is a non-linear, story-driven RPG adventure, featuring an original turn-based combat system enhanced with various quicktime events. Your character is a player of a fictional MMORPG which rose to prominence during a (obviously just as fictional) global pandemic, which caused almost everybody to stay home and play games. The game is inspired by a popular animated webseries (but not to worry, you will enjoy playing it even if you have never watched it!) and features a full cast of voice actors, including talents from some of your favorite video games, YouTube channels, anime and cartoons, as well as charming animations and a huge world to explore, “TOME” packs 40+ hours of pure fun.

It's the year 2020, and a popular new MMORPG called "TOME" is hosting a special event with a huge cash prize. You take the role of a White-Hat Hacker, gifted a copy of TOME by a mysterious friend, who asks for a favor to try and take down some sinister Black-Hat Hackers, that are cheating to win the "Campaign of Champions" competition! Joining forces by chance with a guild of determined players called "The Dandy Alliance", you embark on a turn-based role-playing adventure to help your newfound friends achieve victory!

Customize your player-character with a variety of magical techniques, all executed via specialized quicktime-events!
A fully-voiced adventure, featuring 50 actors from some of your favorite video games, anime and cartoons!
Utilize hacker abilities to turn the tide against your cheating enemies...or cheat yourself, manipulating the game's rules!!
6 party member characters, each with unique skills that can combine together into "Team Attacks" that will devastate your foes!
25 stages to explore, with over 200 unique enemies to battle against in turn-based combat!
Branching narrative paths based on your decisions...as well as your victories and losses, resulting in multiple endings!
Inspired by a hit animated webseries “TOME: Terrain of Magical Expertise”

Played to completion it wasn't that good. Jokes were hit or miss final boss wasn't that interesting your MC isn't customizable at all(they even make a joke about it) but if they were not gonna give a way to fully customized the MC they should have at least let us change the color or something games alright just needed alot more polish
I won’t lie, it’s not easy to pick between recommend or not. This game is clearly a passion project about the story of TOME—and it does that job extremely well. The characters, story, plot… all of those are extremely well done. However, those are truly undercut by some frustrating game design choices that seem to be not very well thought through and, in my opinion, downright bad choices. Another review touched on this very well, so I’ll keep it brief: softlocks are common. Expect at least 1 in any given play stretch. Yes, I’ve lost lots of progress from this. Secondly, there’s no experience system—and this isn’t a BAD thing. I think it’s a neat idea, but it just does not agree with the way the game seems to be set up. Typical overworld battles become chores, to the point where even starting a battle then fleeing feels like a rather large time waste. Coupled with enemies that move erratically and some that straight up teleport in front of you—it could use some work. This part is just my personal opinion, but I think there are some abilities that are way too strong and the ability to use them takes the challenge out of combat — but if you DON’T, a lot of the time you just die to a map-wide attack. Some examples of these are Gamesoft’s Combat Disc, any attack that freezes//flowers, etc. [sidenote: The bosses can be VERY swingy. One fight you can freeze them all, the next they’re immune and critical against you. imo, make all bosses immune to flower and freeze.] Lastly, I want to rapid fire some ‘smaller, but important’ things: - Stat change dialogue boxes last too long. - Your character can visually be bugged into defense position, or have the sprite *still there* when you’re supposed to be a flower. - Buildcrafting is made extra tough due to the numbers that each item’s stat bonuses and debuffs not being readily accessible—sure, green and red numbers HELP, but couldn’t you have just made a +2 or -1? - Very nitpicky here. Sometimes—not sure if it’s supposed to be stylistic—the lines aren’t colored in completely on a sprite, or the colors bleed. - Lastly, the shopkeeper exit dialogue is annoyingly unable to be skipped, as opposed to every other line they have. I’ve many a time accidentally opened up the shop again on accident. I think it’s important to note I’ve not finished the game yet, and I think there’s still many, *MANY* positives that this game has… but I’d probably be lying if I said the gameplay wasn’t rough.
"Terrain of Magical Expertise" is truly mediocrity intensified and weaponised. I've never seen such mediocre crap in over 10,000 reviews for the worst of the worst here on Steam. I think this is based on some Flash web series or something? That nobody ever heard of because it's garbage, so the solution is apparently to try pollute Steam with it? The publisher is a mainland China owned business, so that may explain some of the poor quality here. Well, the voice acting isn't bad but I feel bad for the voice actors because if anyone ever found out they were involved in this, that's the end of their careers. The game itself is really something... awful. It's got that godawful meta "Oh this is a game about a game therefore I'm an excellent writer here's all my fanfiction characters" vibe to it. The cringe on this one goes to 11. Most of the furry orientated "gameplay" is largely unskippable visual novel/e-book trash, but it's interspersed with some truly badly done minigames like a mini-tactical turn based strategy section. Suffice it to say there's no actual deep or interesting gameplay here, and nothing of merit or value as a real, serious PC game. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The artwork here is terrible, it's a hodge-podge of amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game. PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this game was never accepted on the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2023 (and this was released not so far back in 2021), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Now, here's the real whammy here... the price for this garbage. If this was priced at 50c I'd be pretty offended, because it's not worth that much. "Terrain of Magical Expertise" has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. That's right, the developer thinks this game is better than Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and the entire Mass Effect Trilogy pack, and has thus priced their game accordingly higher. You can't make this stuff up... what a joke! This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This game also features a number of suspicious, likely fake positive reviews. The reviews all appear at almost exactly the same time, within 24 hours of the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and all have very similar wording and writing style. Amusingly, the number of suspicious reviews is incredibly similar to the peak player count for the game, yet the game only has 1-2 people launching it every week or so, then quickly deleting it when they see how incredibly bad it is. This review count, then, is highly unusual given the very low quality of the game and poor player counts. The "Positive" review score on this game should be taken with a large grain of salt. This might be done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product.
Ambitious game. Sadly, the game has very nice presentation, but the gameplay is so dauntingly boring that I can't really recommend the game to anybody except mega-fans of TOME web cartoon. + Fully voice-acted, which is impressive + Good OST + Throw-backs to the web series + Entertaining cast + Every "player" you fight against has a unique sprite and voice line, which is cool to see (Kickstarter backers, if I am not mistaken?) * Not original story of TOME but rather a multiverse take on it, mostly same characters, but they are slightly different, in a different setting - Bugs, I fell off the map once, forcing a save load and once got stuck in dialogue forever, not to mention other minor visual glitches and the like - Poorly balanced, game is mostly easy, but every now and then spikes a lot, with a regular guy suddenly one-shotting a party member. In one specific fight early, you can get team wiped before you get a turn (which thankfully does not matter, whether you lose or win that one) - Three save slots, but only one you can save on for current playthrough. Considering the game has different endings, this means you'll have to likely replay the entire game to get them, which is pretty horrid design, not to mention possibility of missing something crucial - There are special collectibles to alter the ending slightly. While these are given hints to by an NPC (one time each time, can't repeat the dialogue for hints), the game does not have any sort of tracker for each area to see how many you have gotten. Hope you were paying very close attention which of the 26 you haven't gotten, or you'll be backtracking semi-blindly for a good while - Combat sucks. It lacks QoL, is too easy most of the time, has things like "X got +2 attack" pop up as a clunky text box every time somebody buffs or debuffs, often forces tedious fights that drag on without challenge, there's no point fighting anything but required enemies due to no EXP system... I could go on. You only play this game for presentation - Minigames are lame. They are very basic and you'll have to do them throughout the entire game - Certain side stuff suggests other story elements but unless I am mistaken they are not concluded in this game, which is a shame since I doubt a sequel is in the works - Side-content is mostly combat-oriented which sucks - Certain abilities are far better than others and the game only lets you learn one move out of many, every now and then, so you potentially have a more tedious time with combat if you picked poorly. For example, party heal chosen at the beginning of the game makes things a lot easier - A LOT of ambush enemies, in most cases you can flee the fight, but it's still tedious I only completed the game because I still like TOME's world and like seeing the cast through the game, but combat tried its' hardest to make me stop. Most people would likely prefer to watch a playthrough on Youtube, if even that.
the game is glitchy as all hell, for example in the middle of a fight if one of your partymembers or the enemys gets turned into a flower but the character model is still there that fight is as good as softlocked and you have to restart your game. Now that would not be a problem if there were auto saves but there aren't and crashs at every important boss fight/npc fight also, also the saves dont save sometimes during the boss fight of the 4th event one of my party members turned into a flower but the character model was still there and i had to reset knowing i had save before hand during the intermission when i loaded my save it had set me back multiple hours. I tried to uninstall and reinstall etc and nothing works i love the youtube show for T.O.M.E and i know how much work Christopher Noisi put into this but its not worth the headache but the actual game needs some extreme fixes.
This game is very much a story first and a game second. The combat is a tad annoying; timing on the combo doesn't appear to match the animation, sometimes animations bug out (especial annoying since some animations help you know if an effect is up or not; seeing the animation for a regen effect and then notice regen isn't on is great) Abilities have little mini-actions to power them up, some of these just happen and unless you are ready for it you've messed it up. One ability involves clicking when two circles overlap; for me they never do, the animation actual disappears before they overlap and I need to know to click early. This game doesn't have a leveling system, its all about your 5 equipped coloured buffs, item use and abilities. Occasionally you get access to a dojo, in here you can do a 1v1 mini boss and your reward if you can pick from a list of abilities, you can only take one and this choice is locked in, each dojo has a different selection, this means it is possible to collect skills that aren't great for you or with mini-games that you dislike [Or are really slow]. At one point I lost a fight against an enemies with a lot more health then I'd expect; go through a few items but loss near the end when trying to greed the fight and finish it faster; only to learn that its okay to loss and the game carries on. All them items gone for no gain. Reloaded and purposely got myself killed ASAP and continued the game with all my items. The story is not my preference; I can see it being good for some people but its not for me and there is a lot of dialogue that I'm not invested in at all and you can't skip through it. Some parts you need to wait for long pointless animations before you can continue the dialog and you are unable to speed up actual cut-scenes at all. I'm going to try and finish this game but I really am not enjoying it much.

Temporarily bricked my PC twice, and froze four times. Jank as all hell. Would not recommend unless you’re a big fan of TOME already. And I mean a BIG fan.
As a longtime fan of TOME/TTA in all its forms, I'm pretty mixed about this game. This isn't the TOME I love; there's barely any character customization, none of the .hack-adjacent "game-affecting-the-real-world" plotlines, and at times it even makes fun of those previous shows. However, it's also got a lot of great writing, lovable characters, and some truly memorable moments of its own. I was also impressed by the fact that every single bit of dialogue, even from one-off background characters, is fully voiced. As a continuation of TOME's legacy, it's not my favorite. But as a story on its own, this game is great and absolutely worth playing. On the gameplay side of things, it's a fun little RPG with lots of Mario RPG influence and some good gameplay twists that manages to stay fun for the full duration. There are, unfortunately, a noticeable amount of game-breaking bugs that I ran into without especially going looking, which forced me to adopt certain builds (Flower immunity is a hard requirement because it can softlock any battle that inflicts it on you), but they're still possible to work around and didn't detract too much from my enjoyment of the experience. All in all, probably an 8.5/10 for me and worth a play as long as you don't go into it expecting it to be the same TOME you know and love. And if you don't have any experience with the past tellings of this story, don't sweat it! This game stands on its own; it's a reboot, not a sequel, and a fine starting point for the series if you ever decide to check out the rest.
🎮 Reseña de Terrain of Magical Expertise
