This is a classic adventure game, that tries to mimic the ones from the 90s. It accomplishes that perfectly, pixel art is nice and low resolution and there's a lot of weird design choices. The plot and setting are very interesting, you are Alfred, a librarian who gets the job at a local library after the previous job holder dies. There's a warning letter about an evil but you read it after releasing it. Oblivion, the villain goes from book to book, destroying them from inside. You, as the master librarian, now have to enter a different set of books to find a way to entrap Oblivion again. Each book is basically a small contained world with its own set of characters and items. Expect variety like 80 days around the world, or a Gilgamesh book. They are colorful and interesting. The music, while not incredible, suits the game quite well. It reminded me a lot to those mellow songs from the Deponia series. The game is fully voiced, but the acting quality is regular at best. The main villain has so much filters and effects that sounds funny instead of menacing. The first hour or two are quite good, and that's the point where I think the game falls into bad design territory. The main mechanic of moving from book to book is too cumbersome. You get out of a story by ringing a bell and then you have to pixel hunt for the book you want to enter. Worse than that, you can actually move items, one at a time, via a magic bag. You have to move items between books a ton of times and there's no easy shortcut to do so. There's an early puzzle involving making a food recipe that requires tons of travels back and forth to bring all the necessary ingredients and kitchen tools. Even when you know which exact items you need, it takes a lot of time to do so. They should have learned from interfaces like Day of the Tentacle, where sending items was immediate. The other big problem is the minigames or puzzles. Some are just too hard, one in particular involves guessing a phrase in greek with almost no hints, and using a letter switcher interface that takes ages to move the letters around. They also included a tic-tac-toe minigame where you have to wait until the RNG decides to let you win. It's a shame really, because most of the inventory adventure puzzles were ok. Lastly, the game also has some typos. It's nothing serious, but it gives some amateur vibes. It was fun seeing that they even misspelt the protagonist name in the credits as "Afred" instead of Alfred. Tales is an adventure game that I can only recommend if you already run out of other less tedious adventures.
Ah, classic point-and-click. It’s like digital archaeology with sass. You click on things. You talk to people. You try combining weird objects like a glue stick and a banana peel hoping it’ll do something useful (it doesn’t). The puzzles range from "huh, neat!" to "wait… I was supposed to combine THAT with THAT!?" And just when you think you’ve outsmarted the game, it throws a logic puzzle at you written by a deranged crossword puzzle maker on espresso.
