warning: dinosaur is equipped with major style points man was i shocked by this game. i must've bought it like a year or two ago and played the first couple levels and got bored. but after watching a video on the game i wanted to give it another chance. and slowly but surely the games charm really started to stick on me. i just didnt like the design of the game, especially how the controls are super loose (in a good way) with its more momentum based movement with level design thats super super tight requiring huge amounts of precision sometimes. but with how easy it was to try over and over again, plus with settings that let you choose the intensity (choosing modes that affect the timer or checkpoints) made this game super addicting to try over and over. for the week that i spent with this game, it quickly became something that i would sit down to, listening to some of my own music and endlessly trying a level. man the amount of content here is great too: secrets to look for, collectables, and even an extra game mode to try out after youve beaten the main story. but then again this game is super precise in its level design. for some (especially myself) these levels require perfect runs, which is not helped by the imprecise controls. plus im not sure that the style of this game is for everyone; it is an indie game after all and the cutesy design and cotton candy music with some minor visual bugs. good game. i really hope for the sequel they fix some of the issue because i really think they have something good going on here 3.5/5
This game is INCREDIBLE. Sami only has 3 moves, and controls like a marble, but mastering the movement rewards the player with so many fun skips, better ranks, and secret levels that make my entire nervous system tense up. If you ever wanted a combination of Monkey Ball and Mario for some reason, this is dat.
I was attempting to 100 percent this game and get all the best ranks on every level up until the late game auto-scrollers came in and crushed my will to even want to finish the game at all. It's a really amazing game, but when you have a game built around speed and momentum and start throwing in long sections of waiting it really kills the... well the momentum. Definitely worth playing, but there are a hand full of levels that I just wish weren't here, it's so close to being perfect for me. I ended up quitting at the ice level filled with wind gusts every 5 seconds, I didn't like wind in Ninja Gaiden 2 back in the 90s, and I still don't like it in the modern day.
there was a couple stinker levels but overall I had fun
No health just means you die, but slowly. Most awful game I played in my life. Nothing feels precise, great for speedrunners, extremely hard for everyone else. Sometimes after landing you can not jump and die. Everytime you respawn there is a cutscene, as if game was not ♥♥♥♥♥♥ enough. Game does not allow to turn off timer in second part of game. no checkpoints either. Avoid this, unless you are a speedrunner or die hard platformer fan. Only 3.8% and 5% of players finished this game.
Has potential but has so much jank towards the end it feels like the dev just never play tested it aside from himself.
Great game. I loved The Gauntlet, left me wishing for a level creator for even greater challenges. This game is a great 3D plataformer for its movement that combines precise movement and physics. I love the simplicity of the core mechanics that are enough to carry a complete game
Super Sami Roll, developed and published by Sonzai Games, is a vibrant 3D platformer that draws inspiration from classics like Super Mario 3D World and Chameleon Twist. Released on July 21, 2021, the game introduces players to Sami, a charismatic chameleon on a mission to rescue his friend Vera from the clutches of the villainous Albert VII. Set against a backdrop of colorful environments, players embark on a journey filled with rolling physics, hidden secrets, and challenging platforming sequences. The gameplay mechanics center around Sami's ability to roll, jump, and utilize his tongue to grapple onto ledges, creating a dynamic movement system that encourages exploration and precision. Each level is meticulously designed, offering a blend of traditional platforming elements and innovative mechanics that keep the gameplay fresh and engaging. The inclusion of collectible raspberries and unlockable secrets adds depth to the experience, rewarding players for their curiosity and skillful play. Visually, Super Sami Roll boasts a charming art style that combines hand-crafted pixel art with modern 3D graphics. The environments are diverse, ranging from lush green fields to arid deserts and icy landscapes, each meticulously crafted to provide a unique aesthetic experience. The character design is equally appealing, with Sami's expressive animations bringing the character to life and adding personality to the adventure. The soundtrack complements the game's tone, featuring upbeat and catchy tunes that enhance the overall atmosphere. The music adapts to the different environments, immersing players further into the world of Super Sami Roll. Sound effects are crisp and responsive, providing satisfying feedback during gameplay and contributing to the game's polished presentation. One of the standout features of Super Sami Roll is its accessibility and replayability. The game offers a "Relaxed" difficulty mode, introduced post-launch, which removes time constraints on levels, allowing players to enjoy the experience at their own pace. Additionally, the multiplayer mode, unlocked through in-game progression, provides a fun and competitive aspect, reminiscent of classic party games, where players race through obstacle courses to reach the finish line first. However, the game is not without its challenges. Some players have reported issues with camera controls and occasional awkwardness in movement mechanics, which can impact the overall experience. Despite these minor drawbacks, the core gameplay remains enjoyable and rewarding, with the game's charm and creativity shining through. In conclusion, Super Sami Roll is a delightful 3D platformer that successfully combines nostalgic elements with fresh ideas. Its engaging gameplay, charming visuals, and accessible design make it a standout title in the indie game scene. Whether you're a fan of classic platformers or new to the genre, Super Sami Roll offers an entertaining and memorable adventure that is well worth experiencing. Rating: 8/10
Fun high skill level platformer. It is set up like Super Meat Boy with small levels generally in the range of 45 to 120 seconds for a successful run. The longer levels have checkpoints like Super Mario World and the new Super Mario Bros. games. I've seen people compare it to Monkey Ball, which is weird because the game has a marble ball mode which shows how the normal physics aren't like Monkey Ball at all. When Sammy gets momentum he turns into a wheel and you are a wheel with the physics of a wheel, not a ball. He can jump, ground pound for extra height, and use his tongue to attach to objects and bring himself to them which is used more and more as the game goes on. The biggest problem with the game are random difficulty spikes from levels. I think the devs are well aware of this because almost every instance in the game has the world path split at the hardest levels so that you can do one or the other. I've seen comments about inconsistent mechanics, but I think people are misunderstanding the mechanics. When Sammy lands from a big height there is a small hop afterwards during what he's incapable of bouncing again. The game has extreme amounts of air control so you are able to control your momentum enough to control this hop but it does take some practice. The other thing people say is that the tongue is not consistent, but it is very consistent, it only has some strange behavior. If you were not in range of an object when you press the tongue button it will not connect even if your momentum brings you into range during the animation and you even see the tongue connect with the object. I do think this is janky and should be fixed, but it is a very consistent and the game does give you indicator when you are in range of an object so it's not even close to game breaking. The other thing about the tongue is it only goes straight in a horizontal plane. It will not slightly go up or down for you if you are a little bit above or below an object. This one is kind of annoying but is much easier to get used to. Overall it is a great game. It is a precision platformer regardless of its cutesy looks so know what you're getting into before you buy as that seems to be the biggest disconnect from people who don't recommend the game.
