I backed this on kickstarter, and it was a great decision. The game is absolutely adorable, the graphics and the soundtrack fitting the game incredibly well to create a chill vibe. The puzzles themselves are well thought trough, with there usually being several possible solutions to any given level. My favorite part is the custom map editor allowing you to mix and match all of the different game mechanics. The custom maps give this game great replayability. It's important to note that in the end this is a small indie game, so while it's cute and fun, don't expect a AAA experience.
Very calm and relaxing game. And fun if you like solving puzzles. I meant to check it out for a few minutes and got lost for nearly an hour.
Writing this review from the Future future xD Great game Mr. Baumi! The art style is on point and the ambiance is non other then perfect. Really looking forward to completing the game and unlock all of the achievements in the Future future. P.S. Please bring the * The Baumi from the Future future* back into the videos in the Future future
This game has so much charm to it. I played the demo when that first came out a while back and man, I actually got so lost in the ambiance and the really relaxed vibe to it. If you are a fan of relaxed puzzle games that will challenge your mind in new and creative ways this is the game. Everything about this game is just fun, the art style the music and the concept itself. I mean there haven't been that many games that have released that have actually been just as enjoyable as this one. If you are on the fence I don't think I could recommend a game more than this
Fun puzzles that are very unique and fun. The different worlds change the gameplay a lot letting the puzzles evolve a lot. The puzzles give a good challenge while never feeling too hard. Very cute and charming
Hello, it's a fun little puzzle game with a cozy athmosphere, the soundtrack is very relaxing and fits well. Would recommend to give it a try.
Sweet Dreams Alex is a wholesome puzzle game, where you have to make long enough labyrinths to keep Alex's Nightmares away until morning comes. The gameplay reminds me of a reversed role tower defense game, where you only use walls to buy some time, which doesn't sound that difficult at first but later level features fields, which the nightmares gets buffed and can go faster or teleports, which can make their route shorter if you don't pay attention. The game is not trying to be more action packed, it just offers a relaxed journey to uncover a kid's life. The game also has a level editior, which is pretty well made and can offer countless opportunites to make difficult enough levels for the player. I hope this game will get a Steam Workshop to share levels easier and build on its community. Overall, if you are looking for a calm, labyrinth building game then give this game a try. 14.8€ maybe it's a bit much for it, be sure to get it around 8 - 7 €.
I'm not much of a fan of sokoban, block-sliding puzzles, but Sweet Dreams Alex (SDA) is a different kind of block-based puzzle game. It's not one I see that often, so the idea appealed to me.
Gameplay
Many block-based puzzle games are centered around moving them in specific ways to trigger switches and have them end up on a particular tile. SDA's focus is about taking a mostly blank area, and building a blockade to prevent enemies from getting to Alex. You can't just build a solid wall around the kid though, as the nightmares have to be able to make their way over. It wouldn't be much of a puzzle otherwise. Instead, you want to create a meandering maze that wastes their time as much as possible. The solution isn't just a matter of zig-zagging back and forth, but if a straight line is the fastest route, then doubling back repeatedly would be the least efficient. As you open different styles of level, new mechanics are introduced. For instance, the second set of puzzles introduces streets. Using things like crosswalks and traffic lights, you have more options available to redirect their routes, and waste their time. A common example is to make them follow a path to a traffic light, which suddenly blocks off that entire section, so they have to double-back to the beginning, and take the longer route they tried avoiding in the first place. Sometimes, these complications make it more difficult to foresee the path they'll take, so you might have to engage in more trial and error to work out those matters. Despite altering the gameplay to an extent, it doesn't change the fundamental concept and approach. You're still trying to waste their time with inefficient routes, and that starts getting a bit stale after a while. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3261842620
Controls
Since this is a block-placing game, the ideal option for it is to just use a mouse. It could have worked with a controller too, but that wasn't a choice here. Knowing how it'd play, I wasn't bothered by this, especially because it handled perfectly fine. Even if you ever do make a mistake, it's really quick and easy to fix, so I'd say this has been designed well.
Story
Alex is a young kid who recently moved to a new residence. As she adapts to her new home and neighborhood, various events get written down in her parents' journal, recapping what happened. One of the early entries mentioned Alex having an ancient age instead of just being a kid, but I've no idea what the reason was for that anomaly. I'd be surprised if the tone of the game took that big of a diversion, but anything is possible with an indie developer. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3261842429
Visuals
I don't imagine I'm the only person who looked at this game, and expected it to be played entirely within the house. You can't let the monsters reach the sleeping person, and unconscious people tend to be indoors. Well, at least until they get older, and start drinking. Being more creative than that, later stages take an outside perspective, as you'll set up a neighborhood as a blockade. The backgrounds behind the puzzle pertain to the environment: the bedroom is filled with cardboard boxes, while the neighborhood has street signs. Also, despite worrying about nightmares, the scenes are colorful and look relaxing, with the terrors of the night being on the tame side. A simple downside is how sometimes, the environment gets in the way of setting up obstacles, making it a bit annoying to see where you're placing objects.
Sound Design
The background music sounds a bit like a lullaby, but the tempo is faster than a real one would be. Thank goodness, or I'd likely have fallen asleep while playing. When you're checking to see if your solution works, the sound of the clock is a bit annoying. Otherwise, there isn't some horrific sound effect when a bad dream reaches Alex, so it could be much worse. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3261842962
Pros
🌟 Even when I was getting stuck, I didn't find myself getting really frustrated or upset by the puzzles. 🌟 Aside from some unintended consequences from the visual design, this has a nice aesthetic.
Cons
❌ Puzzle difficulty can fluctuate quite a bit from one stage to the next. It wasn't uncommon for me to solve a puzzle with ample space between any of the nightmares reaching Alex, making my solution seem unnecessarily efficient. Alternatively, there were others that stumped me completely. ❌ Selecting a stage can be kind of difficult, simply because each one is represented by a small star. I get the concept, but it shouldn't impede your ability to pick a level.
Tips
🔍 Sometimes, I find it easier to work backwards. Starting from Alex to see where the route will finish, and how I can make my paths most obstructive. 🔍 When talking about a game centered around a child's dreams, choose your words carefully.
Final Thoughts
Having played through some of the different stages, I understand why there's mixed results from SDA. On the one hand, the reviews are very positive. However, few of the people playing the game are progressing into the last sets of puzzles. I think it's because they make it past the easiest stages, run into some difficulty not much later, and just walk away from the game. Although you don't need to finish every single puzzle from each section in order to progress, you can only play them in a linear order. If you get stuck, there's nothing you can do to overcome that hump and continue with the game. Since there's a video walkthrough available now, this isn't so much of a hindrance anymore. Regardless, if I have to start looking up guides, my interest in a puzzle game is starting to subside. Overall, I think this is a decent puzzle game, but I think there's a few flaws holding it back from being a classic. Relaxing, yet challenging puzzle game. Starts out very simple and gradually adds in more and more challenges your way. The atmosphere that the game is trying to get across, comes across perfectly. I find myself going: 'one more and then I'll do this, one more level and then I'll do that' and before I know it, I'm 30 mins beyond the hour that I set for myself when I'd stop. PROS: It ramps up its difficulty at the right pace The atmosphere is exactly what they were going for It's challenging enough that you find yourself scratching your head plenty of times, but not frustratingly so CONS (very nitpicky stuff tbh) It can be a bit challenging sometimes to navigate the main menu In the second world, you sometimes have difficulty seeing where you put the lines The music, as relaxing as it is, can get a bit repetitive Overall, I give this a 9/10. Definetely worth your time if you're into maze building, tower defense-esque games, but without the towers.
