Sweven
Sweven is what happens is when your animations are poor, your assets are buggy, and you don't even have enough budget to add colour to your game. Between a sheer lack of content, inconsistent controls and the occasional lack of proofreading, the only memorable aspect of Sweven is how all its jolly bugs manage to occupy a whole 3.7 GB of hard disk space.
I bought that game as soon as I saw it on the new release, because it kinda reminded me on Limbo. I instantly installed it and finished it already in about 30min. So it is a pretty short game, it had only a few level (seven if I recall correctly) and most of them are pretty straight forward rushing through them. There was only one level that took me a bit longer than just running through it. Also the level doesn't seem to have a real connection between them. The story ... well it wasn't really there; you start in a cage and end up back at your parents at the end of the game, but besides a few sentences here and there the game has no real story, besides getting back to your parents. Addionally the ambience wasn't that great, because you have a few sound effects here and there, but that's all as far as I remember, I don't even remember the game having any music. (maybe it had, but it didn't really take notice of it) So it was nowhere close to being something like Limbo. That takes me to the point that I can't recommend the game at all, it would have been better as a free game or a demo to a bigger game, but for the 1.99€, where I live, it is way too much to ask for such a short pretty boring game.
It was ok, but now feels kinda lacking. Still nice little story.
Sweven is beautiful atmospheric platformer. Game is a bit too short but art and atmosphere quality makes it unforgetable. The game is very simple and similar to Limbo.
PROS
Art. Sweven world is awesome. Graphics quality is nice and all locations feels different. It is one of most beautiful and atmospheric game I ever played. Soundtrack. Music in the game is very simple and nice. Sweven delivers peace and happiness to your world and music just intensifies that feeling. Phrases. Instead of full story you get background phrases telling you about game environment. Those phrases can be easily applied to our world and makes this game a bit emotional and thoughtful and those moments was the thing made this game really enjoyable. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=911246778
NEUTRAL
Controls. You need 3 buttons to play this game: forward, backwards and jump. Why in neutral section? sometimes it felt clunky. Level design. Some levels were poorly designed by either forcing you to wait for too long or important things happened offscreen without your knowledge. Other levels were really nice and beautiful.
CONS
Glitches and bugs. I found some glitches and sometimes jumping/walking on a tilted ground is really weird. This can be easily changed and fixed and I hope developer will do that. Too short. I finished game in about 40 minutes and I wasn't satisfied by that. I wanted more of this game and developers offered very short journey. I would like to see more levels added and more different puzzles implemented.
CONCLUSION
I do recommend this game for nice and calm evening. Since Sweven is very short it is one sit game. If you looking for the game to play over and over again this isn't the game you should play but if you want beautiful and inspiring journey take it and don't look back. Often, despite the frequency with which various games come across the ethereal wooden surface of my existential TICGN desktop, a title catches my notice while simply scrolling through games on steam. Sweven was one such game, a simple side scrolling 2-D platformer with "an emotional story and beautiful graphics" according to the product page description. The price of entry ($2.99) made it a virtual (no pun intended?) guarantee that I would buy this and try it out. So, how did it stack up? Let's find out.
Story
The story in Sweven was pretty basic. It centers on you, a bunny rabbit, who was caged but inexplicably set free trying to find your bunny family. Interspersed throughout is commentary on society and the idea that we are heading for a collapse and reversion to a more primitive state of being. This is actually the main premise of the game, although this is presented through the bunnies eyes as it travels throughout the land on its journey to reunite with its lost family. I felt the presentation, although spartan, was actually a bit cliche. That said, it was effective with probably less than two hundred words in conveying an idea that other writers would struggle with using thousands of words and full dialogue. However, I also didn't really feel the "emotional" part of the journey at all. More emphasis was placed on the decay of society than on the bunny and her attempt to find her family despite the gameplay being focused on her journey. However, they did end the story on a hopeful note, which was nice. While the spartan approach made it more accessible, the lack of any real emotional attachment has me giving the story a 6 out of 10 as a result.
Gameplay
Gameplay should be the most important aspect of Sweven. It is a platformer after all. Unfortunately, this was a mixed bag. The puzzles were very simple to figure out. They did have some nice variety however. Where the game really suffered though was from the actual design choices. You are guaranteed during your 30 minute or so journey to die at least as many times. Why? Because there is no warning when you set off traps. Therefore, you will be required to employ trial and error as a method of moving forward. Additionally, the controls fight you at times. This is made more compelling when faced with the fact that the controls are simply jump and move. Should be simple enough to avoid any real issues You are a bunny and yet inexplicably, your ability to hop about is diminished whenever you really need to do so. You can jump pretty high when you aren't in the middle of a platforming puzzle, but when you are, suddenly you can barely get off the ground. Between this fact and the cheap nature of the traps being set off with no warning, gameplay is definitely the weakest aspect of the game. While the puzzles can be creative, they mostly struggle against poor controls and zero warning. All that said, you will still have an easy time with the game. It should just simply not have included unnecessary struggle. As such, I give gameplay in Sweven a 5 out of 10.
Graphics
The graphics is Sweven are actually the games strongest aspect. This really is a beautiful game. Mostly the presentation is black, white, and grey. However, the occasional introduction of color, such as the red flowers (which also serve as checkpoints) and crystals really demonstrate an effective and refined use of contrast. Use of shading really sets off the work even more. The artwork is really top tier despite also being minimalist in nature. This is a great looking game. 8.5 out of 10
Audio
The audio in Sweven is pretty solid as well. The subtle soundtrack provides a nice backdrop to the gameplay and the actual sounds are clear and resonate perfectly with the setting. Beyond that, they aren't really notable, but then I think the choice was for audio to be an enhancement rather than a focus in the game. 8 out of 10
Verdict
Sweven is a game you won't regret trying and the price of entry is reasonable for what should be considered a more artistic endeavor. I didn't see any real reason for the subtle inclusion of social commentary and the actual platforming wasn't good, but despite its flaws, Sweven is a game worth checking out. Just know going in that it weighs in at about 30 minutes and has zero replay value. Really loved this small, short adventure. Minimalistic, but with awesome black and white graphics and a dreamy tale. And completely playable with a normal controller :) Really recommended!
The poor man's Limbo: I purchased this game as it reminded me of the aforementioned game. Limbo was a great and rather interesting platformer and Sweven looked like a game trying to imitate this experience. Instead, we get a really short game (completing all stages should take no longer than 30 minutes) and that's it. The rest of the playtime is only for idling in order to get all the trading cards it has to offer. While the game's black and white themed design is similar to that of Limbo it does not have the same atmosphere. This is not necessarily a problem as Limbo was quite sad and depressing; in Sweven our rabbit protagonist manages to get back to its family safe and sound. There isn't much information telling us why we go from the surface to the caves and what we're doing in the world of men (with all the shields and spears the time period is definitely not modern). In any case, this is a short and interesting platformer but I think you are better off with Limbo. Also, the game puts a lot of emphasis on its music which - it says - should be listened to by wearing a headset. This, similarly to the rest of the game, I found mediocre.
