Taka Taka is a Japanese-folklore-inspired rhythm game. Play as Tengu and Oni, an unlikely pair attempting to survive a world of Yokai. Match the characters with their colorized notes and face increasingly more conniving enemies in order to progress through the world of Yokai.

Worth getting on sale if you only plan to play casually / drop it if it starts getting too hard.
Game is simple but deceptively challenging. Suggestion would be to have the level curve out a bit more gently, as just when you think "oh, this is not so bad" the game slaps you hard :P

Taka Taka is a great game! It has a fun concept, in terms of a rhythm game! Great music and an art style that gave me Okami vibes (it has that sort of brushed look to it.) Greatly enjoyed the time I spent playing it and do intend to play more. :) The devs are friendly folks, also!
I've been watching the development of this for a while it has come a long way so I'll give my honest thoughts - Game is worth playing for sound design alone, impact is super satisfying . "YEEEOOOOOOOO" - Music is insanely good - Levels are challenging but fair - Controls are intuitive - Graphics are great, all painterly and really match the vibe 10/10 would be transported to the Yokai realm and be forced to fight to the beat while on a conveyor belt again
A rhythm game with 4 lanes. You control a red and purple spirit and there are 5 zones with 3 levels each. After beating a zone, new yokai are added with a different ability. Each level, you start with 5 hp and can slowly gain it back by hitting combos. The player needs to focus on timing and hand eye coordination and you have about 2-3 seconds to react to the incoming yokai chain.
Pros:
- The controls are simple, but this game is hard to master. - Art is hand drawn and the nature background of each level is gorgeous. - As more yokai are unlocked, there are detailed lore descriptions of each. - Music is catchy for each level and the soundtrack is coming soon per Steam page.
Cons:
- Normal difficulty is still relatively hard even for many players. As of this review, only 15% beat all 5 zones on normal difficulty.
Suggestions:
- Give 1 extra life for normal difficulty only. If player dies, you come back with 1 HP. - Add a daily challenge level for more replay-ability. - Add controller support. - Add a replay feature. This will allow player to watch their mistakes from previous run. Conclusion: A challenging game with beautiful art and catchy music. If you want to meet the mystical yokai, try this rhythm game. This is a really deceptive game in the best way possible. I'm not really into rhythm games, but the presentation and game play is the most unique and approachable way of playing I've seen recently but even then it's still not as easy as it seems because it still has it's hard core difficulty that most rhythm games have but the difference here is that it's still achievable with a slightly more forgiving approach but for people who's already in the rhythm game space, this should be a nice mixup to the usual rhythm games out there. Would strongly recommend to people who are not into rhythm games to give this a shot and even more so for people who are into such games.
You think you have muscle memory for rhythm games? Well throw it out the window, cause none of my knowledge from the dozens of rhythm games I played so far has transferred to the controls of Taka Taka. Not because they're bad controls, but because they're just subtly different enough. In theory the patterns aren't extremely difficult, but in practice the need to re-learn how to play a game heavily slows down that process. In a good way, I can't remember last time I had to do this, so it's an oddly fresh experience that I definitely appreciate. That being said, the major downside of the game is its length. If you're not into trying to beat demon difficulty - and it's definitely hard enough to scare people away - then you can probably beat the game relatively quickly (~1.5h, many failures included). I would also like to see some indication of which levels were complete and with which rank on the level select, but that doesn't have significant impact on the gameplay itself
Honestly gotta first point out how fun the art style of this game is! Super unique! Also love the music of this too! Whether I beat the level or fail it over and over again I definitely enjoy the music. Will definitely be playing more of this!
"Yo dude you're restarting a lot, this song looks pretty challenging. How far are you into the game?" "LEVEL 3" Very unique art direction and a simple control scheme combine with a challenging gameplay loop into a well polished experience. At first it's going to feel like the rhythm game equivalent of 5D chess, but once your brain gets used to the timing and tracking both scrolls simultaneously and you start passing levels, you really feel a sense of skill and accomplishment.
