1346 – 1356 A Pandemic reaches europe. The Black Death. Over 25 Million Human died. Hard Times – hard Decissions. What have you done to survive in such times? Welcome to TALES OF THE BLACK DEATH! In first look it seems to be a typical Visual Novel. It is not. It is more. It is a Journey into a dark Time where you not only have to read Text. You also have to care about yourself, you have to make hard Decissions …… you have to survive!!! You can be sure that each decision has consequences and you can also be sure that you will disbelief many of your decisions, wishing to have other choices. This Game will show you the constraints of your conscience. That is something i promise you. You are Baldasar, a young Boy living in Italy. Times are hard and food is rare.A mysterious illness overcomes the people around you and your Parents are infected, too. Starting at your Aunts House you begin your Journey. A tutorial Raven, very nice idea, shows you everything you need to know. There is also a Tutorial, i recommended starting first, in the Starting Screen. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634038476 You have a Health and a Morality Bar. If one of them reaches Zero, you loose. That depends on your decisions. There are also 3 Symbols that can also appear next to your Avatar. Sickness, injury and infection. Try to avoid them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634039141 Your journey goes through 3 Chapters in 3 Countrys. You will meet different People on your Way. Whatever happens don`t forget, your main Target is to survive. If you die you have the Choice of starting from the very beginning or to make a little step back to change done decisions before. The Graphics are wonderfull atmospheric and the drawn Style is perfect for this Times. I love that mix of comic and Bookstyle. Well done. That goes also for the Sounds and music. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2634038732 TALES OF THE BLACK DEATH is an exciting and dark survival Visual Novel. Dive into one of the darkest Times in Human History and try to survive. A very big thanks to the Developer for inviting me to this Journey. You did an awesome job with it. By the way all 3 Screenshots are from the Beginning of the Game, i don´t want to spoiler anything. The Achievements depends either on good and bad Decisions what makes this Game highly replayable.
«Tales of the Black Death»
If you like narrative games with difficult moral choices, then this is the right adventure for you. Tales of the Black Death follows the troubles of Baldasar, a young boy trying to escape the 1346 plague. His journey will take him from Italy to France, and finally to England. The story is very engaging and effective in delivering the collective and individual drama, helped by a very inspired art style and soundtrack. I couldn't stop playing and found myself torn in front of many troubling decisions, feeling the urgency and the tragedy, hope at times, and worry about the fate of the protagonist. After playing I kept thinking about morality, and how life threatening events could move the line between what is acceptable and what is not. Would I take the safest route to survive, looking away when others need my help? Or would I go out of my way and risk my life? What if it's not just my life but I have someone else depending on me? Would I cause pain (or worse) in order to save myself and my loved ones? And after that, what life would it be? Would the experience turn me into a monster, or would I be tormented forever by my actions? In a way this game is like a mirror that shows you different reflections, and make you wonder which one is your true self.
On the one hand I think it's certainly deserving of more than 6 reviews compared to some of the garbage that is popular. On the other, it just wasn't for me. Having the text move all around the screen like that is a drag having to track with your eyes one sentence at a time like that. I also think it's too focused on plot rather than characters/dialogue, from what little I played, which I admit is very little. The art is very nice, and the raven and the aunt were the right idea (raven is funny/engaging, aunt seems like a genuine character, little mystery there, wish I got to spend more time with her) but it kind of lost me as it went on with random encounters, seemed like a "and then this happened, and then this happened" way too early on and I got bored. If I had one bit of advice it would be this, if you make another one I'd focus on a much longer intro before things get going so we can get invested/set into the world. But that's for my personal taste. Some people might enjoy getting right into the action. Also the writing isn't obviously bad from the get go so that puts it above 95% of games. It just isn't stand out great enough to put up with the random deaths like a sir brante is. But it isn't bad at all.
8 out of 10 boils Tales of the Black Death is a choose your own path adventure VN with lots of choices to make, some trivial and some moral. But all having meaningful results. There are two modes: Historic and Story, with the historic mode being a hardcore mode and Story mode being more casual. Game play (and even the tutorial) drip with atmosphere. The writing is good quality as is the soundtrack which compliments the art style well. The UI is also clean and easy to navigate. Overall a very good VN.
I genuinely enjoyed my time with Tales of the Black Death, not only for its compelling story and fun gameplay but also for the real and raw choices that were presented to Baldasar throughout his journey and how it made him believably grow as a person. He goes from questioning whether or not he could kill a person to being presented with the option to do so several times over, and choices made either freely or under duress haunt him even years later. It feels very realistic to go from an otherwise average kid to someone who is up all night tormented by invasive thoughts of people who died either directly or indirectly from his actions. Above all else, Tales of the Black Death has piqued my curiosity on parallels between Baldasar’s pandemic and ours; I know I’ll be reading about the Black Death for days because of this game.
Dark, wonderful visual novel. The atmospheric artwork and music really transport you to this historical period, the story is engaging, and balancing morality with survival led to lots of interesting choices. I also loved that you get three different settings, each with different vibes and storylines (although how does this peasant kid who's probably never been to school learn languages so fast? Lol). Frequent decision points mean you're never reading endless lines of text without getting to do anything, one of my pet peeves in visual novels. This studio is located in Quebec, and a minor issue is that the devs didn't translate the QTE chase scenes into English. Only important thing to know is that you'll have different running speeds on different terrains; none of the other dialogue in those parts is essential. My only major gripe with this game is that the checkpoints are too far apart. Especially if you're playing on hard mode, it's easy to get stuck in death loops that will require you to start the entire chapter over, spending ages clicking through content you've already seen. There are so many ways to die in this game that this happened to me regularly even on easy mode, and getting thrown back so far really broke the immersion. However, this hiccup was totally worth it for the great storytelling, atmosphere, and choice-driven narrative.
i do not recommend this game to anyone, as after four hours of gameplay, it has become clear to me that the creator does not know anything about a good gameplay experience at all. you are forced to repeat entire sections of the game (the chase scenes are especially awful) and there is no fast forward button and it causes the game to bug out. this game is stupid. however, i will be playing the rest of it because the story is quite good, although unrealistic and outlandish, and i've become invested by means of sunk cost fallacy. i hope that you will save yourself this time and ten dollars.
