When i came across Tank universal 1 when i was only 12 years old or so back when it was a demo on Wild Tanget. my young mind was blown away as to how cool the game was, i never got to finish it back when i was little as i said it was a demo game. and since i had always had trouble convincing my parents about what games i wanted and the fact that they cost money always made them stingy at droping a few bucks for them. Now i am in my young adult hood in my early 20's and now that i have a little more financial freedom i bought both this game and its predicessor, and my eyes once again teamed with excitment when i saw these same old games i never got to finish on steam. and after buying both and finishing both i can summerize why i recommend this game. This game is a wonderful add on to the realm of tron like games taking aspects from earlier vector graphic games and putting them in 3D and making them just to put it simply, AWESOME. Everything from the dynamic characters to the combat, and to the general story itself. The second game complments the first game perfectly as according to in game lore the lands beyond the 1st logic gate are rather barren and are considered the badlands of the in game world where as the first game had mystery, Intrigue, and exploration the second has combat, strategy and above all the chaos of war. it sobers up the game from where it left off in the first as the situation is getting serious as the possibilities of losing grow ever more horrific as you march on through no mans land to stop a tyrant with unknown goals but with all tyrants we can only guess as to their intentions. Its a spiritual Successor of the old vector graphic games such as Battlezone and Tron, course brings out the best of both games and keeps to the legacy of both. Always after finishing the first i always immedently start playing this one to continue the story right where we left off like a 2 part novel. 9.2/10 Whilst containing older graphics, you wont be bored with it any time soon.
In short, the first game was deeper in story and lvl design, but still I love this type of work, hope to play the 3rd game soon.
A lot of changes since the original. I was hoping for a continuation of the original story, but I also respect the change to make a new version of the original story. I loved the original game and this game essentially takes the elements and design of the first game and ports it in. Still a very atmospheric game and I hope to beat it someday. EDIT: I have returned to the game and have now beaten it. It was an extremely addicting experience once you get into the flow. I really liked this game. The combat was engaging and fun. Although I do have my complaints: I believe the story from the original game was better, and should have been continued rather than rebooted here. Additionally the battles FEEL smaller, and the overall scope is toned down drastically. It feels as if you are simply performing small skirmishes without actually waging a war. And most of the time, on offensive missions, your allies just sit at base and don't actually help you. I'm sure I have a few other things but otherwise I really enjoyed this. Thank you for bringing the game to light.
I wanted to like this because I loved the crap out of the first one - but the new search and destroy mode is ass and it feels like every bullet sponge on the map has an aimbot making it impossible to charge a shot - and it has hit flinch which makes things even worse with every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unit having an aimbot. A miserable experience and extremely disappointing.
this is not necessarily a bad review but i also have some disappointments with it, for a start Tank Universal is an old ass game now i played it when i was a little kid years ago off WildTangent Games, this game i couldn't find for the longest time i came across finally and found out there was a sequel, i played the first one and beat it and immediately moved on to the sequel, the new systems looked good the updated visuals and frame rate was nice and the and coming from the first game i was actually interested in the story. however some problems i have with this game are nitpicks and not at all integral to the game itself, the game works and plays as far i can tell. as for my problems with it it mostly comes down to the first game, for a start the new systems are kinda a pain in the ass, it feels too simulator if thats the right word for it, the 1st game was Arcadey, every enemy has so much health and you knew exactly how many shots or what method to kill them, lights where fast but 1 hits kill and threatening in higher numbers, medium tanks where higher damage but 2 hit kill, evade their shots and hit them before they hit you, artillery was 1 hit kill but was far to the back near the enemies base, they could cause problems to network missions and were decently threatening watching as a volley of red missiles travel from the enemies wall right to your allies sitting and spinning because their AI broke, suicide where very fast and dangerous but a charged attack near them could kill them instantly an give tons of power shards, and heavy tanks where very dangerous but could be out manoeuvred while you charge up a shot to deal huge damage. In TU2 it feels like the only tanks that are still how they used to be are the light and suicide tanks, the medium tanks take so many hits to kill, especially on network missions if there are too many your better off just bailing on your own tank and finding a new one because they kill super fast but it takes 7 plus shots to kill 1 medium tank and they are the main tank the enemy deploys. along with that because they kill so fast your systems go down instantly especially if you have no armour active it feels unnecessarily difficult but maybe i just miss the arcade elements of the TU1 next complaint i have it the level design, ive been in the same field/canyon for 2 hours, its like the level design just vanished, all the unique locations and vast monolithic structures are gone, like the chasm with the sheep mini-game or the tower with the high council all these unique locations are non existent as far as ive played so far, its just valley with trees and walls on the outside of the map, and some distant towers, like i get we are leaving the area around Sector City but is there nothing out there besides a stone village in each level and some towers it just feels like this vast world doesn't really feel so vast now. with that my final gripe is actually dumb but i miss the old characters models, making them people and not the blue red and green dwellers of this cyber world just looks kinda weird to me, also i cant take Turx seriously when he looks like someones Uncle lol, its a dumb problem i have but it not the end of the world i think its weird though how all the people we meet in the game are all like alien looking cyber people but Turx and the one woman from the gorgonopolis cutscenes are human beings anyway like i said this isnt a negative review the games fun and if you like half simulated half Arcady tank games this and the first game are good fun, i just thing some changes from the first game are unnecessary and that TU2 is kinda barren compared to the first game, NOTE: i have 2 hours in this and haven't finished this game yet but as of where im up to which is maybe mission 9 this is the opinion i have of this game so far, Dev made a fun game and he did a good job on it but i prefer the first game
I would like to preface this review by stating that I am whole heartidly, undoubtidly, incredibly biased and that this is in no way an objective review. The game you see above you was made almost entirely by one man and his dedicated fanbase on a forum that now probobly dosen't even exist. Tank universal 1 was one of the first games I purchased on steam and remains one of my favorites, I don't think 2 has the better story, but 2 greatly expands on the game mechanics with bases and hub battles that are a blast to play. Quite frankly I love it.
made some great memories with tank universal when i was a young teen and i dreamed of the day this would come out. definitely met my expectations and more; love this game
I really liked this game. I enjoyed so much
Overall, it was enjoyable but a bit of a slog.
Pros
Thanks to new technologies and improved development capabilities, the tank's handling has seen a significant improvement compared to TU1. Now George can move more freely in and out of tanks and laser turrets, and also be able to drive light/heavy tanks. The plot design has seen greater progress compared to TU1.
Cons
Instructions still absent or unclear for the use of some certain features. The enemy medium tanks are much invulnerable than before, rendering levels featuring large numbers of enemy medium tanks considerably more challenging to overcome. In the level featuring enemy laser turrets and soldiers, once the tank is destroyed, it becomes virtually impossible to complete the level. The crosshairs for light and heavy tanks appear to be inaccurate. The absence of an expandable overworld map makes it rather difficult for players to gain a precise grasp of enemy positions within (especially) defense levels.
