A sleek roguelike deck builder in which you summon a magical realm tile by tile while channeling that ancient C64 energy.
Sometimes a game is just as simple as it says on the tin, yet still manages to be more than the sum of its parts. Taxing tiles is at first glance a slightly archaic tile placement game married to a rudimentary deckbuilder of the like that have blossomed in the wake of the genre's injection into the steam biosphere. However, when you scratch the surface you have a depth to it that is concealed in the game's internal progression system where different tasks unlock new existing tiles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3302044198 The general gameplay consists of playing a few cards, who sometimes summon tiles, reap revenue from the fledgling landscape, pick new cards between rounds and watch in utter horror as you near the end of the year and are nowhere near the king's demand. This soothing loop repeats over and over until you are either forced into exile due to tax evasion or run into the Endless Mode. There is something ghoulish about ending up in an endless loop in which you continuously rake in more cash to feed the ever greedy singularity dressed in the gowns of your monarch. But hey, this is simply a hidden homage to late stage capitalism at its finest.. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3302046322 Taxing Tiles is a small game with a big heart and is an excellent companion on a journey where you can just cozy up into a ball, listen to a book and just tax away your poor inhabitants with gleeful joy. I played this game on my Steam Deck as well and it ran smoothly with the touch screen working its magic. The price is just about right for the size of the game and I would recommend it to anyone into small but well constructed roguelikes. Now I just await the peasant revolt expansion.. I loved the card mechanics. The game is short, after a few hours you should be able to survive for 5 years trying to get the most from your cards/tiles (like in Luck be a landlord). This is the main goal but you can have fun trying to find all the cards/achievements. I ran out of ideas on how to get all of them, tried a lot of combinations but nothing. Just have 2/3 left tho. It's not expensive and can be fun for a few hours, it's strangely addicting. Maybe a a little polish (found a couple of typos and maybe 1 bug), the cards in your hand are a little clunky when you get familiar with the game and play fast. Overall not too bad if you like card games and tiles placing. I'm sure more cards and a bigger map in the future will do well in this game. I recommend it
This game is seriously addictive! Very re-playable as there are many different strategies to go for. My personal favourite is giant farm...until the bunnies take over. Go for organised order or absolute chaos, either way you'll have great fun with this little indie gem :)
another islanders-like. place various buildings, terrain modifiers and whatnot with cards to best suit your interests. this one is 2d, grid-based and pixely but same general idea. the king gave you some land and you have until the start of year 5 to settle your taxes and keep it. that's also when endless mode unlocks. there's limited energy per turn and taxes are due at the end of each year. gold comes in after every turn/month based on the current lay of the land. mouse wheel zooms, wheel click to pan. orange keywords on cards provide tooltips with an annoying and unnecessary animated delay, but additional info is only available in the card history screen in the top right. achievements unlock more cards, also for future runs, and unleash way too much confetti on the screen. they're like challenges but not much info on how to go about them and some are simply random. there's a half-assed guide somebody made, needs work. the undo button is not undo. just like right click, it simply drops the currently held card. minimalist pixely graphics, good enough, okay music, sfx is mostly beeping. the main menu is quiet and lacks settings. didn't expect that, as a save & exit option was patched in almost immediately after requesting it. once a game starts, settings become accessible in the corner. esc doesn't only bring up the menu but triggers windowed mode, very annoying. separate volumes (not saved between sessions), animation speed (always nice but here it's all the way to the left to speed things up, unlike any slider ever, and it doesn't get saved between sessions either), 'readable mode' for a non-pixely font (I had no problem with the default one), windowed mode and touch mode, plus an in-game achievements screen. there's also an embarrassing amount of typos, makes the whole thing look lazy as ♥♥♥♥. I don't like time limits in any form, not even sure if I was aware of it when I bought the game, but to me randomized luck-based games are mostly fluff to play between other titles, so it didn't bother me. the store page is definitely overselling it and it has absolutely nothing to do with slay the spire or luck be a landlord. there are cards and it's random, but stop misleading people by name-dropping unrelated popular ♥♥♥♥. not too expensive at 3 eur but it seriously lacks polish despite all the patching, so best wait for a big discount or more work to be done.
thank goodness i was browsing the most recent when i say this little gem really fun synergies and simple yet thoughful combos its nice
I found this game through a youtube thumbnail in my recommended... Didn't even need to watch the video to be interested Could definitely see myself spending countless hours in this :O
A neat way to kill a couple of hours. Piece together synergies to create a landscape. The text is a bit hard to read on the steamdeck though
Love this game so far. After 4 hours of playing, I finally unlocked the endless mode for the first time, and only unlocked half of the achievements? Wow, so many hidden secrets to be discovered! I remember there was a card that creates the tools, I unlocked it but haven't even tried it yet. Looks like unlocking the endless mode is just a beginning of the journey, just like Balatro. We need more guides on this game, especially achievement guides, anyone? 💗
Literally moving mountains and still can't pay my taxes
Stupid king taking all my money
