"Super Symbol Boys" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This platformer has a weird backstory about people's faces being stolen, and your goal is to collect some stuff so people can get their faces back. Weird, and unfortunately the only interesting thing going for this rather unambitious and shallow platforming experience. Otherwise it's just your basic platformer jumping precision stuff. Don't fall in the pit full of spikes. The platforming genre is pretty much obsolete... just a tiny number of professionally developed platformers exist on PC and offer any real value or interest to gamers (Silksong, etc). This is nowhere near being as good as Hollow Knight or Silksong. Even without a price tag, it's easy to see why gamers ignored this in favor of modern, professionally developed 3D games. This is offering nothing new or interesting, so it's easy to see why this failed. The developers abandoned this 2 years and 2 months ago. It will never be completed. This unfinished game is just polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuinely, completely made games. The "game" here is of a pretty low technical standard. The implementation is basic minimum effort stuff, more like a weekend project rather than a serious, professionally made product... and it's bad even compared to most amateur made games. An experimental piece... and the experiment is "Can I spend $100 on Steam Direct and then call myself a game dev?" While that $100 spend on Steam Direct probably made the developers feel good about themselves, we have to ask why this kind of thing is good for gamers. It isn't. In terms of visuals, this features really godawful MS-Paint tier "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. The deplorably bad visuals here come across as an insult to gamers. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So this is "free", but it's abandoned. Worse, it was never intended to be free. The developer intended to charge for this if it ever left Early Access... but the developer just couldn't be bothered. Making this abandoned pollution that gamers need to filter through when searching for products made by more ethical developers who fulfill their promise to deliver on their Early Access commitment instead of breaking that promise. A peak of 4 concurrent players (according to SteamDB) for a "free" game is a disastrous public reception. Out of 130 million potential players here on Steam, almost nobody was interested. Even though this is "free". That level of rejection speaks a lot for the quality of the game. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time. There are over 140,000 games on Steam, not every one of them is a hidden gem. I'm here to help gamers find the ones that actually matter in that sea of Steam Direct self-published mess. If you don't agree with my findings in this review, you should definitely download it and play it to see for yourself. I'm happy to have helped you make an informed choice, regardless of the outcome. You deserve the best.
Великолепная игра. Очень интересный геймплей с реверсом. Если у вас есть время, то это того стоит ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ Ну и если у вас прямые руки то можете попробовать пройти за меньшее количество смертей чем я))
Difficult, but definitely wears some of its inspirations on its sleeve while doing its own takes on those inspirations. There's only one full world at the time of writing this, but it already has a promising start. I had said a fair few things while testing this, but I apparently forgot to unmute myself the entire time. Which is fine, I intended to mention them here too. Mechanically, the game's pretty sound. Things felt fair if slightly over-precise in a few areas, usually if the space between you and the hazard's meant to be really close. Jump height's currently set to one height, making things trickier overall, so a variable jump height would go a long way in making some of the trickier platforming/puzzles even more doable. Finally, and this more a personal thing, but it currently lacks controller support. There's ways around this, but if native support's able to be added, it'd be a good option to have. Apart from all of this, I had a good time checking it out and can't wait to see how the game develops!
