This game has a lot of novel and interesting ideas that come together in a very well thought out gameplay loop. The highly stylized visuals create a mysterious atmosphere that is strengthened by the sporadic lore snippets you find in item descriptions, and the exploration where you navigate with a map based on the shape of the terrain. When you get into combat, there are interesting terrain simulations such as plant growth, fire spread and water flow. The key to winning fights is managing the turn order by inflicting "unnerve" and "promote," changing the turn order of allies and enemies. Your party members level up different "breeds" (classes) and once you fulfill the level requirements, you can evolve them to another, stronger breed with different abilities, where they start at level 1. This system incentivizes exploration to unlock new breeds and ensures (1) that you get a constant stream of level ups and (2) your party composition and available abilities are constantly in flux. I haven't beaten it yet, but so far: Brilliant game, highly recommended!
Meh...
Got this in a bundle, bought here just to support the developers. Very cool and unique game. Art and ambiance are amazing, combat system is interesting with a ton of unique options, even some surprisingly thoughtful dialogue. Fair warning, the game is kinda obtuse. I didn't realize for awhile that you're supposed to go to the building on the west end of the map early, so I got sorta stuck and dropped off the game for awhile. Very glad I came back and finished it.
I really want to like this game but all the charm and intrigue gets sullied by constant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ - it's hard to navigate by a regular map but when there psychedelic ♥♥♥♥ all over the screen, visibility is zero since you in the forest, the enemy gropes are everywhere (and they are autoleweled too so ♥♥♥♥ YOU player that tried to level up yourself and find more buff trinkets). You thought that 200 hitpoint bog troll that that can potentially two-three-shoot even the toughest goblins was a menace? Well FU-U-U-U-UCK YOU-U-U-U-U PLAYER there now seven of them and there couple archers too. And wood withes that heal them all. At some point autoleweling made that i can't reliably two shot wood withes, so it got into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MMO-style ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ where everyone endlessly beats the ewerliwing crap out of each other while healers top everyone up. Oh, and RNG can ♥♥♥♥ you up SO MUCH in SO MANY different ways. I'm so tired, leaving this game for masochistic hikers. Oh and bugs - your squad can stuck on themselwes there regular phisics glithes like catapulting yourself and game stuters sometimes.
GOBLIN FANTASY TACTICS
Check out the full review on 2 Headed Hero! A vast and deep tactics RPG where you get to control a mess of adorable little goblins on a quest to defeat a vicious, demonic fog. Wholesome, psychedelic, expressive, and strange. Only a couple hundred reviews on Steam? This is the definition of hidden gem. Deep job systems, tough battles, exploration that rewards the player for paying attention, and a total lack of handholding without feeling unintuitive. It's brilliant. It's everything you could want out of a tactics game with a unique flavor all its own. HIGHLY recommended. https://youtu.be/dmOukInf_g4
This game has a lot of potential. It provides an interesting class dynamic and I personally felt a sense of reward and accomplishment when I finally oriented myself on the map. Travelling became less of a aimless gamble and more of a journey of choice. I enjoyed leveling my goblins and figuring out how to give them the greatest edge. Divebomb my lich with opportunist to shake up the backline or use my shaman as the tanky healer with wood witch spells for the range. With that being said, I think I echo a lot of what has been shared in other reviews, that progression is punished. I find myself in impossible encounters where I am "unnerved" to death regardless of my positioning and retrying just for the enemy to show some RNG mercy. It can be a frustrating experience and it loses the "tactics" aspect for me because the enemy can use its numbers to put me into a death spiral. I want to like this game for what it provides, but I just can't given it's current state.
Mario and rabids if you were a group of silly lil guys
Played the demo/prequel years back and liked it but never got around to playing. Decided to finally buy it to support the devs. The game is still good, probably won't update this to give more detail like some people do.
