Sybil is Haunted

Length 30min+ RPG Maker Visual Novel, where you explore Sybils’s Apartment, the main goal is finding all the endings. You are looking at 30 minutes if you are fast, but the endings took me a little while to work out while the mini games offered a bit of challenge. The game feels in the vein of Milk inside a Bag of Milk inside a Bag of Milk, with existential dread and neurotic nature of the character, with visuals in the same feeling. Honestly a good measure if you will like the game is you already enjoyed every one of the ‘Milk’ games. Sybil is Haunted really does well on player interaction as there are multiple items the player can interact with that allows for further horror moments, as well as character. While the player's capacity to further interact with the scenes does offer more interactions. There is always something happening and the player is always being haunted by another ghost that is approaching. There are two mini games that need to be completed to get the endings, they offer a bit of challenge but are not that difficult. Overall the game was a lot of fun, some great visuals, and a really interesting idea for getting a fair bit of playtime out of such a confined space. Endings felt different from each other, with the fifth ending really pulling the existential dread together, and the hauntings through the apartment really stand out. Very clearly inspired by the "Milk" series, interesting at least, some variation and gameplay and cute artstyle. It has a couple different endings and though it didn't give me a very original vibe as it does come off pretty similar to Milk Outside a Bag of Milk, it doesn't feel the same either. Overall pretty good experience for the price, I definitely look forward to seeing more of the developer and how they'll blossom into developing their own gamestyle/vibe.

RPG Maker strikes again! Sybil is Haunted is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially RPG Maker's top down element coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This RPG Maker kitbash is a runner up for one of the worst "games" on Steam, and that's a tremendous achievement. It's a short e-book with some very minor adventure game elements (yes, the developer could not work out how to make a JRPG with RPG Maker, the only thing RPG Maker can do, and it's terrible at it, so we got this dumpster fire instead). The plot of the book is an incredibly bad high school anime dlub drop-out fan-fiction about how angsty and edgy and gothy they are, combined with artwork direct from MS-Paint... yes, this is so bad they used their own art which is even worse quality than the usual flipped assets from RPG Maker. Every day we stray further from god. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $2 USD for this. The fact that anyone genuinely thought this would be worth money is both more amusing and more horrific than the content of the game itself. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.

I like this game. I only got ending 3 so far. Sybil is who I used to be. Now I am cured through education and working full time and vacations and socializing and parties and eating fun food. These are the things Sybil doesn't have. I was like her but I still did things by sticking to subjects in school I was good at and making practical choices in careers and education. I am going to work hard at my career and leave my comfort zone but I used to be Sybil. This horror game is amazing, the effects, the animations, the drawing, and the personality is so depressed college student but she dropped out which is not good. I know people like Sybil and I cured myself from being Sybil. Don't be Sybil and get an education and a career and work friends and take a vacation or two and have some healthy food. Also dressing up and wearing makeup will help. This game will haunt me for ever. Squishy, squishy! This game makes me feel so old and I was a college student a long, long time ago but I felt all the feels. This game takes you right back to early years in college or senior year of high school. It's fun and worth full price. 10/10!
