As much as I'd like to give this game positive feedback and share my love for the Swords and Sandals series, I can't bring myself to it and never ended up finishing the game. The way the game is made by itself is intriguing to my taste, so it's nothing about the gameplay that bothers me. You play as Spartacus, one of the leaders of the Roman slave rebellion and with fast-paced action and skill, you cut down your enemies, free other slaves and collect some treasures that you can use to upgrade Spartacus' properties. In that sense, the game really deserves a try. However, the problems ensue when the game itself starts to get to its buggy aspects... In most of the levels, there are spots which make you lag out and make it a little fidgety to get through and at worst scenarios you can get stuck inside walls and take a good few moments to try to get out... if you can, that is. You may even have to restart the level and try to recover your treasure while avoiding getting to the same trap again. Mind if I mention, if you die or restart again while your treasure is laying around, all of it is lost and you have to start over. Along with these bugs, it doesn't really help that in some levels the frame rate goes pretty low, even when in windowed and minimal graphics. For a game of this genre, it can be quite tedious to try to enjoy the level with these bugs in place and for that reason I have to give it a no. Otherwise, all-in-all a refreshing hack n' slash platformer game. If you're buying it, play it at your own risk... I'm glad I got this inside the Decalogue bundle and didn't really waste my money.
This has to be a resounding "NO" from me. It may have been made by a one-man development team... but it very much looks that way as well. The production values are clearly bottom of the barrel; the animations are truly cheap and amateurish; the programming is extremely basic and unpolished; the menus are dull and presented in the most boring font and within the most drab and uninspiring atmosphere ever; the screen moves far too fast and jerkily; the gameplay is no better than anything that came out in the 80s or 90s; the look feels like there is a constant hit to the frame rate, and it's an all-round chore and unpleasant experience to play. It's totally baffling to me as to why this has received any positive reviews at all. I've really tried to like the Swords and Sandals games but just haven't found a decent one yet and feel like I've wasted my money. I just can't help feeling I'm trying out a game made by someone who just bashes these out casually as a hobby done in his spare time - meant for family and friends only. It's pretty fun, but i found myself clipping into textures and falling through floors a lot.
this has got to be one of the buggiest games i've ever had the displeasure of attempting to play. yeah, thats right, I didn't even really get to play the game as you fall though the floor 85% of the time, and the other 15% feels like you are trying to speed run a sonic game... to top that off.. who the heck makes your main attack key E with WASD controls? yes you can rebind it, but I prefer to try playing with default controls.. the controls that devs typically believe is the best set for 70-80% of players, and the tutorials don't explain what keys to press, you have to look in the menu for them. what an absolute train wreck of a game.
A fun game. It's a roguelike set in the roman republic with Spartacus as your protagonist. Collect items and treasure and save your fellow slaves to get stronger in order to kill the bosses. A change from the original games but then again so was S&S IV and Crusader and I liked those. Warms my heart seeing I'm still playing a S&S game after all these years.
This is a massive leap from the normal Swords and Sandals franchise .. Fast paced, non stop action.. It's a massive nod to the good old days and while it utilises a lot of new effects we didn't have back then, its doesn't go overboard to dazzle you with lights to keep you distracted from poor gameplay like some games tend to do these days. Instead.. you are right in the thick of it. Spartacus is like Prince of Persia had threesome with Rastan and Ghosts and goblins... it's just Win all round. Amazing work put into it.. only 2 hours in and I haven't event gotten that far so I can see a lot of playability in this already
Not Swords and Sandals, basically just put that name on it to grab people, other than that, it's really boring.
