Overview
Take Aero Fighters gameplay, replace the jet with a penguin, put in an upgrades store between rounds, and throw in a wacky backstory, and you have Super Psy Penguin. Remember the Deep Space Waifu series? Instead, the bullet hell that is Super Psy Penguin involves saving Neo-London from an assault by... Evil wanage (sic) hentai demon aliens! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2216122400 Everyone give ReviewExperts founder Dan The Man a big round of applause for personally seeking ol' Il Pallino's opinion of Super Psy Penguin. This is the third time Dan The Man has asked ol' Il Pallino to review a specific game, and has been perfect ever since! Keep that streak going!
Graphics and Sound
The graphics are all on par with arcade graphics of the early-to-mid-1990's which call to mind their favorite bullet hell flying games the player may have played if they really are that old! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2216191430 The sounds are also on par with games of the aforementioned era of graphics and the soundtrack is not only great, but every one of the five background songs all work perfectly despite being from different genres of music. There's nothing out of place about the sounds, but it is annoying that explosions are considerably louder than the rest of the audio effects, and is one step away from being Autobahn Police Simulator 2 in terms of imbalanced sound.
Positives
It's impossible to say what's addictive about Super Psy Penguin, but while ol' Il Pallino is destened to one day be tossed into the pits of either the Fun Hell or the Kinky Hell, if the Bullet Hell is anything like this game, that wouldn't be a bad third choice. (Ol' Il Pallino better pay his $30 to the Church of the SubGenius just in case the first three hells won't take him, and should happen to end up in an ordinary hell or a boring hell!) No bullet hell game had a funnier backstory, and if the reader disagrees, well... You're going to be cannonfodder in Bullet Hell!
Negatives
It is annoying that Super Psy Penguin is less than helpful about what most of the power-ups do in the between-round stores, and only found out through trial and error on the third playthrough what the magnet that costs $50 does. No pausing and no ability to save games... There's no need for the developers to make the game *THIS* retro! Given the nature of the game, it's kinda strange how none of the enemies encountered sprout tentacles and try to, ahem! Put the player on the receiving end of non-consensual sex acts. (Though this isn't *THAT* kinda game!)
Conclusion
Don't worry otakus and weebs, despite the backstory to Super Psy Penguin, the game is fun for the whole family, and even if your motto is Hentai or DIE!! (Ol' Il Pallino plays without taking anything personally.) Fighting evil wanage (sic) hentai demon aliens? This may go down as the favorite bullet hell of ol' Il Pallino's favorite New Zealander! I want to thank the developer for offering me a free evaluation key that made this review possible. Solid controls and a visually impressive retro arcade shooter that neither really impresses me 'nor is it a bad game either. It's just another decent retro arcade shooter, but it does deliver fun and an okay value for the money. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgzNtNLzy6k&t=16s I like the music and selection of power-ups that you can use your collected gold nuggets on. I also like the variety of levels, enemies and sound effects. Overall, this is a solid retro action arcade shooter. I gave this game a 7 out of 10. Recommended if you like this type of game, otherwise I'd probably wait for a sale or pass it up for the type of game you prefer instead. 70% score. Tarnished by a few bugs but otherwise a solid enough game.
Solid vertical shmup with a very British sense of humour Selectable soundtracks and a shooting penguin What more do you need in life?
A space penguin that shoots and blows up aliens and demons, whats not to love? Awesome character and level design and creepy atmosphere. Support this awesome indie developer!
A game involving a genetically enhanced cyborg penguin who uses ocean-related power-ups to help fight waves of invading aliens is a suitably bonkers theme for this retro-inspired shoot em up that proves to be a lot of fun. Sound is particularly good with some suitably creepy demonic effects and great music (including a choice of soundtracks). The action is decent-paced and fun, It offers a reasonable challenge for the average gamer and (most crucially of all) is good enjoyable to play. It's really captured that critical "just one more go" addictiveness. I genuinely kept thinking "i'll just have one more go, then I'll write that review"... and kept saying that until over an hour of "just one more go's" had passed! Gameplay mostly feels well-balanced and fair - if you die, it's (usually) your fault. It's well-paced, with nicely developed levels that gradually get trickier. It's not the hardest of games - a single afternoon's play saw me (hardly the most accomplished of gamers) beat it, but beating it twice unlocks Boss Rush and Survival mode and these (plus the challenge of beating your high score) will certainly keep me coming back to it when I fancy a quick blast. The biggest issue with Super Psy Penguin lies with the graphics. Whilst they are imaginative and reasonably varied, the colouring is quite dull. They don't really stand out against the backgrounds (particularly some of the moving backgrounds like Level 1's clouds) and this can make them very hard to see - something that can prove fatal in a game like this. Bottom line: Super Psy Penguin is a decent and fun retro-themed shooter. It's not going to trouble the acknowledged champs of the genre, but it's a long, long way from being the worst example of its kind and offers plenty of scope for enjoyment. It's probably going to struggle to attract attention in a crowded indie market, but at £3.99, it offers fair value for money, and a decent blast. If you do pick it up, you won't regret it. I certainly don't.
Super Psy Penguin

Gameplay
Super Psy Penguin is a retro themed shoot em up which puts in the fins(?) of a cybernatically enhanced penguin who has to save the world, because of course. The story is pretty barebones and strung together with some campy but fun dialogues but let’s be honest, no one will go into this game looking for a story. The queen tells you a couple things and drops you right into the thick of the battle. The gameplay loop is very simple, you move around and shoot enemies, similar to old school shoot em ups. The enemies come from all sides of your screen and if not killed, leave at the botttom. At any moment in the game, the screen is never not filled with enemies and the game gives little room to breathe once enemies pile up their bullets and themselves. The enemies you kill drop coins and after every few waves a boss enemy will pop up. The gameplay is easy to understand and despite the number of enemies you never feel overwhelmed. Super Psy Penguin is also a game that is custom built to be played with a controller and my first decision to have a go at it with a keyboard was disastrous. Overall, the gameplay of Super Psy Penguin is exactly what you would expect it to be and there are very few bugs. Perfect to be played in short bursts, this is a good homage to its inspirations
Visuals
While the enemy designs are varied and the game is not too hard on eyes, Super Psy Penguin is a little dry on background visuals which looks like a mishmash of grey goop most of the time. Other than that, it looks good enough to be enjoyable.
Sound
The sound design of Super Psy Penguin is very good. There are a few soundtrack options available from which you can select to play while you clear out the stages. All of these soundtracks bring something new to the table and makes each run a varied experience. Other than that, the other sound effects are generic but do their job and compliment the game well enough.
Overall
Super Psy Penguin is an enjoyable shoot em up that pays homage to what came before very well. It is cheap and very good value for money if you wanna pick up a a controller and destroy some enemies. Nice little shootemup - great music and graphics. Reminds of monty-python in its humour - very British! Runs well on my system - i7 + gtx1050ti Very fun - not the best shootemup ever - but good value for money at this price.
GOod evening, almighty game gods above. I have completely demolished your video game. I have played the entirety of this game in under an hour, and I could not explain to you how many shots of alcoloholic beverage I wish to consume now. I loved zero seconds of it, but I was so damned enthralled and apaulled by ungulating titties and demon worms that I continues to push through with my friends. Please save me, I think I need an enema and a colon cleansing to get the worm lords out of my system. Please make a 2nd edition and make it harder. 10/10 would let the angel suck my ()w89U$*-#(
