A very cute, simple game with cool mechanics that pull from 2D platformer classics with a few cool new original ideas. A great lil pickup.
Alright, so having just finished the main game, I absolutely recommend this. I took 25 hours (fifteen here, and another ten in the demo) to get a completion rating of 77. So first off, I'll say that yes, this game is absolutely rich with content. The 77% rating feels wrong considering how many things I knowingly left behind to do other levels and still need to go back and get, and I absolutely plan on putting more hours into this in the future to find all the bonus things, like the remaining 21 achievements out of 32, the seven or so bonus levels, and the last 40% of items in the shop. As for the experience of playing the game, it's fantastic. This is legitimately one of the best puzzle games I've ever played, wrapped up with fantastic aesthetics and an immense amount of effort and passion put into it that is very easy to see. The core of the game being using all the power-ups in tandem to mix and match effects leads to a bunch of experimentation and a bunch of "OOOH, that's how I do that!" moments that make you feel very smart, right before stumping you with the next section. It's rare to play a game that makes me feel so smart and so dumb in a cycle over the course of a few minutes pretty much throughout the entire game, but Super Puzzled Cat is really good at pulling you around and making you get into a mindset. Very few levels are 'given' to you. You REALLY just need to try and use your limited tools in every way you can think of to find your way around, through, above, or beneath obstacles and put your brain to use. The savestate mechanic is fantastic for this, as it lets you try new things or save before tricky jumps, ensuring that you never lose much if you want to test something out, putting you back a few seconds with all your items intact. I'll also say that the jumping around is fun on its own. You have an incredibly simple moveset without powerups, quite literally only being able to walk to the left or right and jump. No double jumps, no ground slam (without a powerup), and no wall running or jumping (also without a powerup.) It's very restrictive, but works well with the powerups and gives you enough leeway to make your way around the levels. The visuals and music are also great. The levels aren't detailed, mostly being floating blocks in a void and everything else needed for the level, and nothing more. This is fine. In fact, I prefer it to fully detailed levels since it makes it easier to focus on the elements of the puzzle. But the art, GOD the art. I love this game's art. The amount of drawings and random silly things you can find in this is fantastic. It's all so full of life in a way that is really fun to observe and I haven't seen many games get onto a similar level of. It's a very funny game, and the cutesy visuals alongside the humor make it really hard to get frustrated. even when you're stuck. The music is also fantastic, albeit maybe a little too fast paced for some levels where you might be stuck for a while, but still great nonetheless. I've loved every song I heard, and the music is incredibly fitting to the game in terms of its sound, being equally whimsical to the game itself. All in all, please, PLEASE play this game. This is a legitimate masterwork and if you love puzzle platformers you owe it to yourself to play this. It has some of the coolest mechanics I've seen in the genre, layers and layers of secrets and elements to add replay value, a fantastic soundtrack to boot, and it's, you know, fun. It can be occasionally frustrating and obtuse at times, but at its core it feels too well thought out, elaborate, and intricately created to ever make you feel like it's a design issue. Alternatively, if you like this game, I'd highly recommend Bat to the Heavens, another similarly challenging and whimsical puzzle platformer with secrets galore and interesting mechanics that I played back in 2024, which singlehandedly gave me the itch after completion that this game finally managed to scratch much later.
