Tanks is a great game to play, features simple game play without having to over think and it currently contains a couple of fun gameplay modes with some great mini games and the ability to unlock further mini games depending on your level progression. It’s easy to control; WASD moves your tank and left mouse shoots and right click activates a limited number of smart bombs. Mini Tanks Arcade; This option is where the mini games are stored, features survival / speed jump and lots of other unlock modes, a lot of which I haven’t unlocked yet. Survival; This mode is basically free roam… you get to move 360 degrees around the map at your own leisure trying to avoid and destroy the opposition. Speed Jump; A fun vertical scrolling play mode that allows you to move horizontally and jump over obstacles (default key space to jump) and shoot the enemy whilst trying to avoid their fire. This mode is simple and effective and has a good level of addictiveness as you try to blast and beat your own score. It also features extra shield drops from the enemy to keep you going longer and also features a changing background that can confuse you when you least expect to happen, making the enemy’s bullets harder to see and just adding another element to think about. Adventure Mode; Cool little game puzzle mode, with the objective of killing the enemy on the screen and reaching the next level. You achieve this by disposing of the enemy and simply driving over the blue square. However, taking fire from the enemy will damage your tank which results in losing your cannon and then armour then death… Taking fire basically renders you useless because you won’t be able to return fire, so you then need to find and active the red square, which repairs and resets your ship. I found this gameplay had a fun element to it especially with the fact you can bounce your bullets off the walls with limited distance, but be careful, if your own bullets explode in front of you this will add damage to yourself… So you have to keep your wits about you. Final thoughts; When I first launched the game I didn’t realise I was still in a menu, but thought I was playing the first level, it was a little bit distracting but once I figured out what was what, I soon got into comfy position and starting killing. After which, I visited the menu section; this offers some nice control alterations / full screen / window selection and the ability to adjust the game window size. I was a little bit sad no resolution is available to change but it is what it is. Conclusion; it’s a fun little game and I hope multiplayer will added. I feel that would add a great element of fun to the game, not that the current mode is boring, it’s far from that, just a little extra would perk the game up a bit. It would also be nice if some of the menus were labelled / titled. Example, after selecting your game mode it would be nice if it just said “design your turret / body / design... as when I first started playing I assumed I was selecting what boss to fight and not designing my own look. I would also like to see some kind of leader board to the game, maybe a friends score / world leader board to add a level of “competiveness” I recommend this game and vote it 7/10 for gameplay. Graphics are O.K. and its very clean and easy to distinguish what is what but the menu system is a little confusing a first and this needs work.
