Swords and Sandals Pirates
Pros ✔On each island there is a different adventure, literally. ✔The sound production is really incredible. ✔Customizable campaign by your choices. Cons ✘The combat is mostly based in percentages and aleatory. ✘The only boats you will find are from the other factions, there are no merchants or other independent groups. ✘There is almost no option to configure it graphically, we can only change the volume. ✘The game has not been updated for quite some time. ✘There is no tutorial.
GAMEPLAY
💪 The combat Personally I think that this is one of the most hateful points of the game, but this is only my opinion and it is due to the type of combat that the game possesses, i will explain my reasons. We will have two types of combat to highlight: ground combat and naval combat. Almost all combats are the same, except if you have a captain with special abilities. Now the part that I do not like, the mechanics of combat, the same is based on the vast majority of percentages and aleatory (The classic style of this saga), there is nothing that can be determined by your skills or techniques so it will happen in a lot of situations that you lose despite having everything won from the beginning. The only interesting thing that could stand out about the combat are the confrontations with the bosses. 📜 Story and lore There is no central story on which the game is based (Except the base that leaves all heroes free around the world to see who becomes the victorious in the war of the 4 oceans), this is left in your hands to try to make your own legend. There are several ''mini stories'' within each tribe or each island, plus that each character has a brief introduction when choosing them. 👨 The character and class The game has a total of 10 different factions/races, so there are 10 heroes representing each race which each have different powers/abilities, each group of these 10 have an initial history and own units. What if I'm not sure is if the units of each faction have different statistics between them. In the case of all units having the same statistics, we are talking about a totally equitable start for all players and that would only be a visual change between the races, adding to this that all players start with the same amount of resources regardless of the faction choice. 🎮 Controls, camera and dialogs The controls are simple to handle out of the game and we only have to use the mouse but in game the thing gets a bit complicated at the beginning, as we do not have a tutorial or the slightest idea of what we play but with the time and experience it ends up being something simple. The camera seems to me an intermediate point between something that is well done and something that is a disaster, for several details such as the fact that the movement of the boat is done with the same button with which we move the camera, as well as when we do double click with this button we point the camera on our boat, in addition to that we can't zoom in or out. The dialogues throughout the game are limited only to encounters with other civilizations or when contacting the tribes of the islands. 💣 Challenge or Difficulty The difficulty varies depending on the game mode we choose (Classic, Custom or Survival) and on which depend the number of events that happen in the game, the amount of features that will be on the map or also the duration of the game. But leaving aside these points, I would say that in general the game has a high difficulty compared to the average which would see it as both a negative point and a positive one but since we can modify this through other game modes I think there is no reason why add or subtract points.
TECHNICAL
💻 My setup and the performance Windows 7 x64 - Intel Core I5 2300 - 8GB RAM - GeForce GTX 1050. The performance of the game with my specifications is really good, there are no slashes of frames or anything like that but you also have to add that in the settings of the game you can only change the audio, we can't touch any of its graphics. 🎥 Graphics, Animations and Effects Talking about their graphics there is nothing else to add and that I suppose you will have seen, they are a minimalist and caricatural style in which they call attention to their colors but that i personally find a little different and fun. The animations and the effects are almost null, and the few that there are, are made in a very poor way but being so they do not collide with the graphics that the game has so it can be a point in favor, if you undestand what i'm saying. 🔊 Sound and atmosphere In my opinion, this is one of the best points of the game, talking about both, the music and the sounds, especially highlighting the voice of the presenter and the picturesque music of the time that brings you to the pirate ship where you drink and celebrate with your compatriots. 📺 Interface and HUD The HUD menus are generally a great work of elaboration but the in game interface I think is too big for my taste. There are several errors within these topics such as that the enemies that are not heroes don't have a visible life bar therefore we will not have the data of the amount of damage we did to them. If it were not for these negative points, i would say that the interface in general is very good but as we can see there are still several aspects to polish. 📡 The Artificial Intelligence There is not much interaction between artificial intelligence and the player but with that little we have, we can say that in combat it is really bad, seeming to let itself be won and doing silly moves, it also seems very little developed in the movements on the campaign map although it could clarify that in matters of organization and management of the factions is very well armed, even surpassing the player in certain occasions. 💥 Bugs and errors None to highlight, which seems totally normal for the type of game that it is. 💰 Price-content ratio I think that is a game that has enough content and replay value to be worth that amount of money, which I think is small compared to others in the market. So, what are you waiting for?
CONCLUSION
Swords and Sandals started being a saga of browser flash games until nowadays it became one of the most longed for, in addition to that does not stop surprising us and despite all the weaknesses that this game has, it is entertaining and you can spend great number of hours trying surpassing yourself. Very disappointing. The game appears to be great except for one thing. You get random events that happen which require you to get a certain number on a d20 roll, this requires you to click on the d20 when it is displaying a number. Great if you are well co-ordinated but for players who are getting older it is impossible, I don't recommend this game at all until this mechanic is changed. So much potential ruined by such a bad design decision. Edit: I have just received a comment from the developer of the game commenting on my review, he has indicated that he will be patching the game in a way that may address my concern. On the basis of this I am recommending the game as what I had experienced was really good up to the point of the dice rolling.
Its a fun game, but it has a LOT of bugs. Some of them are quite game breaking unfortunately :(
I've been waiting a spot of time for a Swords and Sandals game, and I finally got one yesterday! It's a fun little game with tons of charm and silliness. It's a melding of the everything Swords and Sandals has been thus far, with gladiator fights, a sort of board game/mario party concept, and a combat system very close to Swords and Sandals Crusader. It's a good time and an interesting game, so I would definitely buy it, or wait until the Christmas sale to buy it to see if the price drops. It's already fairly cheap, but who knows? One last thing: the game has some bugs here and there with navigating the UI, and it froze up one time while in a battle. Otherwise, it's playable. Thanks for the game, Oliver!
As a spiritual successor of S&S Crusader, this game is a great addition to the Swords And Sandals franchise. If you love choose your own adventures or fighting fantasy books which is my case, the different adventures in the islands are very immersive and interesting. Furthermore the battle on land and sieges are similar to Crusader but a bit more strategical. The sea battles and duels are nice additions too. The soundtrack is somptuous, you really feel the golden age of Piracy/mystical islands atmosphere. Overall this game is awesome if you like the universe of S&S.
I never skipped school, because at school I could play S&S __________________ Follow my Curator for more!
I love Swords and Sandals series, but this game is just unfair, not hard, unfair. The Worst game in Swords and Sandals history.
ingame paywalled content. everything, from ships to crew to islands cost too much gold. you can't earn enough unless you occupy lots of islands and 20 days in classic is too short to explore and conquer such a large map. maybe 50 days is enough, but i'd like an unlimited game to 100% the map. sucks that failing a siege maroons you permanently on the enemy's island without a crew. sometimes a new game begins softlocked on the map. dice rolls also seem rigged since i got 10+ rolls only three times
Basically Crusader Redux, but with exploration and a bit more stuff to do
I'm a certified pirate!
