Could not figure out the controls. There only seems to be the Unity Engine start-box to define the controls, and there are some obvious omissions, like the T-key for taking over planets. No in-game help for finding out which buttons to use. I figured out how to take over a planet, but I never figured out the dog-fighting. Either the enemy would sneak up behind me, or it would easily pass-by me while I wobbled back and forth, in attempts to aim. I understand the game is Early Access, but there needs to be some way to bring new users up to a level of doing something, just so they can try it out. Right now, the game just drops you into the cockpit of a very wobbly spaceship.
As a non-VR title, this is super barebones and not something worth buying (yet?). SoS has the makings of a nice indie space shooter but there's just not enough here to make it a worthy buy. The visuals in SoS are really nice for an indie project, with the included photo mode you can stage some pretty neat non-combat shots of friend and enemy vessels. The soundtrack is amazing, I could see myself putting it on loop as it's equal parts relaxing yet heroic. Each faction has fairly unique ship designs, unusual in smaller scale games and the main thing which will keep you playing until you've flown them all. Unfortunately, what this non-VR release gets wrong is a bigger list. You cannot capture planets as there is no menu when clicking on them, rendering the core of the game unplayable. Keyboard controls are a mystery beyond W and S for thrust and T for marking other ships. Trying to take a screenshot breaks the entire game, usually causing you to float outside your ship (I believe this is the photo mode, although it comes across as a bug). Closing the game is impossible outside of using Task Manager to kill the process. Last but not least, there's honestly at most a half hour or maybe 40 minutes of content here tops, it really feels like an early build of an unfinished game rather than a full release. Should all the negatives change, and perhaps toss in a few "kill X enemies of each faction" achievements to give it a bit of longevity, I could see myself saying to buy Symphony of Stars. But as it is right now, don't go near this.
Warning: Dead PVP Game This game has no single player content, and no playable PvP servers. There is no functioning PvP population, it's a dead game, and cannot be played meaningfully in the way intended by the developers.
"Symphony of Stars" is an amateurish attempt to create a PvP centric space combat sim, very much stylised as a ripoff of Wing Commander, but unfortunately the quality of this game is exceedingly low, which undoubtedly contributed to the complete failure to attract players. Don't get me wrong, such a game can generate a huge amount of public interest, with games like Star Citizen attracting record levels of crowdfunding and millions of players before it's even completed the main development phase. But the developer here is not Chris Roberts. The focus of the game is pure PvP, there's no single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the game. The vast majority of PvP-only games fail because they don't "go viral", and without players, or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls and game handling are notably very clunky, sluggish and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state (because there's no players and no single player content). It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, or the population dies, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the utterly unrealistic price of $3 USD for a game they know is abandoned. Don't give it to them. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
It's bad, you can't even figure out the controls.
